2042 vs 2057: What's it really worth?

So I'm really torn between a new 100pt contract for AKV and buying 150 pts resale in VWL.

Cost diff:
AKL 10400 -800 discount -500 steve harvey disc = $9100 + Closing costs of ~$200 for a grand total of $9300 ($93/pt fully loaded).

WL resale $81/pt, 150-pt contract, about $12,600 with closing costs, or a fully loaded price of $84/pt.

Intangibles: We love WL. We like AK, but would probably prefer WL over AK. We will usually travel offseason- so I wasnt TOO worried about that part...

But, we give up 15 years for a measly $9/pt. That's the part that Im stuck on! Granted- I will be 74 yrs old in 2042- so maybe its NOT a big deal....
Anyone else struggle to rationalize?

The easy answer is probably "wait for BLT," but without knowing the cost, or availability- its hard to pin all our hopes on that.... plus we are already planning a deluxe disney trip for 2009- I hate to do it without DVC- since that "feels" like a waste of money now that Im set on DVC....

ARG!!!! :-)

The first rule that most posters mention here is : Buy where you want to Stay. We love OKW, and fell in love with AKL so we bought at AKV. We have never regreted either decision and truly enjoy both resorts.

In addition, VWL is one of the smaller DVC resorts whereas when Kidani House is completed AKV will be one of the largest - and BLT may be larger still if and when it is declared as a DVC property. It would most likely be harder to book VWL at a choice time of year than other resorts. This might not seem important now but one can never tell how your future trip choices might evolve. I like to travel at off times when I can, but have done a number of Christmas triips because it is such a :wizard: Magical :wizard: time to be at Disney !

Good Luck on whatever decision you make !

Buy at the resort that you would want to vacation, as if you could only stay there.

I was just thinking the same thing as you have. I too will be in my 70's by the time the older resorts contract ends and so i wonder if it is worth it to buy the older stuff. They are going to get harder to sell unless they have the option of extending the contract. Who is going to want to pay a premium point cost when the contract will not be long compared to the newer resorts ? It doesn't make financial sense. I think though that Disney will start to offer extended contracts on all of the older complexes. While i would love to wait for the newest DVC like BLT, it could be another 2 years before sales or a bit less. It's time to enjoy things now. The resales in some cases have been great because of the economy. People are dumping things now to get cash in their hands. You could still go to Disney and stay in some very nice off property hotels and still be happy.

But, we give up 15 years for a measly $9/pt.
I think a lot of people struggle with these decisions. Personally, getting 35 years at my first choice of resort was more important that getting 47 years at a resort where I'd always want to stay someplace else.

Here's one other way to think about it... while there is no guarantee, Disney may offer VWL owners the same extend-for-$15 deal they offered OWK owners (side note - hopefully, they will structure it differently). So instread of asking yourself if those years are worth $9, ask yourself if VWL is worth an extra $6.

We will usually travel offseason- so I wasnt TOO worried about that part...

One of the things that always surprises new DVC members is that apparently we all usually travel offseason. October through mid-January are some of the toughest times to book DVC (particularly VWL). Spring isn't bad, and Summer (when the resorts tend to get more full) is relatively easy as well.

Crisi and I used to go back and forth, until I saw the light.

If you really, really LOVE the proximity and decor of BC, BW, or WL, and feel that those are the best resorts for you to enjoy,.. buy them; extra years be damned.

I'd rather stay the next 34 years at my first pick resort that someplace that I didn't really love for the extra years. After going at least once a year for the next 34 years and are in your 70's, will you really continue to go as often?

We love DIsney, and go at least once a year for the past 5 years since my oldest turned 5, he's 10 now, but at 70, I may not feel the same love.

Also don't buy with the thougfht of resale, but because you like the use that you'll get out of the resort that you'll pick.

Thanks for showing mw the light Crisi. :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I too am struggling with that decision. I want to stay mainly at the EPCOT DVCs. The Beach Club would be choice one with it's great pool. On the resale market it seems to hold the highest value of the WDW DVC resorts. The Boardwalk is certainly less, not as great of a pool, but still the great location.

The extra years that AK get you have a lot a op apeal but in the end I don't think I would stay there very often.

You are not talking about the same resort but I will give you the calculation I did for OKW.

If you consider the extra money you are investing at 4% interest it was worth about $7/pt for OKW.

Do not know it that helps you any.

Oh my, I laughed out loud when I read your post. I struggled over this FOREVER. Now that I've purchased, here's what what I would have put MUCH LESS thought into than I did!

1) Your age? DH and I will be 74/72 in 2042 and 89/87 in 2057. I hope we're traveling at 74/72, but I'm not sure that's realistic. If the decision was based on just the two of us, I'd say buy where you want to stay.

2) Children? Do you have children and do you want to leave this to them? We have a son that's 12 and daughter that's 6. If we leave it to them, I want to make sure that we can continue paying the fees.

3) Do you plan on keeping it? Though I listed this as #3, this would be the #1 consideration for me now. If DVC doesn't allow extensions on other resorts, over time, selling 2042 contracts will become more difficult. If you're hanging onto it, at least as you today, a 2042 wouldn't scare me. If you plan on selling, I'd look to buy in at SSR, OKW (extended), AKV, or BLT.

For us...here's what we ended up doing:
* First purchase - SSR
* Second purchase - VB (Yes, it expires in 2042 and the MFs are sky high, but we want to stay there!)

You are welcome. The LOVE part is important. If you have a vague preference for VWL but would be happy staying at another resort, buy the resort with the most value (OKW, low fees - are they selling the extra 15 years on resales now? VAKL or SSR for the extra years). If you would be disappointed when you go to make that December reservation at VWL that there was not a unit for you, you should buy VWL.

DVC is a luxury purchase. If you get down to wondering what the best FINANCIAL decision is - its to not vacation at all and stay home sitting on your pile of cash (well, you probably should invest it - you can sit on the statements - not quite as satisfying, but we are making a financial decision). Once you make the decision to vacation, its really 'how much money am I going to spend for pleasure - and how much pleasure can I get for my money.'

You are SO right. If you book through Disney Vacations in any of the
Hotels the First 2 week of December there is no problem, but just try it with DVC

We are our own subculture ....I love it :lovestruc

IMO only, of course, I've gotta figure that someone who chooses this sound financial decision probably has some of that cash stuck up their behind :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rolleyes1

Our first contract we followed the "buy where you want to stay" - BWV.

Our second contract we went with "buy where you wouldn't mind staying and get a few extra years too" - SSR.

So you could consider smaller contracts at both and get the best of both worlds like we did!

I think it is all a matter of age and desire. DW and I will only be 60 in 2042 so the extra years that SSR offered was the main reason that DW and I bought there. We love WVL but the extra years FAR outweighed the location for us. We figured that if we had to be "stuck" at SSR that is not that bad of a place to be stuck!

We are already seeing resales for the extended OKW at around $95/pt. Thats almost a $20 increase from some 2042 contracts. I feel this will be extended to the other 2042 resorts, and I will extend. Resale value is a key indicator here.

Just remember if you are using OKW as a reference, asking and selling are 2 different prices. The only noted sale of the ROFR thread for OKW 2057 is $82.5 (about $10-12 more then 2042).

I've just sold my OKW at $85 a point for 2042.
