2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

I am running out of destashed gas! I keep destashing and I swear it is getting worse not better! Maybe I am just not seeing much difference.

One big difference I made was taking these center wood inserts out of the windows that made the big glass pane look like 4 little glass panes. The difference in light coming in is AMAZING!! I love the look & the light. I also cleaned every window and the woodwork, but am now storing the inserts, so not sure this was a big win, but I am very happy with the brightness in the house. That should really help answer hit the gray days of December, January & February.

I also bought flights for President's Week, so that should keep me motivated----at least, I hope it will!

I know how it feels to work and work and have everything seem the same. I know that I have gotten alot out but it does not seem that way.

DD listed some of DS 12 clothes on a yard sale site. so far nothing. I am thinking maybe I should try selling them as a lot? Many have never been worn or just worn a couple of times.

That is impressive with the windows.

I was at WDW last year during Presidents week, and we wondered why the crowds were so big, but still manageable. We don't need to do it all anymore.

In the last month I got rid of

-Barbie case, 5 dolls, 5 Barbie pieces of furniture = 11 items
-Kids clothes Lot = 6 items
-Teen clothes = 7 items

I made....
Barbies= $20

Kids clothes I was asking= $15
- lady offered me $20 if I meet her in the next town which was only 5-10 away plus I already had an errand in that area :)

Teen clothes= $20

$60 bucks made and 24 items gone :cool1::cool1:

I have a bunch of stuff uploaded to several FB sell pages and craigslist

I agree about the crowds being manageable, only new wrinkle is the no standby test at Midway Mania. That is little DS's favorite and we always waitn with him so he can go at least twice. He is the one who hasn't been as many times & always seems kind of hyped by all he's missed by being born last! Rofl

Got house turned over to Halloween yesterday and was going to work in master closet today, but it is a beautiful day & boys are home, DH is working. We are going to go play, think I hear pumpkin patch calling our names! Tomorrow is another day and the junk isn't going anywhere! Lol

That is one ride, we both love to do. We will go on the ride 3-4 times in the morning, always use a FP and ride one last time at night. We think it is addictive like a video game.

Beautiful day here too.

Gone are 6 drink coasters and 12 plastic cups.
18 items more out of the house :goodvibes

Glad to hear you are all doing so well. We have not had any interest in DS clothes that I listed. I worked all weekend and all day tomorrow. I have Tuesday morning off so hopefully something will get done.

I can finally say I am making some progress again.

Ds is now helping me with the dreaded hall closet. Its like an archaeological dig in there. Hopefully most of the stuff is going.

So far we have one giant bag of junk out the door, mostly papers. Its one of those big lawn bags, so I am happy.

Now we keep sorting. So far I have only saved a box of pictures and a folder of papers/cards.

We found some brand new towels that I dont like the color of, so we are giving those items to the young girls I have mentioned before as they have nothing right now.

I guess I know what I will be doing this week.

I have a winter coat to donate to the food pantry or maybe send to the high school nurse. I'm sure she'll find a high school girl in need.

Anyhow.... I broke my own new rule about "one in/one out" in regards to my closet. Found a GREAT new shirt (Gap white button-down boyfriend fit) at the thrift store yesterday and it followed me home! But now time to bite the bullet and get rid of something from my closet....oh the pain of it! But honestly, my closet rod is STUFFED (organized, but stuffed).... there has to be something there I can donate without any pain or guilt.

Off to be productive!.....................P

LOVE the idea of dropping off coats (anonymously) to the school nurse! They likely DO know those in need and how wonderful to help someone (many) in our own communities. Bless you for that generous idea! :thumbsup2

Yep, I KWIM about closets. Mine is similar. Organized but stuffed. And you know you have too many clothes when you run out of hangers, ugh. Ridiculous. I donate a lot and usually do the something in, something out, but still.... :rolleyes1.
Thanks for the new inspiration. I will be cleaning it out yet again tomorrow am.

I am working at home today. In between the loads of laundry that I have to weed through, I am trying to destash. I am working though recycling lots of old mail, school papers, etc and trying to get a bag or two of clothes that don't fit us anymore.

At this point, I just need to get it out of the house, so I plan to donate the clothes. In the future, I might try selling it online like many of you do. Right now, I know, it would just sit piled up waiting to be posted on a site, etc..

I have to go now and get back at it!

Thanks everyone for the inspiration!

I know what you meant about the stuff piling up waited to be posted! I have a bunch of stuff posted that I am getting NO nibbles on and I am tired of it sitting here!! But I set up a shelf in the basement and after I post something for sale, I try to move it down there until it sells (or until I give up and donate it somewhere!). At least that way I'm not tripping over it in the home office space waiting for it to sell. But of course, sometimes that means "out of sight, out of mind" and I forgot to bump up my "for sale" posts!

***************************

Happy Thursday all! I haven't made any great progress on the destash lately! I have several boxes of stuff that I have cleaned out and posted for sale, but as I mentioned above, no nibbles yet. I'm setting a date of November 22 (one month away) and if the stuff isn't sold it will be taken to a consignment shop, donated or given away! Sure, the extra $$ would be nice, but having a relaxing decluttered space is valuable too! So I need to make that consignment appointment now if I want to use the "good" shop.... they are super busy! So adding that to my "to do" list for this evening!

