2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

You guys are doing great!! Keep up the good work!

Today I am tackling the never ending paper pile. I'm so over mail.

This weekend we are bringing the RV out of storage and doing a deep clean and I'm going to purge and sort. We stored the items in the garage this winter, but I want to keep the totes in the RV. I don't need it cluttering up the house.

I have 3 old computers that finally got the hard drives pulled out and destroyed so those will be going to Best Buy this week for recycling. My niece came and got most of my baby gear, except she didn't take either of my cribs (rats!) so I need to get those hauled out to the curb because nobody will take baby gear for donations any more. I have a pile of stuff in the front room waiting for the next charity pickup, but if I don't feel like waiting that long, I might just take them over to Savers this week and drop them off to get them out of the house. I am planning to tackle the kids' summer clothes in the next week or two to see what still fits and what they need. The outgrown stuff will go in my sister's Easter box for her kids. I discovered the hard way that several pair of pants I packed for Spring Break for my daughter no longer fit - oops! She had to wear the same couple pair for a few days because she literally couldn't zip up the old ones!

Put the cribs at the curb. I guarantee they will disappear very quickly. (I know I'd snatch them up if I saw them and I don't have any more babies!)

Well, the last of our company left this morning after 2 weeks :scared:
While picking up from them I found a large package of paper napkins unopened that we got from like BJ's back in 2009 :faint: So I just dropped them off at the neighbors. We don't use paper napkins so not sure why I had that many.
Not a lot but did free up space in my cabinets :)

Delmar, did the cribs go?

Movin' & Groovin' in my big room of crap today. Got 2 tubs of kids clothes & baby gear out to the consignment sale(only downside is I bought another bag of clothes in their current sizes, but successfully avoided toys we don't need). Got the twin bed & mini armoire, & my sister's aquarium all back to my mom's where it belongs. 2 small bags of trash, & I swear about 15lbs of dust & cobwebs out the door.
Hung curtains that have been sitting waiting for a couple years. Moved the large armoire from upstairs where it wasn't being utilized, down to the room where it is now housing my scrapbooks, and some other stuff that doesn't have a good home & it's allowing me to move some more of my Disney collection out so we can see it & it's not hidden in boxes. Not close to being done but feeling awesome about the progress. It's starting to resemble an actual room rather than just storage. Yay!

Nice progress everyone! :cool1: It feels so good to get things organized and under control!

We found out that BIL is coming to stay overnight soon because he has some work in the area. That was great motivation to clear off the guest room bed and get the rest of the basement in order. I scrubbed down the bathroom yesterday so it'll just need a quick wipe down before he comes. I need to wash the bedding and get DH to help me move some totes into a closet. I will finish the rest of downstairs next weekend when I'm more motivated to finish.

Does anyone else have trouble finishing jobs? I don't know why, I love to start them but really have to push myself to totally finish an area. Why is that??? :scratchin

I was looking around on Pinterest this morning & found a great blog about DIY projects someone did on her house. The garage project struck me and I started making a dent out there today. I didn't throw away much but put all the paint cans into a metal cabinet, swept DH's side, and moved a bunch of stuff that tends to collect in between the cars.

This summer, I really want to tackle & organize the rest.:cool1: We have huge wall cabinets that are just stuffed with crud. I need to pull stuff out & donate/organize it then stuff won't be falling out so much!

I started my staging area for the church rummage sale. I have a few odds and ends that I would be better off taking to the thrift store, so I will try to make that happen this week.

I assembled my odd and ends today, so it should be out of the house tomorrow!

Sounds like Spring Cleaning has been kicked into high gear! Good job every one!
I am exhausted, and have a ton more to do before the new bed gets here on Saturday. When we moved the furniture yesterday, the drywall fell off the wall (it was a 1/2 a** job that DH & BILs did when we bought the house, so no surprise. ..lol) so we have to get that fixed, & cleaned up. Then it's mostly vacuuming, & straightening up there but finding time during the week with work and extracurriculars will be tough.
Happy Destashing guys!

I finally got my dh to move the 3 boxes that held their remote control cars from my computer room to the garage. Instead of storing the boxes up in the rafters, he put them on the freezer. I went out there yesterday to look what we had and saw them sitting on the freezer. I turned around and walked back in the house. We ended up going out for supper-which I hate!!!

Got my box dropped off to the thrift store. Yes, it is only one, but it is out of the house and worth $39, according to it's deductible. Go me! :cheer2:

One box is better than none!

I am not sure why but for some reason I booked a Tastefully Simple party for Friday night, but after working on the other rooms that my living room & kitchen have been neglected & there's about a foot of mail piled up on my table...guess I'll be cleaning late into the evening...oh wait it's already after 11?! Oy, think I am delusional from lack of sleep...sorry if I'm posting a lot lately...

