PRETRIP – Chapter 1 – Mousecatcher History

Well folks, here goes an attempt to emulate what I’ve read and appreciated on the DIS for a couple of months now :disrocks: . It’s finally my turn to make a contribution. Be kind – I’m no UtahMama or Zzub – thanks to you both for free entertainment!! (UMA – Here’s yet ANOTHER CAMEO!!) I must admit that 8 of UMA’s “top 10 reasons you are addicted…” apply to me, myself and I. Not just 1, but all 3 of us….

Potentially Boring Historical Background – (Skip if you become drowsy…)
My first trip to the World was on my honeymoon in 1985. As some of you will remember, those were times when straight-legged jeans (hold the rips and holes, please, and keep the waistline AT the waist, will ya?) was the beginning of every outfit. My soon-to-be in-laws surprised their son (and me) with a honeymoon trip to WDW. Now I must be honest here, I was not immediately thrilled. In fact I was disappointed because I had become brainwashed by the multitude of advertisements in the bride magazines with romantic honeymoons in Hawaii or the Poconos. Beautiful pictures of the most gorgeous scenery and those Jacuzzi’s shaped like a champagne glass!! How could I settle for something as juvenile as WDW? Is this what my in-laws think of me? That I’m just a child??!!?? Mind you, I had never set foot in Orlando, but ASSumed that this was like a gigantic sized Carowinds, which was my only frame of reference. I’ve been wrong in my life, but this occasion takes the cake, my friends…..

My fiancé had made many trips to the World in his life because his family has close friends who live just outside of Orlando. I saw that he was thrilled and decided it would be best if I just kept the whole disappointment thing to myself. I was so thrilled to marry him and busy with wedding preparation that I didn’t dwell on it anyway. Plus, I was only in my second year of college, had a part time job, and I figured beggars can’t be choosers (do any of today’s children understand that phrase at all?).

So, the big day arrives, we say I do, the rice is thrown, and we’re off to the airport.
We flew Eastern airlines from Greensboro to Orlando in no time. Yeah, Eastern – the airline that is gone, just like the 80s <sigh>. It was late when we arrived, but we grabbed our rental car and headed for the Hilton. I realized as we drove up that this could be more romantic than I had given it credit, but still was not ready for what lay ahead…

The next day we’re up early and ready to drive to MK by park opening. I’m totally amazed that trams are needed to get people from the parking lot to the TTC. Just how many people go here anyway? (still so clueless)…. But NOTHING could have prepared me for that first walk onto Main Street USA….It was December, just after Christmas, so everything was still decorated for the holidays. It was totally breath-taking!! My other obsession is collecting Christmas stuff, specifically Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, but that’s a whole novel by itself. Needless to say, I was completely blown away.

At that moment on Main Street, I was totally covered in pixie dust. After that experience, it must be that every time my doctor draws blood, he finds the platelets gathering to form ::MickeyMo . Apparently he is not concerned as he’s never mentioned it to me. I can only imagine that it’s because he has seen it so often in lots of other patients.

As we shopped and ate and experienced the attractions, I was mesmerized by all of those Mickey-shaped things - waffles, lollipops, wash cloths, trivets, earrings, you name it. It was like I had never SEEN Mickey before – not like this. Once my eyes were opened, there was no looking back. :goodvibes

And after 5 years of Spanish, I'm oddly entertained by the phrase "Por favor, mantengase alejado de las puertas"....so it becomes something I repeat (to this day) on random occassions.

Great start. I'll be staying at POR in April. I have 2 request so far, non smoking room and ground floor. Tell me which building to request.
Have a great trip. Let me know when you get back and we can change your thread to the TR Board.

A really great start and what a great way to begin your obsession. We leave in 6 days for POFQ and we cannot wait. Aviva (DD) has no clue we are going and the grandparents will be there too.

Chapter 2 is just around the corner!!

Avivasmom - thank you, we'll see you there!!
OhMari - Tip on building requests: I booked through AAA a loooong time ago. I called POR directly this weekend and found out that my requests were not logged anywhere :confused3. I was able to find out which building was available for what we wanted (non-smoking, close to food court) and request it - building 15. Initially I had requested 14, 27 (18 is smoking :sad2: ), but 15 doesn't look bad on the map.

Mousecatcher Cast
ME – DIS obsessed beyond recognition
DH – totally not 'getting it', but encouraging everyone to humor me
DS15 – appearance to the outside world “I’m too cool to love a large cartoon mouse”. On the inside “stays up each night with mom reading allears, discussing menus, ADRs, touring plans, etc, and creating his OWN spreadsheet!!
DS12 – appearance to the outside world – “I’m just too busy with Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic tournaments to pay attention to this Disney stuff”. Meanwhile, at home, “Hey mom did you know another Disney movie is coming on TV again tonight? Let’s watch it!”

Our grand gathering friends, a family of 5 with 3 precious boys (DJ6, DJ9, DJ15) This is their 1st family trip to WDW!!!

NOTE: DS15 and DJ15 have been buds since they were very small
NOTE: DH and Mr. grand gathering friend have been buds since high school

If you've been paying attention here, you'll note that the ratio of males to females is slightly skewed (7 to 2). It’s really no big deal - we’re used to these odds by now. It gives the boys a chance to win on occasion…bless their little hearts

Now that you know everybody, here's the plan starting Friday....OMG did you HEAR ME???!!! Only 4 real days to go!!! :dance3: :yay:

Plan to Catch the Mouse Unfolds....