Trying to "declutter" my pantry lately and use up some stuff that has languished for a while, both to clean out the pantry and to save on the grocery bill.... it has made for some interesting breakfast and lunch choices lately!:rotfl: But some of this food was free (from my job) and I can't just toss out what is essentially a "free" meal!

I need to get a bit more clutter out of the house before the holiday season fully arrives! I was doing well earlier this year, but have definitely slowed down... plus I've gotten busier with work.

Anyone else ready for a big declutter push for the end of the year??......P

I have BBBS coming to the house tomorrow to pick up 4-6 bags/boxes so I've been working in the bedroom in our basement (which has become a storage room ....I've found stuff that belongs to everyone in the house except me in there!!). They have 2 more pickups in my area next month, so if I can get more stuff together, I may schedule another pickup.
They take books, btw. But only 1 box per pickup.
DD has a bunch of VS items and we are going to take pics and put them on the local FB online yard sale. I don't think they would get much at the thrift shop where we usually send stuff, so we'll try this option first.

Took 3 boxes of books to the used book store. got $60 in store credit. Kids came home with 8 books from the store.
The books the store didn't take are sitting in my car waiting for me to add the latest Gooodwill pile to be taken tomorrow.

We also got just shy of 2 cords of wood split and stacked. I probably have 4-6 more cords to go but that will have to wait til spring.

I also got all the food out of of the RV and all the water drained. I just need to wash it and get it into storage for the winter.

Not much else on the house front, we went apple picking this weekend and went to a corn maze. So now I have 90 pounds of apples to put up for winter! LOL That is tomorrows big job.

Made $54 at a neighborhood bazaar this weekend. I normally make quite a bit more but there was a small turnout because of rain and I left about an hour early. While packing up I sorted two boxes for donation and I can go back and bazaar again next weekend for no additional cost.

Seems like things have really slowed down here!

My declutter/destash for today will be cleaning up the mess left from my Halloween costume project yesterday! And I will NOT be saving any of the little "bits and pieces" of fabric other than what might go in the rag bag! My motto for today is "when in doubt, toss it out"!!

And then I VOW to hit one other area here in the house.... perhaps the office??

I'll report back later!......................P

I have really made an effort over the years to not save EVERY scrap. I am much better than I used to be. Good luck!

My thrift store runs have been sidetracked a bit, but I will definitely get back to them. I made a little bit on the kids' consignment sale that will go toward Christmas gifts.

I did a good job cleaning up around my craft area. All of the fabric scraps went into the trash.... I didn't even try to pick any out for rags. And then the trash bag got tied and carried out!

I didn't get to the office though.... I started putting away clean laundry and ended up putting away my summer clothes and pulling out the fall and winter stuff.

I may get some decluttering done this weekend though, because it is going to be cold and rainy/snowy, so I probably won't finish painting the shed..........P

I had a little shredding party this morning-lol! I had a basket that's about 3" high and it was full of stuff to shred. Then I had 3 plastic shoe boxed with papers, old bills, junk and receipts, I shredded those too! I had to empty out my shredder basket 4 times. Plus I got rid of a small waste basket of all the envelopes those darn bills, creditcard offers, junk mail came in.

Last night I started organizing my colored paper. I hope to start crafting again and use up my supplies.

I also organized my party container: tissue paper, party bags, tape and scissors for party gift stuff.

organized my Halloween cello bags and goodie bags. Got rid of 22 goodie bags I made for work and dds teachers. Next year I hope to bake more and use up more treat bags. I have 6-8 packages of those treat bags. I did get rid of a bag of Halloween sticker boxes and some plastic spiders I gave in goodie bags

I also put all stuff I can turn into gifts into a container and my goal is to give those as gifts

I still need to go through my xmas theme gift container bin and do the same

I still have dd's stuff posted for sale on craigslist and Fb sale page

I am trying to get motivated for the last push before the holidays hit. I did clean a little of the garage this week. Tossed some stuff and am creating a pile of shoes & backpacks to take to my school.

We bought new queen beds for the kids so we had 2 extra twin/bunk beds & frames. Instead of selling them, we decided to donate them to a local non-profit. They have a monthly fill a truck so we loaded them up with one of the dressers and took it over with 4 bags of DD14's old clothes. DH also grabbed a few shirts/pants to donate.

DD didn't want her dresser either so we moved it to the basement. It fits perfectly in a back corner so now I have some new storage down there. I need to address the basement because there are a few piles there that need to go or find a better home.

I also read a blog yesterday about someone who only keeps clothes they truly love. She said she has less clothes but everything she does have, she looks & feel great in them. That has motivated me to go back through my closet again. It's getting full again and I know I don't love everything in there.

I've been busy prepping for our schools auction and basket raffle so I am actually bringing more stuff into my house right now. But we got the RV unloaded and into storage so that's out of the yard..
And we bought DS14 a car so that has motivated DH to clean out the garage to get DS18's and DS14's cars in there. I'm all for that motivation!

After auction I will focus my efforts on more decluttering
