My MIL has also had one for years but, I never heard anything about the electric bill either.

Maybe you can get a budget bill from the electric company? They'll average out your usage over the whole year and, you pay a fixed amount. Just a thought.

Also, did you have some/any Christmas lights going last month? My December bill was also higher just from that.