When? November 3rd – 11th
How? My family will fly in with US Airways and our grand gathering friends are driving down.
Where? Port Orleans Riverside (Bayou section) - only moderate resort for a party of 5. Gotta love those trundles!!!
Why? Our school system is out for fall break in November. This is the first year our school has had this week off. I’ve looked at next year’s schedule and they do not have a fall break next year. Translation: golden opportunity that can’t be missed!
Dining? We’re trying Disney Dining for the first time. See ADRs in next section.
Magical Express? We’re trying this for the first time as well.
Transportation? We’re not renting a car and will mostly depend upon Disney transportation for the first time. Our friend will have a car so that we can make our late ADR at Whispering Canyon Café with no problem.

ADRs?
All ADRs were ‘complete’ by 8/30. Some changes were put in on 9/23, but here are the places that we have booked at this point….
Dinner @ Biergarten
Dinner @ 1900 Park Fare
Breakfast @ Ohana
Dinner @ Le Cellier
Dinner @ Concourse Steakhouse
Lunch/Snack @ Sci-Fi
Dinner @ 50s Prime Time Café
Dinner @ Whispering Canyon Café
Breakfast @ Chef Mickey
Dinner @ Liberty Tavern

Note: I originally booked the Teppanyaki in EPCOT/Japan, but after talking to a Japanese friend who recently went, she didn’t think it was good enough to use a TS and recommended we find another place – so Concourse Steakhouse was added.

OOP: Also, we intentionally booked more table services than we will get on the dining plan. This is trial run, so we’ll see how it goes and develop some lessons learned, but we plan to pay for breakfast at Chef Mickey and also for a dessert/coffee treat at Sci-Fi.

Length of Stay Mug/Coffee?
My husband and I are not pleasant in the morning until about middle of the 2nd cup. We're going to buy the mugs and try some of the crappy coffee that Zzub mentioned in his report. I, like him, do not want the extra work of making coffee everyday. Stay tuned for exactly how crappy the coffee is...

Special Events?
It is GGD (grand gathering dad) birthday on November 4th. From what I’ve read there are plenty of ways to torture, er um, I mean, surprise him. :rotfl:

Photos?
I would like to bring back lots and lots of photos, but we'll see how that works out. I always have the best intentions... :guilty: GGD has purchased a new camera and so I may be able to hijack some of his photos to post here with the trip report.

And finally, I really liked the TR that I read which ended with DOs and DON'Ts, so along those same lines, I'm going to include some lessons learned at the end of each posting. I hope they prove helpful to someone down the line.

Lessons Learned:
1) Read the DIS to save money, understand DDP, know how to use Disney transportation, know which restaurants are worth trying, how to best tour the parks, what things to pack, what makes sense to carry in the park and MUCH MUCH more. You just can't go wrong reading things on this board. I dare you to read and not learn SOMETHING valuable.
2) Call the resort directly before you leave to verify your special requests as AAA travel agents are apparently prone to have an unexpected 'special requests filter'

The trip is behind me now, so it's time to get this report going. I'm working on learning how to include pictures, so thanks for bearing with me.

Monymony - the DJ is the way I have designated my friend's 3 boys. Their names all start with J. I'm not sure if real names will be revealed just yet.

After planning for many months, I was bouncing off of the walls the day before our trip. I had to work, but couldn't keep the brain engaged in business. (I found lots of :earsboy: shaped doodles on my desk when I returned to work this week :sunny: ). I felt my throat getting scratchy, so I reached for the Zicam. In case you don't know about this stuff (no - I don't work for them or know anyone who does) it really works. I used it for 4 days straight and DID NOT come down with a full blown cold. It kept nagging at me at times, but it was completely manageable and I never felt bad. :goodvibes The key is to start using it as soon as possible and keep it up for several days.

On to the day before actitivies!!

Although I had started packing a week ahead, I found that :laundy: still needed to be done for the boys before I could pack. I knew about some changes to baggage weight restrictions and didn't want to have to pay for excess baggage, so I planned to bring more smaller luggage. We ended up with 2 large suitcases and three smaller ones, plus 2 carry-on back-packs. I put the magical express yellow tags on the bags as well as the new luggage tags that came in our package from AAA.

I ended up getting to bed at 1am, facing a 3:30am wake-up for day of travel. I'm good as long as there is plenty of :coffee: Poor DH, who owns his own business, was up all night doing paperwork and coordinating coverage for everything. The kids were asleep by 10pm which was great.

So, I run down my checklist as I close my eyes...mail held, newspaper stopped, clothes packed, camera packed, ponchos and glow sticks packed, pet sitter ready to take care of the doggies with additional instructions on the kitchen counter, gas in the vehicle, tickets, money and ID handy in the purse, clothes layed out for everyone to jump into, no laundry left in the washer :scared: , ME tags on luggage, print out of schedule/plan handy in back-pack, everyone set with slip on shoes for easy removal at airport, mousekeeper envelopes printed and packed, cell phones charging, and ipod/psp entertainment charged and ready for boys. Oh great, now it's 1:30am!!!! Stop thinking and GO TO SLEEP for crying out loud, will ya??!!??

LESSONS LEARNED
1) Zicam still works
2) Don't make any plans 'brain heavy' work the day before a WDW vacation
3) Next time plan laundry earlier and maybe buy more clothes to avoid having too much prior to leaving
4) Resort to hard copy of the checklist under the pillow if necessary to prevent 'repetitive brain checklist replay'...(checklist was kept as Excel spreadsheet soft copy on my laptop this trip)
