2013 BOOK CHALLENGE! Are you in?

Just finished Book #76 - Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I can't believe how long it took me to read this book. I am normally such a fast reader but found this really hard to read. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it but I must have read the first few pages several times and actually gave up once before starting again. I'm glad I persevered and the story was good but I think I just didn't particularly like her writing style. I have another one of hers on my Kindle so I may try that another time.

Next up is Defending Jacob by William Landay.

My goal was 100 so I upped it and now I can't remember what to!

Haven't updated for a while, I haven't read a lot as I have been studying.

Hi Portia! Your goal is set for 120! :yay:

For anyone that needs to check on their goal, the first post *should* be up-to-date to this point.

Just finished book #65-Single in Suburbia by Wendy Wax. I loved this book, it was so slapstick funny. Think "Mrs. Doubtfire" together with the book "The Undomestic Goddess" by Sophie Kinsella. I look forward to reading more Wendy Wax books.

I just finished up the Lying Game series by Sara Shepard (books 21 and 22 of 25 in my tally). I figured out who the killer was about 2 books ago and I was hoping she'd go a different route. No such luck. Glad to be done with that series.

Starting The Death Cure at lunch time today!

Goal - 100 books

Book #59 - "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho

From Goodreads: "Here is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers into the Egyptian desert where a fateful encounter with the alchemist awaits him.
This is a story that teaches us, as only few stories can, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path and, above, all follow our dreams."

I really enjoyed this book! I didn't think I would, as it turned out to be something completely opposite of what I thought it would be. I enjoyed reading about Santiago's journey, and what he learned about himself and the world. I would recommend this book, highly!

Next up: Not sure. Heading to the library in a few minutes, so we'll see what hits me! I'll update as soon as I get back.

I haven't worked on my goal at all, so now I have a goal of one book a week. I put Under the Dome on the back burner and will start with Divergent by Veronica Roth.

Back to finishing my history paper.

I went to the library today and came back with 3 books. I've started "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" by Alan Bradley. This is my book club's pick for the month. I've enjoyed the 5 chapters that I've read so far. Can't wait to get dinner over and done with so that I can read some more.

Finished Books #65-69: The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordon

Great series for kids! I read this b/c my 8 yr old was reading it & wanted me to read it too so we can discuss it. A great way for kids to learn about the Greek gods.

Next book: The Shining by Stephen King

#11

Harvey Penick'S Little Red Book - Golf Book

Wow, this is the first book I ever completed on golf except for Beggar Vance book years ago. Possibly one of my favorite books that I have read in a long time.
I have only golfed once this year and I feel I will be a better golfer than I ever was before.
Of course next ime I step onto the course that feeling might change.

#39 - Death's Door by Michael Slade

Horrible Book

#40 - Self-Reliant Homestead by Charles Sanders

A hands-on text for country living, this book contains detailed advice on everything from selecting a piece of land to raising livestock, from making wine from home-grown fruits to making fences strong and durable. Here is abundant advice from a real country homesteader, a book equally valuable for lifelong farm-dwellers or for the new-to-the-country city folks looking to set down roots.

This is a great book if you are trying to live a more self-reliant life. We have 20 acres which we are soon adding goats, cows and chickens too (already have pigs). Good resource

Thanks for that recommendation-maybe I can convince DH to read it. He's usually too busy golfing to read anything.

49/50 - A Death on the Wolf by G. M. Frazier

50/50 - Wings of Glass by Gina Holmes

GOAL MET! :woohoo:

Goal: 100 books this year.

#s 80, 81, and 82 down and done. All are Mrs. Jeffries Victorian mysteries by Emily Brightwell.

#80 - Mrs. Jeffries Takes the Stage. After a theater critic murdered, Mrs. Jeffries uncovers the victim's secret past: a real life drama more compelling than any stage play.

#81 - Mrs. Jeffries Questions the Answer. Hannah Cameron was not well-liked. But were her friends or family the sort to stab her in the back? Mrs. Jeffries must really tiptoe around this time, or it may be a matter of life and death.

#82 - Mrs. Jeffries Reveals Her Art. Mrs. Jeffries has to work double-time to find a missing model AND a killer. And she'll have to get her whole staff involved, before someone else becomes the next subject.

I love this series. The plots are well-formed, the atmosphere is spot-on, and the interaction within Inspector Witherspoon's staff is always enjoyable.

Goal Met!!!

30 - Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier
This book took me forever to read. I liked it, but I kept falling asleep or going a couple of days between readings. That's not like me. It was good and a very popular book several years ago, but it was a bit too detailed and involved for me right now. I am glad I finished it, though. It alternates between telling the story of a Civil War soldier returning to his home and the story of his love, Ada, who is trying to revive her father's farm.

I love his books!

Goal 120

#106 An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. I haven't read John Green before, he's the author of A Fault in our Stars which I had heard good things about. Liked this book and his style of writing.

Goal - 28 books

Book #26 - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey - I liked this ok. I enjoyed the "fight the power" vibe of it. I think my main criticism would be that McMurphy (the protagonist) seemed adolescent to me despite all of his worldly experience. The best part of this book was carrying around a 40 year old paperback with Jack Nicholson on the cover. Everyone wanted to talk about it.

Next up - On Writing by Stephen King - Yeah, maybe I'm another "wanna be" writer, so what? You won't be laughing when the next great American novel says "Krazy Pete" on the author line. :snooty:
