3 sisters + 2 worlds=5 days of Orlando fun! An Aug. '10 TR...final thoughts p. 45

Hi DIS friends! Happy Friday! It’s a little bit sad since it’s the last Friday of summer vacation but oh well. Before I start our first full day, I’ve got an update on my March trip. Because of the school schedule, I mentioned how I won’t be able to go when we origally planned. Dad, Mom, and Emma are still going to go then but I’ll be going later. Dad called DVC yesterday to see what was available and surprisingly he said pretty much all of the DVC resorts were still available. He told me to make a list of my first choices. My goal is to stay at all of the DVC resorts, so my options were Bay Lake Tower, Old Key West, or the Boardwalk. Well, I guess the Treehouse Villas too but that’s not really one of my preferences. So which one will it be? I’m sure if you’ve read my last couple TRs you will probably be able to guess…

OLD KEY WEST!!!

YAY!!! So I’ll be spending my spring break there! I can celebrate my birthday a couple weeks late and having a new job. :goodvibes Now I just have to try and convince my sister to come along with me. Normally Dad would be more than willing to but since he’ll have just been there a couple weeks prior I think he’s going to skip out on this one. Hopefully someone will come with me. I’d rather have a buddy than do a solo trip (as interesting as that could be…). Any takers? Haha Tinkgurl, now you are going to have to tell me all about Old Key West! I’m excited!

Now onto the update…

Monday, August 9, 2010

I suppose I should start off by mentioning we debated going to Hollywood Studios that morning since they had EMH and doing the MK the following morning since that was when they had EMH. We ultimately decided to switch the plan and stick with visiting the Magic Kingdom on our first morning (it’s usually tradition anyway!). As Dad told us before we left EMH looks good on paper, but two mornings in a row might be a little much. So the Magic Kingdom it was!

We woke up around 7:30ish to get to the park for opening at 9. When I got out of bed I had to look out the window. Nothing like seeing the resort first thing in the morning, especially on the first full day. Our view wasn’t the best, but oh well. Good morning, Saratoga Springs!

Good morning, little lizard!
44378_653128024244_20305212_37400159_7221896_n.jpg

We quickly ate our breakfast before heading out to our bus stop. Such a great location having it right across the street. I also had to take a picture of the area near our building because it was so pretty. I love all the fountains on the grounds.

40414_653127994304_20305212_37400155_6311942_n.jpg

Notice it was pretty overcast that morning. I was hoping that didn’t mean rain was in the area. After a few minutes a bus showed up and we were on our way! Congress Park is the 4th stop within SSR so we had to stop at The Springs last. There was an announcement that said if you were heading to the Treehouse Villas you had to get off there and transfer to another bus. All trip long I couldn’t help but think that must be a pain in the you-know-what if you are staying at the Treehouse Villas. Having to go ALL the way through SSR and then transferring?! Kind of annoying…just a heads-up though for anyone interested in staying there. :)

As we got closer to the Magic Kingdom it was getting darker and there were a few drops of rain. Great, just what we wanted on our first morning. Right around the Contemporary it actually started raining pretty hard. I wasn’t going to let that ruin our day though. It was still our first morning and even though it’s better when the sun is shining you can’t help but get excited when you see the monorails/boats, the MK entrance gate, and all the activity around there. And then there’s the music they play as you are pulling into the bus stations. I love that Mickey Mouse March, you know with the drum roll and all. Just an FYI, that song is on iTunes if you ever want to pretend you’re on a bus to the Magic Kingdom. ;)

Fortunately for us by the time we got off the bus the rain had stopped. YAY! It was still cloudy but hey, I’d rather have cloudy than rain. We went through bag check and right through the turnstiles into the courtyard to wait for official opening. I was surprised, it wasn’t all that crowded. Granted there were more people there than in April when Dad and I did 7:00 am EMH but still not bad at all.

Because of the rain there were CMs working hard to remove all the water up on the train station for the welcome show.

Before long they started making the announcements to move to the center of the Mickey floral because the Welcome Show would be beginning soon. A couple minutes before it started we called Dad. Before we left he said he wanted us to call him so he could listen to the music. Hehe We heard the chimes and we knew the show was about to begin. I really don’t know what it is about that show that gets me kind of misty-eyed. I know there are a couple of you out there who said you have never done rope drop before but are hoping to see it. Seriously, when you do you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. It is so cheerful, so peppy, and so Disney. GREAT way to start off the morning! And come on, how can you not help but get a little choked up when the man says, “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, WELCOME to the Magic Kingdom!”

Our greeter for the morning was Scoop Sanderson. I forget his exact title but I think he is a Main Street journalist.

I love how they have all the different Main Street citizens open the park. I think he’s the third one we’ve had, along with the mayor and first lady. He soon had his friends come out to help welcome their new friends. Good morning, good morning!

If you listen closely at the end of the video you can hear Claire telling Emma to check to make sure Dad was still on the phone. :rotfl:

If the whole teaching thing doesn't work out I want to become one of those dancers. hahaha

Pretty soon it was Casey Jr. comin’ down the track…with Mickey and a whole host of characters!

With the help of the family of the day we counted down to open the park. Time to head down Main Street!
45969_653128308674_20305212_37400180_8128944_n.jpg

I love how all the Main Street CMs come out and wave to everyone. How fun must that be for them to do every morning? And then we got our first glimpse of Cinderella Castle. Home at last!

From Emma's perspective...

I also spotted Tiana and Naveen heading toward Adventureland. Awwww.
44284_653128188914_20305212_37400166_3639479_n.jpg

As is the usual plan we first headed to Tomorrowland for Space Mountain! As we got closer to the ride it appeared that a lot of people were walking away and there was no time up on the board. Yup, it was experiencing technical difficulties. BOO! We figured we’d go over to do Buzz Lightyear instead and then come back.

I pretty much rocked on Buzz. The score to prove it…I believe that gave me the rank of Planetary Pilot.
46091_654460748454_20305212_37453499_5435251_n.jpg

OK maybe not as good as some people but good by my standards.

I noticed toward the end of the ride Emma pulled out her camera. You should know that Emma usually doesn’t do all that well on Buzz Lightyear. Well, she must’ve hit one of the big targets because she ended up with over 100,000! Guess she had to take a picture to document that. Haha
39233_1394057623894_1605780003_31167618_339317_n.jpg

After defeating Zurg we went back to Space Mountain but it was still broken down. We ended up getting fastpasses. But I guess it would be more appropriate to say we TRIED to get fastpasses. We experienced something that has never happened before. I went up to the machine to get our fastpasses, put Claire’s ticket in, and nothing happened. It didn’t spit out a fastpass but even worse, her ticket didn’t come back out either! What the heck?! It’s not like I’ve never gotten fastpasses before, I know how to do it. Luckily there were two CMs standing there to help us out so they just pushed a button on the back to retrieve the ticket. Still no FP though. I tried Emma’s ticket and the same thing happened. GRRRR. Why was the machine eating our tickets?! Long story short, we did get the FPs but the cast member had to press that same button on the back of the machine to do it. So strange. Our morning sure was off to an interesting start. LOL. Hopefully we’d have better luck with the other mountains.

Up next: Frontierland and Adventureland!

yay nice update!!

Hurray on the Spring Break trip!!! I've stayed at OKW once. After staying at SSR, I said never again because of the size but then I stayed at OKW and said never again. IMO, it's not like the other resorts as I feel like it is built for people who intend on either all or most of their meals in their villa or people who will dine at the parks and other resorts. We are food court lovers and there isn't one..just a walk-up place across from the pool and the TS restaurant.

We thought the rooms had nice color but were outdated compared to the other resorts IE: SSR. We went in early May and the pool was packed beyond belief that we took one look and walked back to our room and went to a park instead. We did use the quiet pool next to the building we were told we were in prior to getting our room # which never did happen and finally at 5:30pm, we asked for another room if the one we were to have was not ready and they seemed to think that us getting the room # so late was no big deal..except we had Cirque tix for the 6:30 show.

