My husband and I have a May 1st trip coming up and are going with our almost 2 year old. I know the CDC says face masks aren't required for children under 2 but I heard the airports are a bit of a mess and if I could have her try to wear it just for the airport I would have some extra piece of mind. Do any of you have small mask recommendations for a 2 year old with a very small face? And if not a facemask do any of you have any extra helpful tips for managing a busy airport? :)

Thanks in advance!

Plan on gate checking your stroller so you can keep your daughter in it when you want her contained/away from other people & surfaces. I would try to find masks with her favorite characters or colors so she can practice. The disney store child ones are pretty small if you want to stay on theme. (Definitely measure the ridge of the nose to chin to get the right size.) I believe the guidelines state under 2s should not sleep in the mask.

I'd honestly try the disposable kids masks you get at the MDs office, unless you know those are too big for her.

Also consider baby wearing. I’ve worn my 2.5 and even 3 yr old in a baby carrier and no one said anything about a mask.

if she’s under 2, and likely under 40 pounds, there’s many carriers (toddler Tula or toddler lillebaby) that are comfy, can keep her from touching everything, and will likely keep questions to a minimum.

I second disposable masks.

My 2 year old DD is on the petite side. Hanna Andersson face masks are very small (you can read the reviews and see how many people complained they are small!) My 2 year old turns 3 at the very end of next month and they did still fit her, but definitely already on the smaller side. They are on clearance right now. I also like Stride Rite's adjustable face masks for kids; they are super soft and I can adjust them to fit her ears just right - those are my current favorites. As far as Disney's masks - when they first released them last year, the smallest size did fit, however after they changed the sizing, they were a little loose. I haven't found disposables that fit a 2 year old yet, so if anyone has any brand recommendations, please do share!

We love our toddler Lillebaby...the one that goes up to 60 lbs. I discretely fed my youngest in it when we were at Seaworld, and used it to carry my sleeping oldest child onto a Disney bus on his 4th birthday. They suggest kids be at least a size 2T pant size to make sure the bigger carrier isn't too big for them. From 2 to 2.5 my kids could fit in either the bigger carrier or the mei tai carrier by Infantino.

My nearly 2.5 yr old tolerates the disposable masks that have monsters and smiley faces on them. I think the brand is Just Play. We have found them at target.com and Party City. The small size is for kids 2 to 7, while it seems that many kids' masks are more of a 1 size for ages 4 and up. These masks were the first ones my then-4 year old would wear without touching his face all the time.

I also have a very tiny 2yo! We use the old navy kids masks. The adjustable ears are great. It hits a little close to her eyes but I think since she’s so tiny it would happen anyway. I would also suggest practicing if you haven’t! We started with a few minutes every night and my mom used to wear it while babysitting (pre-vaccination) and she got so used to seeing it. Our zoo requires 2yo masks and so I practiced there and she did great!

We’ve been trying but she won’t let us even put it on :( she screams like crazy.

We are having an issue with my grandson too. He just turned two. He is also on the tiny side. They have reservations for November. He won't wear it for a second. They are now thinking of driving and re-thinking their plans too.

Awww! I saw someone mention they practiced by having the whole family wear them around the house. I hope she gets used to it!

Thank you! She’s used to us wearing it but for whatever reason she’s above it lol. I’m gonna try wearing it at home and see if that does anything. Maybe try to put it on one of her stuffies?

We are also driving for that reason. We’re worried we might have a tantrum at the airport and they might not let us on the plane. We’ve also been EXTREMELY careful this whole time so I don’t know if I’m mentally ready to fly anyway. It’s going to be a looong drive though!

Thats such a cute idea!! The elephant statue at the zoo had one. It was ADORABLE!

My two year old was not a fan at first. And because of our situation- she was not required to wear it for most of the pandemic (we were lucky enough to keep her at home). However, we have recently started to open our world and we have been having her wear a mask. A few things I noticed-
1. Age mattered- it was really like a switch for her- around 2.5 she was more tolerant
2. PAPER MASKS were a must! I found that when I put the material ones on her face she would panic.
3. When we first started putting them on, I would ask her to take a deep breath after it was on her face- I would remind her she could breath and she was safe. I do believe part of the reason she would panic was that she found it harder to breath with the material mask
4. We remind her to "hide her nose" while she is wearing it. That wording seems to click with her
5. We give a TON of positive reinforcement for mask wearing. (high fives, great job, big girl, etc)
6. We did try having her wear that at home at first- this was not really something she was interested in and didnt seem to make a huge difference
7. She has an older sister that wears a mask- that does seem to help a little
8. I have seen a few parents let their child have a binky underneath. We have not had to try it- but I think if we were flying it would be a must.

Good Luck! I am right there with you Mama. Hang in there!

I just want to say, as a reassurance to hopefully someone, my son turned 2 near the beginning of all of this (in July). We tried to get him to practice wearing a mask at home with absolutely zero luck. We basically said we’d have to stay home until this was over. Then we decided to try taking him to the grocery store, where he loved to go prior to the pandemic. My husband and I both went so if he refused we could just take him to the car and the other person could finish the shop. He had no issues and we’ve been smooth sailing ever since. He even asks for it at daycare now (he isn’t required to wear one there until he turns 3). He still does not want to wear it at home to “practice”. So try a few low pressure situations that you can leave if needed And just keep it super positive. We also let him pick from a couple of masks.
