Thursday 31st May

Today we were going to San Diego Zoo but first things first, breakfast, which was included in our stay. It was a pretty good spread, eggs, toast, pastries, cereals, fruit juices, hot drinks, bagals, and muffins. The doors to the dining room/lounge were wide open to the tables by the pool and sparrows were flying in and eating the crumbs, they would come very close to you. We drove to the zoo arriving about 10am and there were hundreds of kids outside on school field trips but once inside it was fine as the zoo is huge so plenty of space for everyone to spread out. We decided to ride the sky-safari over to the other side of the park which obviously a lot of other people had decided to do as well as we had to queue for a while but we used the time to plan our route around the zoo.

The zoo is massive with both large new crowd drawing exhibits and smaller older ones over a very hilly area of Balboa Park. We spent the whole day here and saw nearly everything. I'll give you the highlights. First up we saw the elephants who have a lovely big area and are always entertaining and i'm sure these were smiling, especially the one getting a pedicure, they get 2 of these a week! Near them were some condors, their wing spread is huge. We saw some cute koala bears who were in a temporary home as they are getting a huge new area built for them and some other animals. We saw some big cats but I felt their enclosures were a bit small and then a very loud toucan.

For lunch I got orange chicken and it was quite a big portion, and Mike got a teriyaki chicken burger with bacon and pineapple, seemed an odd combo to me but Mike said it worked. We then used one of 2 travelators they have to get back up one of the hills.

Next up were the polar bears and they were my favourite of the day. There were 3, 1 male and 2 females, and they were having a great time, playing with their toys and play fighting with each other, I could have watched them for ages.

We saw some more regular zoo animals and then it was panda time, they had 2 of their 3 pandas out today the dad and his son, mum wasn't on show as they were hoping she might be pregnant. Both boys were sleeping though. We then saw some other bears but they were also not doing much so weren't as good as the ones we saw in Vancouver or as close.

Next up we got on the double decker bus guided zoo tour. It was much hotter today than we were expecting so could have done with the shade downstairs but opted for the better view upstairs. The guy loading the bus said each side gets equal animal views but that wasn't true, the right side definately had the most animals and we were on the left but that side was the polar bear side so i was pleased to see them again and some very interesting giraffes.

The tour was about 40 minutes long and was nice to have a bit of a sit down, they also have a hop on hop off bus that circles the park. Next up were the orangutans who I always love and these ones were posing for photos, then gorillas who I also like and this set were running about for a bit.

Next up was Mike's favourite of the day, a pygmy hippo, they are solitary animals so he was on his own, but I guess his keepers thought he needed entertaining as in with him was a monkey, they seemed to get along well.

We also saw a regular hippo, a mum and baby, the mother kept trying to nudge the baby into the water but he wasn't having any of it. We walked through the avairy and reptile house and finally left for the day and drove back to Coronado. We drove around the "Island" a bit, its lovely with beautiful houses and a huge navel base then parked on the coast road and walked along the beach which is very wide with soft sand. We spotted a bird dive twice for fish and saw 3 whale blows in the distance. We headed back to our hotel to wash our feet and freshen up, realising we were both a bit sun burned.

Tonight we went to Village Pizza to eat, I had spaghetti and meatballs with garlic twists which was huge, half would have been enough, and Mike got The Works pizza without olives and had some meatball garlic twist sliders on the side. There was no room for pudding not that we were asked if we wanted any and that wasn't the first time either, I felt like our waiters were telling us something.

We headed back to the hotel for a bit of TV and bed as I'd been fighting a cold all day and was feeling it tonight.

I see you've given Mike the heave-ho as a trip report writer ;) Quite right too - who needs that level of sarcasm in a trip report

Sounds like a lovely day Claire. I have always wanted to go to san Diego zoo and, if we ever make it out to the West Coast (read: 'drag ourselves away from Florida') then we will definitely go.

Daniel though Mike's burger sounded lovely - but that's from boy who has cheese and pineapple on his Nando's chicken burger :confused3

You should drag yourself away, you still get Disneyland on the West Coast plus Seaworld if you go to San Diego.

Pleased to hear Daniel is also reading our TR.

Lovely trip report Claire, interesting for so many reasons.;)

It looks beautiful, I'd love to visit someday. :)

It was a great holiday, apart from having to keep packing the suitcase as we moved hotels.

This sounds like a wonderful day. We really have to make the effort to visit San Diego Zoo. It was nice to see some of the stunning architecture of Balboa Park.

We are both big zoo fans so the world famous San Diego Zoo was a must for us but although we had a brilliant day I can't say it was a lot better than other zoo's we've been to.

What a fab day, the zoo looks very well kept, love the Pygmy hippo.

Brilliant report....San Diego zoo is on our list for sure actually Cinderfella may have done it in his life before Sammy ;)

The skyride made me miss the one at Magic Kingdom - love that they have travelators in the park.

Anyway great reading about your day and I love love your photos!

Awww! Love the pics of the Polar Bear, so cute.

They also have a safari park which some say is better than the zoo.

The polar bears were so much fun.

Another great day. Love all the animals at the zoo. I got to feed a giraffe at Colchester zoo, their tongues are like velvet so not what I was expecting!

Look forward to the next day:)
