I will be sailing on the Fantasy next year and will be doing the western Caribbean cruise stopping in Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Falmouth. I'm wanting to do a 2 tank dive at one of these stops I have narrowed it down to Cozumel or Grand Cayman. Does anyone have any info besides what's on the site or any reviews. Thanks in advance pirate:

I've done dives in both ports, but it was quite a while ago - probably 20 years so I can't suggest any particular dive operators. As far as actual diving goes, Grand Cayman is a much easier dive location. Great visibility and little current to worry about. OTOH, Cozumel has great drift diving.

I too have done dives at both Cozumel and Grand Cayman a few years ago when I was on the Fantasy. Both locations where great. The dives at Cozumel included a wreck and drift dive. At Grand Cayman we dove at a wreck and a protected wildlife preserve. I used DCL to book my dives and both dive companies where great. Out of the two locations I do prefer my Grand Cayman dives over the Cozumel dives. I will return to Cozumel and Grand Cayman in March 2016 and I definitely plan on diving at both these locations again so I can provide another update if you PM me in late March early April. If you have any other questions regarding these dive locations just asks.

Haven't done either one from a cruise but have done both of them, Grand Cayman a number of times. Personally, I go with Coz. its drift diving and they have some pretty decent walls. The currents can be swift, which is what appeals to me, I'm known as the current queen in our family, the stronger the better.

We have done both as well. I love diving in cozumel. We have booked the Grand Cayman through DCL and have done both on our on and through DCL on Cozumel. What other information are you looking for?

I really just looking for what's better for a new diver I just received my padi open water I have 6 dives already hoping to have at least 20 more before I go. I can go down to 60 feet with my training. I know Cayman says the first dive is 80-100 feet but lower profiles are available and the second is 30-50 feet. Cozumel dives are the same depths but they say nothing about a lower option at the first dive.

As a new diver, I'd go with CG. The "drift" dives at Cozumel are a bit more "advanced" in that the current is very strong and if you get in trouble its harder to get back on board the boat.

I'd also suggest you at least move up to the PADI Advanced Diver certification.

If you have PADI 'OPEN WATER" certification you are an 'autonomous diver' ... and can do what ever you want ..... PADI RECOMMENDS new divers observe a 60' limit but this is a RECOMMENDATION. dd's third open water div after certification was to 100 foot and violated no rules ....

"safe recreational" diving limits are generally considered to be: recommended 100 feet (30 meters) for recreational scuba customers. The required maximum depth with recreational scuba customers is 130feet/39meters and 100feet/30 meters for repetitive dives the same day. Quoting from the Cayman rules.

I am NOT saying 'ignore PADI' but this is a recommendation and not a RULE.

MOST Coz' diving is boat drift diving ..... both of these factors CAN be considered advanced skills by some AND IME a Coz wall dive will be to 90 feet or so .....

{if the PADI recommendation is experienced based what wins? Depth ..... or a newbie trying boats and drift?}

Cayman is famous for its wall and lack of current .... it is EASY diving. BUT the wall starts at 70 foot plus .... a wall dive is a deep dive. AND the wall is almost a mile off shore SO you REALLY need a boat trip.

How about a couple of easy shore dives with no current on a DIY schedule with a profile not to exceed 50 feet?

Investigate shore dives at Eden Rock or Sunset House on Cayman ..... zillion mentions right here on CC

OR ... do the ship excursions .... they are SAFE.

certified in 1973 by a PADI founding father, still active diver, here getting ready for a night dive (her first nite dive) at Sunset House a lil while back . . .

I think its more of the current im worried about all my dive to become certified were from a boat.

If you are even a little worried about the current, go with GC it's really easy diving. We have been in Coz where there was no current and you can certainly do a reef dive there and not go deep but they aren't the best reefs around. No reason for you to be uncomfortable doing a dive, you aren't going to enjoy it if you are. No reason to go deep either, if you are doing a wall with a group and they drop down deeper than you want to go, stay high and just make sure you can see them. Be sure to discuss your situation with the DM on the boat, no matter where you decide to dive so they will be aware. Remember, leave it as you found it, come up slow and have fun.
