Let me introduce our family:
We are the Grindley's from Seattle WA area. There are 6 of us: Rick, Pat and our 4 children Shannon (20), Kristen (18), Patrick (16 - soon to be 17 on
May 18th) and our little one Kelly (13 - yeah she can finally go into the teen room!) Panama Canal cruise is our 4th Disney Cruise - and wouldn't go any other way. We are very excited about the cruise and have spent the last year "researching" the Panama Canal - and each of our destinations. We are now trying to decide what excursions we would like to go on. Is it possible to split ourselves 6 ways? Everyone wants to do something different. We only have 18 days left to agree on something

Are there any other Seattle families going?

Looks like we have our work cut out for us - I will be spending the next 15 days going through all of your messages. I did notice the message on the t-shirts - and they are now on the way to us. My kiddies just love it when we all dress alike Trying to figure out how to order the Door Magnets - so hopefully when can join in.

We all look forward to meeting you all on the cruise.

Attire, = There will be two (2) formal and two (2) semi formal evenings. There will be one (1) pirate(1)tropical nights. I guess that leaves nine (9) "cruise casual" nights were jeans are allowed in the dining rooms (don't even get me started!)

Food = There are plans to introduce new lunch and dinner menus so that no menu will be repeated during the course of the sailing.

One of our cruisers makes maps for a living. She also scrapbooks and decided to pull all of this together for the SOFs!

Mapmaker, Mapmaker Make Me a Map

I am the kind of person who gets excited over maps. Every kind of map. That’s probably why I make them for a living. I’m a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyst, and the short explanation is “I use computers to make maps”.

So when our own Paul (NYdiscruisers) found the USGS terraserver site and created a very cool map, I was excited. But the scrapbooker in me was a little disappointed in the resolution and the size, and I heard that from other scrapbookers as well.

One night in chat, Mark (Mark & Sandra) needled me into making one of my own. I have access to the same satellite imagery that is used on the teraserver, as well as a few more. In addition, I have many layers to choose from, including national boundaries, state boundaries, time zones, lines of latitude and longitude, and cities. The GIS makes it easy to label these features, and they stay with the features even if you zoom in or out! Plus, I can add or remove data from them at will.

So one day at work I set out to make a map. Since we also have cruisers from overseas, I created a map that includes the UK, but the Atlantic Ocean is very large, so I also created one that includes just the Americas for all the Canadians and Americans.
I included a layer that shows elevation in shaded relief, both on land and under the sea, and then draped that beautiful satellite imagery over the top, added the outlines of all the countries and states, and lastly the places where we are going.

Then my scrapbooker voice said, “Wow, it would be great if I added my hometown, and while I’m at it, why not everyone else’s too?” So I added all the places I knew about.

The image is 8”x 8” so it will fit through a regular printer and leave room for decorative borders and journaling on the scrapbook page. You can print the image out yourself on photographic paper, or take the image to any place that prints digital photos and have it printed for you. Then you can pound decorative rivets into each place you visited, and thread ribbon through them to mark your unique route from start to finish. If there is a place you plan to visit before or after the cruise that isn’t on the map, let me know and I’ll add it. Orlando is conspicuously missing. No worries, this was my first try.

By the way, my boss loved this map. He saved it as wallpaper on his computer screen. So I guess I’ll stay employed a while longer!
I would love to add everyone’s hometown. No DISnames, just spots on the map. I will probably only be able to label major cities, especially on the east coast, where everything is so close together. If you’d like to be included, please email me and tell me (1) your DISname in the subject line, so you don’t get deleted, (2) your hometown: city, state, and country, (3) the nearest large city if you live in a small town, and (4) how many people are in your group.

Hopefully by tomorrow we will all have our pirate names, and also add ourselves to the master list. Is there anything else I'm leaving out? We want to be included in the sailing away party, and the pirate celebrations (dressing for dinner). Just need to find the numbers for our state rooms - know they are on the 6th deck. There is so much still to do - but I'm going to remain calm

If you want to come to the wine party, you have to bring 1 case of wine each! - sorry, just kidding. One bottle per couple will do. Most people are bring one of their favorite local wines.

Golden Ears,

I was at POFQ today for training and saw the new golden ears there. They will definitely have them at DTD. I'd pick them up at work, but will be training long hours and won't be able to get them embroidered before we leave. Sorry...
