I'm training for the Disney World half in 4 wks! I am a little behind in training as I sorta just started 2-3 wks ago, and was doing just fine until a couple days ago. The second toe on my right foot has started hurting. It doesn't hurt during my running but usually starts to ache afterward and anytime I walk. It's not extreme pain or sharp pains, just a dull ache. I know the best advice would be to go talk to a doc about it, but anyone have this happen? Anything to help with the pain? I ran 7 miles today and felt great while running, just a little achy afterwards (the toe). Help!? :confused3

The better bet is to solicit a doc's advice if it continues. The foot is really complex with lots of tendons, cartilage, muscle and bones. Chances are high that you are suffering from an ‘itis’ and a small appliance may alleviate the issue. But there are also several really nasty things that could create the same symptoms including fractures. A hands on evaluation and x-ray will focus you in the correct direction.

Sorry to not give you anything more.

Hopefully, you are off and running again, and this reply comes too late.
HOWEVER, 2nd toe pain is one of the most common running complaints brought into PT departments. The 1st toe is structurally meant to be the workhorse of the foot, but due to a variety of possible structural changes/defects, the 1st toe never meets with the ground. Instead, the far weaker, smaller and inadequate 2nd toe is on overtime. A healthy running foot should exhibit a callous on the "ball" of the foot at the base of the big toe. If yours has callous at the 2nd, then this is evidence a professional should see. Many times, a simple orthotic will set you right:cool1:.

Hope to see you in January!!

Doing much better. I stayed off it for 3 days and iced it and it seems to have gone away! Not sure what the deal was...:confused3

...but I'm happy to say I did my long run of 10 over the weekend with no toe pain!