Mom, Dad, and I all said it was nice to experience it but we won't stay there again.

I'll be curious to see what you think since you've stayed at a ton of others!

:woohoo: for a Spring Break trip! Nothing beats the post-Disney blahs like having another trip to plan :thumbsup2

SSR looks really lovely in your pictures!

MK rope drop is among my favorite things in all of WDW so I love those pics!

Hope the FP machine trouble doesn't continue!

Yay for another trip!!!:woohoo:

Gorgeous picture of the fountain area!

I love the MK rope drop show!! I always tear up and sing along with the music!

Reading about the morning show just made me a 100x more excited about my trip  I started tearing up too! I am such a sap

I hope Space Mountain reopens! Can't wait to hear about the rest of your day!

Yay for your spring break trip, I hope you can find someone to go with! :rotfl:

I love all of the MK rope drop pics...I can't wait to finally see the rope drop show in November, I can't believe I've never seen it before! Walking into the park as it opens must be amazing! :lovestruc

That's so weird that the fastpass machine didn't work! I'm always afraid those machines are going to eat my ticket and what would happen if it did, I'm glad a CM just has to push a button to get it back for you!

Now I just have to try and convince my sister to come along with me. Normally Dad would be more than willing to but since he’ll have just been there a couple weeks prior I think he’s going to skip out on this one. Hopefully someone will come with me.

As pitiful as it sounds, I really wouldn't mind taking two trips that close together. It would be like taking a two week trip with a break at home in between. Especially staying at two different places, and being with different family members each time, the experiences would be different. Maybe I could sneak in a round of golf or two, or take a side trip to the Space Center. We'll see how things unfold; hopefully Claire will want to go with you.

I think mid to late March is one of the best times of the year to go to WDW. It's early enough in the year that the real heat and humidity haven't settled in, but the risk of it being really cold is pretty low. We also might try to catch a Braves game at the Wide World of Sports.

Woohoo, a Spring Break trip! I'm so jealous. My dad told me "Two years. We'll go back in two years." D: Hopefully before then! That is just too long for me, haha!

Oh, geez, my average score on Buzz is a pitiful 6,000- highest I've ever gotten was like 62,000? And that was pure luck! My shooter is broken like everytime, I just know it is!

That is really weird about the machine eating y'alls tickets... I never really thought that could happen... I just assume Disney machines are perfect, LOL! Hopefully that doesn't happen again for you

I got goosebumps from your update! It all started with the MK music on the bus. I'll be hearing that in less than a WEEK! I LOVE the music on the buses...and it is something I usually forget about until we are back again-or unless someone mentions it in their TR!! :goodvibes

The morning show looks like SO MUCH FUN! I really, really, really hope to make RD! If Joe is slow I'm grabbing Henry and leaving him in the dust. :rotfl:

We had a FP issue with a couple of our tickets back in December as well - the CMs ended up giving us a different card just to use for FPs. It was strange.

Love the update. :thumbsup2 Ah, MK's welcome show. I love it! I have the music on my iPod and I listen to it at work at least once a day. :goodvibes

We stayed at SSR once and really loved it there. The room was awesome and I totally dug having our own washer/dryer. :goodvibes

That's great news about your spring trip; looking forward to hearing all about it!

Great update! I love the MK morning show; it would feel so wrong to miss it! :goodvibes So cool that you called your dad during the show! Last trip when my daughter didn't come, I called her during Tower of Terror (at her request).

Hope you didn't have any more fastpass trouble!

A trip to Old Key West sounds like fun. And celebrating a late birthday and a new job sounds great. :thumbsup2

Ah yes, the Mickey Mouse March from the bus. I actually have an old Disney World/ Disneyland official CD from years ago with that exact track on it. When i first heard it on the bus, I recognized it right away.

