2005 Hurricane Season outlook worsens

Please be careful when purchasing travel insurance!

READ the terms of the policy before you put your money down. A LOT of policies do NOT cover hurricanes.

Especially if the storm has already developed.

And now here is Tropical Depression number nine. I don't know where its headed but it looks an awful lot like it might be going straight for Central Florida. I fly down on 8-13 and this makes me a little nervous.

That doesn't mean anything at all. Those things can change so quickly. The ones that hit Orlando last year, I think half of them weren't even predicted to come through but turned at the last minute. So if anything I have learned, it's that you honestly don't know what to expect, but be ready.

Yikes - I don't know if I should read this thread or not!!! I've never gotten travel insurance before but now a days... Thanks for all the views here - at least I may be an educated worrier now!! :)

What happened last year, really was a freak occurance.

So is this year...

"The new forecast, based on atmospheric conditions and warm ocean temperatures, would mean a record number of named, tropical storms. "

And you can't use the past as a judge...generally speaking they were much milder in # and intensity than this one is predicted to be.

My pamphlet from the travel insurance I got through Disney says:
"The insurer will pay this benefit up to the Maximum limit shown...if an insured is prevented from taking the trip due to any of the following unforseen reasons: (a) Sickness or injury....
(b) inclement weather or the occurance of a National Disaster that causes complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure and/or Destination."
(there are more, but this was the relevant one)

So, that means hurricanes also, right?

Just because their is showing an increased number of hurricanes, does not mean that these hurricanes will form in the Atlantic and head straight toward Walt Disney World in Orlando, ruining everyone's vacations. The chances of a hurricane hitting on your vacation day are probably less then your chances that the car or plane you are flying/driving in will crash. But that isn't being taken into consideration. Just come and have a good time and don't worry about something that may not happen.

Yeah, your right. In fact, I just checked the website again and they changed it at 11am so that now the storm is going to be taking a turn out to sea by Wednesday.

If you got the insurance through Disney, then yes you're covered. The company they use DOES cover hurricanes.

Those are being taken into consideration...My point is that you shouldn't ignore something that is possible and thus plan accordingly. I am not saying to worry incessantly, just plan accordingly and pay attention to what is going on when your trip is imminent. Most of the injuries/deaths that result from hurricanes are probably from those who said "Nah, it won't happen to me...C'mon, what are the chances?!".

If for some reason you have to postpone your trip, Disney will still be there next year, and the year after, etc... I, for one, will not be playing Russian Roulette on my vacation.

I'd liked to see the statistics for how many people have been injured/killed @ Walt Disney World due to the fault of a hurricane. I'd probably say 0. If you are coming to stay for a week (which I assume is average for vacationers), you may have to spend one day out of that trip end your room @ the resort, which I know that disney provides free food, games for the kids, and other forms of entertainment. As long as you have a place to stay and get away from the elements you will be ok. I just hate for people to throw away all of there long plans and excitement because they consider that there is a hurricane 100's of miles off the coast that may come ashore and ruin at most, 1 day of there 7 day vacation. I would call that "russian roulette".

Here's the 11am map referred to. I fly down on Monday, 8/15. Certainly looks fine for us in FLA. However, it could possibly be a bumpy ride down as this could track into New England around our departure day......then again, the more I look at this image, the more it looks like the typical jet stream path of the summer will push out even further so that it may not even have an east coast landfall

I had only heard that they provided food and entertainment, I guess you shouldn't believe everything you hear...kind of like the hurricane predictions!:)

It may very well be 0...but we are talking about traveling as well as being at Disney. You do what you want though.

Again, you are only talking about folks who are already there...not those traveling.

Or they could throw away their money when their flight gets cancelled and they miss two days of their vacation. As for throwing away their long plans..you don't have to throw them away, just recycle them. Disney isn't going anywhere.

Russian Roulette involves a game of chance with ones own life...I would hardly call a Disney vacation "ones own life"...though some on the Dis act like it's their life :rotfl2:

I am just trying to throw a word of caution out there...if you want to belittle that piece of caution, so be it.

Yeah, I'd have to say being at Disney during a hurricane is far from "russian roulette". I was there during Frances and never felt as though I was in danger.

Although we were provided no free food or entertainment. We were just held up in our room for 2 days, with only the food in the vending machines for food.
We were there too during Frances and they did have entertainment at our resort for the kids. The food was a box lunch and you had to pay I think $5.00 for it. We will be going again this Sept. a little later then before. I am not worried about it at this time.

I was hardly "belittling" anyone's advice. I was just stating the otherside of the arguement. Last time I checked this was a forum, which by definition is "a public meeting place for open discussion". I just think, and I may be wrong, maybe those interested would like to hear the opinion of someone that lives in the area, goes to the parks on a regular basis, and lived through the hurricane season of 2004. If you thought that I was belittling you then I apologize, I was just trying to give my opinion.

We were in WDW for Jeanne last year. We stayed at the GF RPC. You were not alowed to leave your room/the building your room is in, but our room was in the main building overlooking the lobby. There was lots of entertainment going on- The band was palying, Mizners was open, there was a Magician, board games, Cinderella, Prince Charming, Tigger, Pooh and all the other Pooh gang. There were free movies on the TV.

As far as food goes, at the CL there were all kinds of sandwiches and snacks, drinks and soft drinks...no charge but we were on the CL.

There was only 1 restaurant open and it was Citrico's. Instead of the regular menu, it was a buffet which had excellent food for adults and children and it was approx $25 per adult, alcoholic drinks extra.

There were constant updates by phone as to what to do. The next day the parks were open on time and you would never know a storm blew thru.

As far as I know you were not allowed to leave your resort and go to another restaurant. So you had to stay in your home resort. I guess it all depends on where you are staying, but that was our experience last year with Jeanne at the GF. It was actually quite fun...we ended up staying an extra 2 days anyway, so did not feel like we missed out on anything.