I got 4 large bags out of the house yesterday when the Epilepsy foundation came for a pickup. Now to go through the kids' playroom (again). The church youth group is holding a rummage sale to raise money for their mission trip this summer, and I told the kids that since the play room is a disaster again after I already purged once, that this time they can choose what gets donated, but we aren't stopping until everything has a place and they can consistently keep it tidy. I am thinking about going to IKEA to pick up some shelving units with baskets some time this month. At least that way everything will match down there! Right now, it is all a mish-mash of furniture pieces we've collected over the years and it doesn't look pulled together at all.

I pulled out the kids' summer stuff this week and weeded out what is outgrown and got it boxed up for my sister's kids. Dropped that at the post office this morning; sure feels good to get it out of the house. I never got to Best Buy with the old computers last week, so I need to get those into the car this afternoon and then I can drop them off tomorrow.

DH told me last night that a robotics club that he is joining will take his old RC cars. So they will be gone. I also have 3 to 4 bags for Goodwill.

Yay! Got the computers dropped off at Best Buy for recycling today so that freed up some space in the office. DD is going through her room today and tomorrow because we have company coming on Sunday and they will stay in her room. I did a pretty good cleaning of the main level today and swapped out my winter window coverings for the lighter summer ones, and replaced the tablecloth in the dining room with our Easter one. Wednesday evening while DH was out with the car, I was able to get the garage swept out and reorganized the corner with all the winter gear (boots, snow toys, etc.) so it is ready for next year. Also went through the upper shelves and pulled out all the summer necessities like bug spray, fertilizer, garden tools, etc. I am so ready for spring to finally arrive!

Well it's been probably 2 months or more since I have checked in  I've been lurking off and on though and it seems like everyone is doing well this year! I fell off the wagon. I started off really good, pretty much did my entire house except for the basement (the huge problem area) I started down there and then stopped. In February we booked a trip to Disney for May so I figured the basement would get put on the back burner again because we were busy making plans and doing other things. Well a few weeks ago the bug bit me again and over the course of 2 long toddler naps I got the basement in really great shape. We had our home improvement guy come and look at it last Friday, and he's going to start building our closets TOMORROW! It's a little more than I had hoped to spend but I think it will be worth it. I basically moved all our "stuff" that we need to store (we live in an older house with no storage, no attic, no garage) to one part of the basement and hid it behind a sectioned off area :lmao: We're hoping it all fits in the new closets but if it doesn't, I told my DH we will just get rid of more stuff. It's mostly holiday decorations/seasonal stuff and all my son's outgrown baby things. I cannot wait to have my basement be nice and organized! After the closets are built and we move that stuff, I want to finish working in our laundry/utility room. It's becoming a little bit of a throw all on one side now that the basement is cleared. I'm hoping having a place to store all our stuff will help make our basement nice and neat for staging (going to make it look like a family room and I'll have a crafting area finally!) not to mention hopefully be a selling point (look! storage space!)

Anyway that was wordy. I stopped posting because I figured everyone was sick of my daily ramblings. Being accountable to this thread really helped though because when I stopped posting I stopped working in the basement.

Today I sent my 2 extra car seat bases to a friend that is about to have a baby who also had an Eddie Bauer car seat. I think she only wanted one but I sent two ;) GONE!

Now that the weather is warm I'm feeling even more motivated :)

So far today I shreaded 3 bags of papers, have a big bag of cardboard for recycling and a bag for donation and a bag and a half for garbage. I am still way away from where I want to be.

With the warmer weather the past couple of days (although we have sleet on the way :scared1: ), I was able to get a couple of things moved from the garage to the church rummage sale staging area. As I've mentioned before, I still have stuff from my dad's house that is still in our garage from now over a year ago. DH wants to get to the power washer once the weather warms back up, so I will have to deal with it sometime soon. I may grab another box or 2 tomorrow, but I'll see how bad the weather is (the garage is detached).

You all have motivated me BIG TIME! Thanks for the inspiration!!:yay:

We got 8 inches of snow here yesterday (ugh!) so I didn't get any garden work done. Instead, I got a bunch of toys bagged up and then was able to drop them off for the upcoming church yard sale to benefit the youth missions trip this summer. Still have a ways to go on the playroom, but at least we got some of it out of the house! The kids have such a hard time parting with their toys, even when they hardly ever play with some things, that I find it better to just get it GONE. They forget fairly quickly afterward, thank goodness. It's when it sits around waiting for a charity pickup or something, that they start pulling things out and changing their minds about donating things.
