3/4's of nations schools now starting before Sept

Does it depend on where you live, about the Jewish holidays? I live in the midwest and have never heard of days off for the entire school for a Jewish holiday. No problem with it. Just wondered about it.

Nancy

We're in Maryland. Different counties start back at different times. In our county, the kids go back August 22nd. Our kids get off the major Jewish holidays. Also, on minor Jewish holidays, there can be no testing, no introduction of new material, and nothing due (reports, homework, etc).

We are in Fairfax County, Virginia.

By state law schools can not start until the Tuesday after Labor Day unless they have a waiver. My districts (including neighboring Loudon) apply and obtain permission to allow for possible snow days. We went to school until June 24th last year. I would love for her to start a few weeks earlier and get out earlier.

When I was growing up (in Prince William county VA) we were on year round school (45 days on - 15 days off). I loved it as a kid. Except for logistics of "day care" I would love this as a parent.

DS got out May 25, and goes back on Aug. 22nd, but they usually have 1/2 days for the first 10 days or so due to heat; no a/c. [This "if it's too hot, we dismiss at noon" business is HOE for working parents.] He's in parochial school, Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Growing up in the Deep South in the 60's/70's, public school always got out just before Memorial Day, and went back around August 20th.

Just a little  to ILuvWDWorld and ScoJo 15 - I am also in Cherokee County and visiting the World on our week off in September! It seems like half the people I know are going down that week! :rotfl:

Sing it with me, now:

It's a Small World After All;
It's a Small World After All;
(you know the rest!)

:wave2: Can someone let me know which week in September you have off from school? I'm planning to go the last week of September and wonder if that might be impacted by all my Georgia/elsewhere friends ;)

Thanks.

we are going last week of Sept but my kids will miss school for the trip...they got out June 3 and are back Aug 25...stepdaughter goes to Catholic school and she starts Aug 22 but she always has WAAAY more days off than my kids in public school. It highly irritates them but oh well...

I teach in Jersey City, NJ. The kids come back the Thursday after Labor Day every year. We have a week off in November "Jersey Week," which is totally unnecessary. It's too soon back, especially since we have 3 days off for Thanksgiving that month as well. We finished school this year on June 28th. With no a/c or fans allowed in the classroom, we had kids passing out from the extreme heat in the classrooms. It is just ridiculous. The kids who do show up at that point, are so tired, sweaty & worn just as we are. It serves no point to keep us in at that time. I would rather give up the week in November and go back a few weeks earlier. I would much rather get out of school at the end of May/early June. My family & I are hoping to move to TX next year. Looking foward to that school calendar and much more down there. I wish we NJ were part of the "3/4 of the nation."

6 Days till we arrive in WDW!!!!!!!!! :bounce:

YUK! I'm glad I dont go to school anymore! I thought early September was toooo early to go back!
In PA they go back the Monday before Labor day, then have the following Friday & Monday off....totally silly! (these schools arent Air conditioned either)

Here's a great story by Dave Barry on this topic from today's Miami Herald.

School on August 8? Are they insane?

Full text of article:

Here's a multiple-choice test:

When should the school year start?

A. Sometime around Sept. 1, when most of the United States of America has started school for many decades.

B. On Aug. 8 -- also known as ''smack dab in the middle of summer'' -- when the average Florida classroom is roughly the same temperature as a pizza oven.

If you answered ''A,'' you are correct. If you answered ''B,'' you are an official of Miami-Dade or Broward public schools. These officials have decided that our children need to start school on Monday, when children from normal places are vacationing with their families, or attending summer camp, or lying on the sofa picking their noses and playing video games, which is what God clearly intended early August to be used for.

Among the children who will be trudging into Miami-Dade schools on Monday is my 5-year-old daughter, who enters kindergarten this year. When my wife told me the date our daughter would start school, my fifth question was: ``Why?''

(My first four questions, in order, were: ''Aug. 8?'' ''Did you say Aug. 8?'' ''You mean, like, the eighth day of AUGUST?'' ``Are they INSANE??'')

