Anyone have one and if so what are ur thoughts. My husband who has a 2008 Civic with 9k miles on it is looking to trade the Civic in on this Land Rover Discovery. The Land Rover has 130k miles on it and is for $7999. We owe about 19k on the Civic but the monthly payment is $420. We are really trying to buy a house and having a lower car payment would help for sure. He believes his payment would be about $280 give or take some for the Land Rover. I am nervous bc it is a used car. Please tell me your thoughts on all of this thanks!

My parents had a Discovery that I believe was a 1999 or 2000. They had nothing but issues with it. All minor, but it was constantly having little things replaced/fixed.

For style and comfort, it's hands down my favorite vehicle I have ever driven. I loved it for that alone.

Thanks for the reply...........much appreciated. I can deal with minor issues, but so afraid of the major issues! My husband is pretty mechanically inclined so that is a good thing..........but used scares me. His car is like a new car with the very low mileage but the monthly payment is not helping us out very much. :) And he really wants the 4WD again. He has always had Jeeps or trucks and then gets this Civic:confused3............not him.
Thanks again.

my neighbor has had one for a while, and seems to like it....however,I was recently at my trusted mechanics shop(specializes in Acura/honda but works on about anything) and the service advisor made a comment about one they were servicing(after I mentioned my neighbor having one like it) and he said"they are super nice, but a piece of junk"...now I am just relaying his opinion to you,as I don't have any personal experience w/them.However I would check Consumer Reports(library,if you don't have already) for reliability first. ps..we have a 94 honda accord that the odometer quit probably 12 years ago on..lol...probably around 300,000 miles...maybe sell your civic and get a cheaper honda,etc....car prices are good now,we just got a 2008 certified toyota van(no recalls so far),for a fair price.happy car shopping!!!:thumbsup2 also,my mom loves her Honda Pilot,if your hubby wants something big

Keep the Civic or downgrade to a car that's less expensive to maintain,Land Rovers, especially if used can be money pits.

I've had multiple Land Rovers, including two Discoverys, over the years, and they have treated me very well.

That being said, they are expensive to maintain and the slightest problem is an expensive fix. Avoid it.

When we were trading in a car to Carmax a couple of years ago, we got to chatting with the used car buyer about what used cars are the best to buy, etc. He said not to buy a Landrover with more than 60,000 miles on it, they are just pieces of junk. He also said to avoid used Hummers. He also mentioned a couple more to avoid, but those are the 2 that stuck with me.

DH has a 2003 Land Rover Freelander, we've been the only owners bought it new, and it is hands down, the WORST car we've ever owned!!!! The thing only has 36k on it, as DH uses it to drive to/from the train station. We've had SO MANY problems with the car and I'm ready to throw it on the trash heap!!!!! We'll NEVER buy another Land Rover, they're all HORRIBLY made cars!!! Don't wast your money!!!!!

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I guess it is a good thing that yesterday when my DH went to trade in his civic on the Discovery, it was sold 20 min before he got there. He was not to happy about that one. But it was just not meant to be. Thanks again...............much appreciated.

:lmao: I have a Land Rover and it is hands down the most favorite toy I've ever bought myself. If I wasn't already married, I'd marry my Rover. :lovestruc

It isn't so much that it breaks down more than any other vehicle, it is just as others have said .... very expensive to maintain. Tires alone are something like $2000 IIRC. If you're looking for a budget vehicle, that isn't it.

Do you still have ur Rover?

We owned a Discovery for 6 years (it was 2 years old when we bought it) and it was trouble from day one with constant oil leaks popping up in different places, so the the burning oil smell would waft into the car, problems with the ignition - sometimes it just would not start, it was like the car was dead or something, but the battery was fine - then it would suddenly start upon trying again after about 10 minutes, and various other minor annoyances. We finally sold it because I couldn't take it anymore, my husband would have gotten rid of it after a year if I let him!

But I have to say I LOVED the look, size, interior space and layout of the car like no other I have had before or since.

Good luck

I've been looking at the Range Rover (also made by Land ROver, but not the Discovery) and I told myself it would be my next vehicle.....and then someone told me that the Range Rover is the WORST car one could buy. Apparantly they are not reliable vehicles, constantly breaking down, and something with the suspension, they go out a lot. ABout $4000 to fix, and when they do fix them, they recommend putting in a different brand. Although this is in reference to the Range Rover, I would check into Consumer Guide and see that it says about the LR.

With that in mind, my husband ran an auto shop for 7 years, the cars he rarely, and I mean rarely got were Hondas & Toyotas. So maybe you could refinance the Civic or downgrade it to something comparable but older?

Therefore, I have decided that my next vehicle will probably not be my dream Range Rover, but the 4runner is looking mighty nice. I'm willing to spend some money, but I want reliablity and to me that spells Honda or Toyota. :thumbsup2

Yeah - mine's an LR3... I think 2006. I really haven't had any mechanical problems. The battery did completely die right at the start of winter and we had to get a new one from WalMart.

Oh, and I still have my husband too.

I dont own a rover but my sister in law does and its in the shop all the time for something or another. I know based on what I've seen them go through I would want something a little more reliable.
