You return the call!

Think about it. You need to take care of YOU, your employer wouldn' t think twice to let you go if the budget demanded it (hopefully that won't happen) and life is too short for "what if's" and to be in a job that makes you unhappy wondering if you should have called back on the job you REALLY wanted....

I left a company after just under a year. It was hard to do, I enjoyed the people and felt guilty after all the training they had provided me, but I got recruited by my "target" company. I had hoped to try to get a position with them after another year or so, but you have to strike when the iron is hot! I've been there for 2 years now and haven't regretted the decision for a minute!

Esp. since the prior company moved out of State since I left!

I say call'em also. We went through that last year with DH. He took a job for 2 months, left it for another--trained there for 5 months and returned to the 1st one after the training. I wouldn't recommend such a roller coaster ride but I think he is happy and content with this job now.

Well, sounds like you did the right thing by leaving a voice mail and explaining the situation.

I agree C.Ann, if you can find a job doing what you really want to do, then go for it. Who knows, you may get the job you want, with more pay, and better hours.

You are not allowed to make personal phone calls? At all? Geez, the people who work for me would hyperventilate!

In my experience, if you have the skills required for the job, normally what they would do is an evening phone interview. I can't imagine that they wouldn't be willing to do at least a phone interview.

Once, after two phone interviews, one of my face to face job interviews was after-hours. It was a 6:30 appointment and 3 people stayed late to interview with me. I brought them Krispy Kreme donuts to thank them for staying late. I got the job.

No personal phone calls allowed when I was at the hospital. But sometimes you can't avoid it. When I had issues with my mom and her attorney in another state, I briefly gave my boss an explanation and let her know that I would be receiving some calls and might have to make a few. But I put those calls on my card with the phone company. I hope it works out for you, C.Ann!

Sounds like you made that first step in the right direction. I used to do interviewing for my last job and I appreciated when someone was up front with me, like you were about your current job situation, and I worked with them as far as interviewing. Perhaps if a phone or evening interview won't work than maybe a lunch interview would work.

C.Ann, GO FOR IT! It CAN be done. Like many mentioned, phone/voice mail works until the final decision is made, then you'll need to figure out something to meet him/her.

My former boss hired me basically without an interview, he knew me already and, he knew where I worked and, he stayed after hours for a one-on-one before we Both finally agreed on terms. This COULD work in your favor! You're showing dedication to your existing job... A major PLUS! Worked for me!!

I think you handled it perfectly. Keep doing that. Believe me with my company closing its doors after 106 years due to the greediness of some of the partners, I truly believe that they will NEVER have your best interests in mind. And no personal phone calls - that is so juvenile. Gossipy phone calls with friends are one thing, but important personal business is another.

Just because you have a job doesn't mean you can't find a better one. Work with these folks to schedule interview times when you can do it.

I know that our company doesn't hire anyone after December 1st. Then hiring surges back up in January. That way the paperwork doesn't fall through the cracks during the holidays AND the previous year's budget can be closed. I think that's pretty typical.
