I read through the understanding use year thread and just need to be sure I've got it right.
We have an August use year and want to travel in January 2021.
The part I can't grasp for sure is if we can or cannot borrow from 2022 for that trip.

August UY = The time frame you can use your points is August 1, 2020 - July 31, 2021

You get them again August 1, 2021 - until July 31 2022

11 months before your January 2021 desired frame - (which is December 2020) - you can book your stay. If you don't have enough points for this stay, you can borrow the points needed to finish your reservation from your August 2021 points. Once you borrow them, you cannot but them back into that UY. They will expire in July 31, 2020.

If you don't use all of your August 2020 points, you can bank the left over into your August 2021 UY.

Easiest way it to forget about the calendar year And just consider your UY.

First, decide UY of trip. All trips can be paid for with points that are banked from the UY prior to the trip, points from the UY of the trip, and borrow points from the UY after the trip to complete the reservation.

So, a Jan 2021 trip is in your Aug 2020 UY. That means you can use banked 2019, current 2020, and borrow 2021 points when making the reservation, whenever that is...whether at 11 Months in Feb 2020 or anytime there after,

So no, you can not borrow 2022 points for this trip.

You cannot borrow Aug 2022 points for a Jan 2021 points. For a Jan 2021 trip, you can use Aug 2020 points as your applicable "current" use year points, any Aug 2019 points if first banked into the Aug 2020 use year, and, if needed, borrow points from your Aug 2021 use year. And at your home resort, you can make that reservation in Feb 2020 at 11 months out out from date of arrival.
