Can it be done? Am I insane? I've been reading through thte Travelite website and really like the concept. It will be my hubby, my 8yo DD and myself. Does anyone have any packing lists/suggestions for a situation like this? We've figured it out and we'll literally save about 2 hours by doing so.

Thanks!

Yep - I've done it. :D You can also get some good tips at ricksteves.com. We have his bags for carryons and they are awesome.

I would wear long pants or jeans, then pack two pairs of shorts. You could bring 3 or 4 tops and plan on washing out a couple of them. Same with undies. Share toiletries. I also use ziplocs and packmate bags. Remember to leave some room for souvenirs.

Hope that helps!

Where are you staying? Will you have a place to do laundry?

We're staying at Shades of Green and will have access to laundry facilities.

Thanks!

You can do it! And you're not insane at all! 8 yr. old size clothes are small, and I always used to put my DD's clothes in with mine, and then the third carryon had toiletries, shoes, and a lot of space for souvenirs! If your family is comfortable wearing nylon soccer-type shorts, take those. They're very thin for packing, and dry out fast after you've been soaked on a water ride!

Have a great trip. I'll be envious of your light packing when we go this summer. I seem to have taken on the habit of packing enough to clothe another family who shows up nude!

Maybe we could coordinate our dates? Then we wouldn't have to pack anything, just show up naked! :earseek:

If only we could change our dates... I'd be happy to help you out!

Have fun, clothed or not!!!

This is our first time flying into MCO...we've always driven in the past, so packing was not a real big issue. Should we be considering trying to carry-on all our bags? Do they lose bags more frequently than any other airport or is the wait longer at baggage claim? Or does it just seem longer because Mickey is 30 minutes away :teeth: Thanks in advance for any advice!

Our concern is because we'd have to arrive even earlier if we had to check bags, because the rest of our party will have already arrived by the time we get there, and it seems unfair to make them wait even longer, and because we'll be getting home late at night and I'm sure that we'll be exhausted and not want to wait another minute.

When we were married (in 2001, a month after the attacks), we had guests who had luggage lost both on the trip there and the return trip. I've had luggage lost myself, and it just seems like one more hassle. Since I'm all for eliminating hassle, that's why we're trying it.

I don't know that this plan would work if we needed dressy and/or warm clothes, but really, how much room do skimpy summer clothes really take? LOL My 8yo's little tank tops are smaller than a pair of my socks, I think! Really, though, we are staying at Shades of Green, where they have beach towels, so won't need them, shampoo/soap dispensers in the rooms (although I'm sure I'll sneak in 'my' stuff!), and best of all, the mini BX, where we can buy any necessities without paying normal resort prices. Both my mom and the in-laws are renting vehicles too, so if we needed to get something, we really could. Chances are that if we needed something, my MIL would have it anyway! She told me I'm insane to try to do this (when we go to their house for a weekend, we usually take the huge pullman suitcase, and don't use half of what we take).

One caution against taking a ton of stuff, even when you're driving... consider how you'll get it home if the unthinkable happens. Unfortunately, that happened to us this last November. We had a car accident in Virginia and totalled our vehicle, and ended up having to fly home to Illinois. I'm sure we looked like the Beverly Hillbillies, checking in with our Rubbermaid crates! I prefer packing in crates if we drive, just b/c they're easier to handle. Of course, had we flown, we wouldn't have had half the stuff. As it was, anything from the vehicle that we wanted to keep - our nice floor mats we had bought, all the items from the glove compartment, new jack, car care items, any of that stuff... it all went into crates! I think we had 3 regular suitcases, and 6 or 7 crates, our DD's booster seat, we had to leave the hitch from our SUV at my parents' home.

Anyway, long story short - even when you drive, try not to take too much!

Hmm....I'm very intrigued with the idea of only taking carry ons. I'm taking our 5 kids to Disney for 2 weeks in December, staying at the FW cabins. I tend to always WAY over-pack. I wonder if I could do only carry ons...this has given me a new quest!

I'd think especially with 5 kids you could, since their clothes are smaller but you can still have the same sizes of suitcases - we're flying Southwest and the max carryon is 24x16x10. BUT, you're going in the winter, so you'll probably need both warmer and cooler clothes, so that could be a challenge. I just really like the idea, especially with all that happens these days, of not checking them.

We bought two new suitcases today, they are 24x16x7, with gussets that are expandable to 10". They are roller cases, and very sturdy, with pockets, etc. Just be sure not to overstuff them to the point where they're not allowable because of size.

I've traveled to Disney twice in the last year ... in August 2003 and then in January 2004 ... I found packing for a winter visit was tougher than a summer visit as I needed to pack for variable weather ... some days we needed shorts and no jackets, other days we needed pants w/jackets.

I was able to pack most of the kids clothes in their kid-size carry-ons using the ziplock bag method, but ended up with having to pack their jackets and sweatshirts in my check-thru suitcase.

When you think about it, the only thing you really need is one or two changes of clothes, a jacket, and your prescription meds and toiletries. You can wear most of your clothes on the plane (a la Travelite) and do laundry while you're there.

That being said, if you plan to shop (like I shop ;) ), I don't know if it would work.

I have done a carry-on only trip when it was just me and DH and it was great! With DS (3 1/2) now, it's a little harder because I stress out about him not having something he needs!

Good luck and tell us how it works out!

You can do it!
We went to Disney for ten days in April. I have two boys aged 8 and 11. As our trip down had two plane changes I didnt want to risk losing luggage so we all had a carrry on plus a back-pack.

We wore pants, sweatshirts and a light wind breaker on the way down.
In the carry-on's had five pair of shorts and eight T shirts each. Also two bathing suits, one pair of pjs, extra pair of sneakers and 1 pair of sandals. Underwear and socks for 8 days. No fancy clothes for me and hubbie as that wasnt on the agenda.

In the back packs put books, gameboys for the plane , all the toilet articles, sunglasses and hats, cameras etc.

Did laundry once when we were there.

I think that if you are okay with doing laundry once, or wearing a pair of shorts two days in a row you will have no problem. ::yes::

Do you mind sharing where you got those suitcases? We need new ones that will fit SW's measurements also.

Thanks!

We actually got them at Gordman's, for $29.99 each! They are made by Rugged Cargo. They look like this.

Luggage certainly isn't cheap, we found that out quickly! We had plenty, but didn't have enough carryons for one, and my husband will be taking quite a bit to Korea with him, so we'll still use these for my DD & I this year anyway.
