2-way radios do they work onboard?

I read allot about people using two-way radios to talk to family members on-board, and I am wondering do they work good? Like from deck 9 down to deck 3? I have some that claim they are 6 mile radius, well not in my neighborhood!
I understand there are things that cause interference but really what do you think....
Should I pack them, or are there too many families using them, and all it is, is a listening device to what others are doing!!!

We found these very useful. We bought the Motorolla's and they were efficient for us. There were a few families using the radios. We personally suffered no loss with them. It was great for when we split up dh with ds, and me with dd for example. Trying to meet up on the decks or something..