I wonder how long Tiana and Naveen have been arriving on the train in the morning. In June they weren't there. It's nice to see that they're out in more places than just their meet-and-greet.

I think you will love OKW! Such a relaxing place! I loved the Magic Kingdom rope drop update! That is my favorite opening show by far! I just love it! The show is great and the anticipation of a Magic Kingdom morning ahead can't be beat:goodvibes

[COLOR="I have to admit, I'm one of those people who get misty eyed at the Welcome Show....I also sing along much to my daughters embarrassment...:lmao:COLOR]

You are a Vikings fan?! I don't think I knew that! Sorry they have to put up with his indecisiveness.

Yeah, seems pretty weird for someone from Oklahoma, huh? My parents were both born and raised in Minnesota, my dad made sure both my brother and I grew up Vikings fans! I totally agree with you that Favre should have stayed retired the first time, he took what would have been looked upon as a fabulous career and turned it into a joke :sad2:

Now, on to your update. Thanks so much for posting the video of rope drop ceremony @ MK, that is the one RD that I must see every trip :cloud9:

Funny you mentioned having trouble with your APs getting stuck in the FP machines, that has happened to me a few times as well. Thankfully there is always a CM there to help get it back!

I meant to tell you too, one of the "99 cent and up" stores in my neighborhood sells fake Vinylmation Jrs!

Are the fakes blind boxed? I just bought some on eBay and was worried of fakes, but I figured if it was a sealed cased and blind boxed I'd be fine.

We like to split stuff too. Even though we are all adults now those portions can be huge! We've almost done away with getting fries because they give you so many! Plus I feel bad wasting food...some people throw so much out. Hope that doesn't make me sound like a dork but it is so bad how much is wasted!

Nope, not a dork at all! I actually feel the exact same way. That's why we nixed the DDP idea. I know a lot of people are so full for dessert that they take a bite. I'd feel obligated to bring it back with me (along with leftovers from dinner), and then I'd worry that I wouldn't have enough time to finish it. I hate wasting food! Haha, got that from my mom, which is why she finished those fries at Electric Umbrella.

Unfortunately, the wasting food thing comes into play later on during the trip out of "necessity" ... :scared1:

Great update Sarah! You know i have NEVER seen the opening ceremony ak MK!!! :sad2: I just missed when we were this month!

I think OKW sounds like a great place to try, a first for you right? The rooms are very large and the resort is beautiful. I love being able to take a boat to DTD too. I know it might sound silly but the patio is off the room on one side, and you have a window on the other side of the room. It really added great lighting to the room.

I am sure your Dad would love to get to a Spring Training game, that is a fun thing to do if you love baseball. When we went in 2009 DH was hit by a foul ball, a line drive. Ouch. Of course the CM's were so nice to him. The facility is so beautiful.

OT did you see the Large Mickey Statue from Anaheim at the ballpark yet? We were there last night and I came across it on my way to Friday's during the 8th inning. I took a few of pictures, although the guard told me it is there to stay. Now we have a spot to take a picture if we have a mini meet.;) Long game, but a fun win, Go Brewers.

Since we've done SSR multiple times now I don't think the size of OKW will bother me. Heck it never really did at SSR. Most of the time we end up eating at the parks anyway. We rarely eat at the resort itself. I can't wait to see what it's like there!

:woohoo: for a Spring Break trip! Nothing beats the post-Disney blahs like having another trip to plan :thumbsup2

That is so true Dawn. Hope you have a great trip and I can't wait to hear from you and Caitlin when you get back. :thumbsup2

SSR is so pretty...even moreso when the sun is out.

I agree, the MK show is amazing. Everybody has to see it atleast once!

haha, luckily that was the end of our fastpass machine drama.

Yay for another trip!!!:woohoo:

Gorgeous picture of the fountain area!

I hope so too! I bet my sister will end up coming. Or even my dad. That I think would set the record for least time between two trips. :rotfl:

I never even thought about something like that happening. :confused3 Sure sometimes the FPs don't come out but your ticket?! I was glad it was easy to get them back too.
