27 COVID Cases Reported on Carnival Cruise Ship

Belize City (AP) -- Twenty-seven people aboard a Carnival cruise tested positive for COVID-19 just before the ship made a stop in Belize City this week, according to the Belize Tourism Board.

The positive cases were among 26 crew members and one passenger on the Carnival Vista, which is carrying over 1,400 crew and nearly 3,000 passengers, the board said in a statement. The ship arrived Wednesday in Belize City.

All 27 were vaccinated, had mild or no symptoms, and were in isolation, according to the statement. The tourism board said

99.98% of the ship's crew was vaccinated, as well as 96.5% of its passengers.

The Washington Post reported Carnival said it announced last week that there were positive cases on board, but the cruise line did not not give specific numbers. The ship left from Galveston, Texas, according to the Post.

Carnival is requiring passengers to be vaccinated, though there are exceptions for children and people with medical issues. The cruise line said in a statement Aug. 4 that passengers must wear a mask in certain indoor areas, and provide a negative COVID test within three days of embarkment for cruises beginning Aug. 14.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on its website that it had investigated the Carnival Vista and the ship remains under observation.

Will be keeping an eye on this. We have a sailing booked in less than a month, which I believe is still 100% vaccinated. You think you're in the clear and then back at square one. Ughhh.

If there's any silver lining, ships have been working on COVID protocols for over a year. I'm so glad that no unfortunate guests are seriously ill and they are all asymptomatic/mild cases. I assume found by contact tracing?

Considering the vast majority of crew & guests on this ship are vaccinated and they still got these positive cases, it makes me worried for DCL. I have no idea what their vax rate is.

I think we can assume the crew vaccinations are legit, as most were administered BY CARNIVAL. Most of the cases were crew, not passengers.

I seriously doubt most crew are faking vax cards. Most people in typical crew origin countries WANT vaccines, badly, and are baffled by people in places with ready availability who are not doing it.

I disagree. Covid is never going away, so the sooner the cruise lines can prove that they can contain cases that will inevitably pop up, the better.

Not sure if this was sarcastic, but I totally saw this coming. Go watch any documentary or online news story about the behind the scenes workings of cruise ships...the crew live in super tight quarters, no chance of social distancing, and off-duty "fraternizing" is very common on ships.

This was a matter of when, not if.

I agree. I don't know why crew would have fake vax cards. There livelihood depends on working.
People in general public will for sure pull stunts like this. If caught on cruise ship ban for life.
The recent ones caught in Hawaii....ban from there. On the news last night they were saying

I hope so. On the radio this morning host said a 5000 fine. This was in regard to the 2 caught in Hawaii.

I know that creating and selling them is a federal crime. Not sure about just having and using one...if you printed it yourself them perhaps. If you bought it, might be a grey area.

If you manufacture a fake vaccination card and use it, you've committed a crime. If you buy a fake vaccination card and use it, you've committed a crime.

I read yesterday that some colleges and universities are equating students that use a fake vaccination card to be admitted to attend will consider that an ethics violation and dismiss the student from the school.