I found out that the reason for the extremely early start of the school year is -- as you veteran parents already know -- the FCATs. FCAT is an acronym standing for ``(Very bad word) Comprehensive Assessment Test.''

These are standardized tests that are administered to all public-school students in Florida to confirm the sneaking suspicion among us older people that these kids today are just not as sharp as we were, dadgummit.

The FCATs have come to dominate public education in Florida. At one time, the purpose of the public schools, at least theoretically, was to educate children; now it is to produce higher FCAT scores, by whatever means necessary. If school officials believed that ingesting lizard meat improved FCAT performance, the cafeterias would be serving gecko nuggets.

So what they've been doing is starting school earlier and earlier, to give teachers more time to drill the kids for the FCATs, which are given in February and March.

Last year, school started in the third week in August; this year it's the second week. If this keeps up it's only a matter of time before we're starting the school year around Memorial Day, which means parents will have to go on their family vacations without taking their actual families, keeping in touch with their children by postcard. (''Dear Dylan -- Disney World is great! Wish you were here! How do you like second grade?'') Yes, it would pretty much destroy childhood. But think of the FCAT scores!

Some other ways we might improve our FCAT performance are:

1. Expel students who are expected to do poorly on the FCATs. The school could send the parents of these students a letter that said: ``We're sorry, but we do not believe your child is capable of producing the kind of FCAT scores that we need to maintain our average here at Coral Snail Elementary.''

2. Import students to Florida from places that tend to produce high standardized-test scores, such as Japan.

3. Cheat. Hey, this is Miami-Dade County! If we can't cheat, what's the point of living here?

4. Instead of starting the school year insanely early, give the tests later.

Ha ha! I'm just kidding with that last one, of course. What a crazy idea! But I sure wish we could find a way to avoid the gradual elimination of our children's summers. I suspect many of you parents out there feel the same way.

In fact, that gives me an idea: Why don't we all write letters to our school board members telling them how we feel? We could collect all these letters and put them in a big box, and then, on the day of the next school board meeting, we could throw the box into a Dumpster. Because I seriously doubt that the school board cares what we parents think about this; if it did, it would never have decided to send our kids back to school on Aug. 8.

No, probably all we can do is shut up, pay our taxes and take our kids to school on whatever day works best for FCAT purposes. On Aug. 8, I'll be dropping my daughter off, with her little lunchbox in her little hand. We prefer to pack her lunch; she's allergic to gecko.

School starts Aug 10th here in sounthern Indiana earlier this year than ever a week off in Oct has been added used to get 2 days now a full week. Wish I'd know that as we'd have went then rather than few weeks earlier without DD. Now that DD is in high school and in weighted honors classes and on ballteams taking her out of school is out of the question.

The kids also are goin long this year too don't get out till 1st Friday in June been starting more the middle of Aug and gettin out the last Friday in May. Doesn't make sense we gettin out later even tho starting earlier yet they actually only gettin an extra 2 days off school.

A little side note.... Indiana is also rushing adding on to high schools or building new high schools to accomate the 8th grade which as of next year will start high school YES 8th grade will be the 1st year of high school because Indiana has added so many credit requirements most kids can't do it in 4 yrs anymore.

Someone asked for our week off here in Georgia - we are out the week of September 19 - 23. It really is only a couple of counties, though. I am in Cherokee - we started August 1, with this one week break in September, a full week for Thanksgiving, two full weeks for Christmas, a full week winter break in February (always including President's Day), and Spring Break week the first full week of April. We get out on Friday of Memorial Day weekend.

I really like our new schedule. Of course, all of our schools have a/c, and my kids (well, the younger ones anyway ;) ), are bored before the end of the summer and ready to go back, anyway.

public schools start after Labor Day.

We homeschool so we just have to get in our 180 days. But because of a WDW trip in Dec. and a mission's trip to Alaska for my 12 year old in Sept., we are starting school next week.

This past school year we didn't get finished until June 14th. I'm sorry, my kid's minds (and mine also) are just not on school the middle of June. So I am starting earlier this year so we can be done the end of May. Something about Memorial Day weekend.........after that we're just toast.

