28-105 3.5 on a 5d?

I shoot mostly portraits, and have always shot with primes. I only have 1 zoom lens, which is my 28-105mm 3.5 - I've used it as a general walkaround lens on my 30d. Do you think it would work for my 5d at Disney? I don't want to take my primes, and this lens covers their range anyway (28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8). I'm so used to the crispness from my primes I'm worried that I'll be disappointed with the zoom, and with not being able to drop down to 1.8.

The 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 is my walkaround on my 50D. I have had it since I got my 35mm Rebel in the 90's. It's as good a walkaround with that as it is with my crop camera. Better really, since it's got a little bit wider field of view with the 35mm/full frame format. That said, it's an older lens and when I went from the Rebel XT to the 50D with the increased resolution I really started to notice that it's a little gritty looking when I pixel peep. It's not bad, but it does augment noise a tad and gets worse when you sharpen so make sure it's not an issue for you on the 5D. You said you were worried about a difference from your primes, and thats why I mention it. I also couldn't go with out at least one fast prime stashed on me for low light shots.

Ugh - yeah, that is what I get a lot with it - it just isn't as crisp as I want it to be. Maybe I'll take the 85mm with me too. Bummer, I hoped to just get away with one lens!

Or rent a 24-105. You will still miss the f/1.8 but the sharpness should be right there with what you are used to. And it has IS.

This would be ideal - but I would be terrified that something would happen to it! Are there any other zooms that would offer more sharpness without being $1K to buy?

Most rental places will sell you insurance.

I *just* realized that! I've only rented a lens once, and it was in a flurry (needed it quickly) so I don't think I realized that the damage insurance covers ALL damage. That changes things! I might get the 24-105!