Schools here didn't end until like June 24th. No AC......I heard the kids were soooooooo hot! I felt terrible for them. And my SIL is a teacher, she said she was dying. End of August isn't nearly as warm here.

We won't have to start so early next year, but my kids are ready to go back. The books are all sitting here and my children are asking me everyday if they can start. What a difference 7/8 weeks make! :earboy2:

So...I am noticing many people saying that school days were added....starting earlier, still ending late. So how many school days (actual instruction days) does your state require the school to have? And how many instruction days did your school schedule? We have to have 180, and we have 180 sceduled here in NE Ohio. DH teaches in a nearby district and he has the same...180 days. They start a week earlier than my kids, and get out one day earlier. But it is still the required 180 days. They have extra days here and there apparently since it does all add up.

Just curious about the trend!
Beth
p.s. In our area, it is MUCH hotter and more humid in August than most Junes. So even though DH is sweating up a storm in is non-a/c classroom, as are my children in mid June, he says most kids sicken from heat in the first couple weeks of the school year, in August.

I *believe* 180 days is the Federal requirement. (States would lose Federal funding if they didn't adhere to that number. Many States give individual counties/cities/school districts the freedom to "set" their school calendar.)

Massachusetts checking in.

Our town is going back on Tuesday Sept 6th, and our last day is scheduled to be June 20th barring any snow days. Last year we had over 3 feet of snow, and missed an entire week due to snow. The kids did not get out last year until June 27th.

I am noticing on this year's school calendar, there are a lot more half days, and teacher in service days leading into vacation weeks, and long weekends. It looks as though our Superintendent is trying to work with families (like us!) who skedaddle a couple of days early for vacation. For example this year in February, we are leaving the Tuesday afternoon before vacation week. However, DS is only going to miss 2 days of school (dismissed on Tuesday, miss all day Wednesday, miss half day on Thursday, day off on Friday).

I'd love our kids to go back the week before Labor Day, but our community has not embraced this yet.

Massachusetts varies a LOT from town to town. I teach and this year my town is starting the Wednesday before Labor Day, but only for Wednesday and Thursday. Then we get a 4 day weekend, a 4 day week for Labor Day, and then back into the normal school year. No time off in September or October (oh...I wish...) and it looks like we'll get out around June 16th this year, depending on how many feet of snow fall this time around.

We have 191 days of school with 11 days to be used as emergency days. We like in NE PA.

Start of school is August 29th this year and ends on June 16th. The only week we have off is between Christmas and New Years. Have some long weekends in February and April this year but that is it.

I am taking my son out of school in November this year. We are going to my husband grandmother's 85th birthday party and then driving up to Disney since I figured we are in Florida anyway

Well, I'm in Texas and 2 of my kids start Mon the 8th (one is in a private school that starts the 15th). Most of us around here love the early start date. First of all, it is extremely hot here so outdoor activities aren't real fun. The kids get out of school the 3rd week of May when the weather is a bit cooler. I'd rather have that time out of school than the time in Aug. Also, our school district has a fall break in Oct, a wonderful time to vacation just about anywhere and our secondary kids finish their 1st semester and have finals before Christmas break. The state legislature is trying to change the start date to after Labor day, ending the school year by June 7, which would mean no more fall breaks, much less time off at Christmas (they're talking about 1 week off) and they are even talking about only 3 or 4 days off for spring break!! I personally do not think the tourism industry (which is highly pushing for this change) should dictate when our kids go to school.

Sorry if I sound a bit irritated about it, but it's a hot topic around here.

I totally agree. I love that our kids get out of school in May. We can take a Disney cruise before the Summer price increases, go to WDW when it is cooler and less crowded. I really hope this does not make it through the legislature. It is still tied to the school funding bill and since that hasn't passed, who knows. Let your legislators know your opinion.

Here in No. CA, in our school district, it's not "days", it's "Instructional Hours". It's all broken down by subjects. The total tho is kinder, 36,000, grades 1-3, 54719, and 4-6 is 54719 (although 4-6 has a different breakdown of subjects. :teacher:
