Not members yet & This is probably getting ahead of the game for us but we want to understand all aspects since we ARE buying in just still deciding resort, points, etc
If we get XXX as home resort at 160 pts. and YYY as home resort at 100 pts. I understand that means we can call for reservations as far as 11 mos out at those 2 resorts, but what if We want a week in a GV and it is 234 pts- Can we use pts from XXX resort and YYY resort together for reservation at YYY resort? Hoping the X&Y isn't confusing but I am being generic there since we are still deciding- Oh! & what resorts are considered "sold-out"?

Also, if we want to reserve AAA resort which we would not be home resorted to- can we "pool" points together from XXX & YYY for that also?

You can combine your points at the 7 month mark to make reservations. Prior to that you can only use them at 11 months at each specific resort that the points are contracted to.

Can we make a reservation based on first home resort points and then @ 7 mos upgrade the reservation? Is that where people end up getting split reserves? Having to switch rooms, etc? OR if I reserve for a 2BR and upgrade at 7 mos to a GV would 1st reserve have to be cancelled and points go into different status? We may have to just choose the best we like and get 200 pts total from one home resort.??

as already stated, no. if you run out of XXX pts at 11 months out, you are stuck till the 7 month window.

you can borrow (or bank) to get to the 234 pts at XXX, though. this is why many owners might buy a 50 pt add-on at VWL (or whatever)...to use 150 pts every third year at VWL.

Hoping the X&Y isn't confusing but I am being generic there since we are still deciding- Oh! & what resorts are considered "sold-out"?

right now, everything but AKV is technically "sold out."

BUT...DVC is constantly reacquiring pts through ROFR and foreclosures and has inventory of all the DVC resorts which they will happily sell you for a price...(some UY months are sold out and you would have to waitlist.)

Also, if we want to reserve AAA resort which we would not be home resorted to- can we "pool" points together from XXX & YYY for that also?

as long as both XXX and YYY are under the same member number ("master contract"), you can pool pts together at 7 months to book anything.

please scan through threads on the DVC forum and learn to use the search function - you can learn a lot here before risking a lot of money on something you don't understand... have fun!

Can we make a reservation based on first home resort points and then @ 7 mos upgrade the reservation?

depending on availability, yes. (not sure what you mean by "upgrade", though.)

most owners book their home resort at 11 months and then try to switch at 7 months if they want to try another resort. (if this fails and you own at vero beach...that means no wdw....and this is why most posters on the forum will tell you to only buy at VB if you intend to stay there.)

Is that where people end up getting split reserves? Having to switch rooms, etc?

generally, yes. for example, i booked 5 nights at OKW in december at 11 months and wanted to switch to AKV at 7 months - so i waitlisted at 7 months since everything was completely booked up. last month, the waitlist came through for the first 2 nights, but unless the other 3 nights come through, i'll be switching resorts halfway through my vacation.

OR if I reserve for a 2BR and upgrade at 7 mos to a GV would 1st reserve have to be cancelled and points go into different status?

pts would not go into a different status (for the most part, this is only an issue if you cancel within a month of arrival date), but you would have to cancel and rebook - if a GV is not available, you would have to waitlist. you would gain no advantage in booking a GV by having a 2BR already booked.

We may have to just choose the best we like and get 200 pts total from one home resort.??

the typical advice from experienced owners here is "buy where you want to stay" or at least..."buy where you don't mind staying."

you can also buy a resale of 100 pts at one resort, then add-on 100 pts at another resort. this would give you 200 pts every other year at 2 different resorts.

Chalee, thx- So under same contract we can pool at 7 mos since the one set of pts would not be home resort pts- I get that- You mentioned something I didn't think of- so if we just want to rent pts from someone else to add to ours... ( I think I have asked on this before but nothing was clearly put) the pts we rent would have to be for same resort? Am I getting this? OR as you mentioned we could bank & borrow to save for one year a very fabulous stay versus other years just accomodations that would absolutely house us... I think I am understanding- & no, I have been researching this through here and the resort sites as well as an "unofficial" source w/ questions to our Guide as well- I am disheartened to hear that all else are sold out other than AKV though- I keep seeing people post that they just closed on OKW or HH ... Was that through resales then? I looked at resales but understand that the contract ends whenever the original contract ends and that certain benefits are not available- Also, does a resale purchase still make you a DVC member or just a resort deed owner?

if you are an owner, you can either 1) get another owner to transfer their pts to you (you can only do this once per year) - and you can book those pts at 11 months based on THEIR home resort status - or 2) you can still rent pts from another owner, in which case you will have no more control over the reservation than any other renter.

so in the case of a "transfer" of pts from a different home resort, you could NOT book them until 7 months out.

go back and re-read what i posted - you can still buy any resort directly. there may not be any incentives available for a "sold out" resort and you may have to push your guide to sell you a "sold out" resort (as they are compensated differently for those, i believe) but it can be done.

I looked at resales but understand that the contract ends whenever the original contract ends and that certain benefits are not available- Also, does a resale purchase still make you a DVC member or just a resort deed owner?

the contract for a resort ends when it ends. it doesn't matter whether you buy SSR direct or resale - it will still end in 2054. if you purchase VWL direct, it will still end in 2042.

a resale purchaser is treated identically to a direct purchaser.

there is no difference in either case whether you buy resale or not.

(there is a confusing issue if you buy OKW - all direct purchases of OKW end in 2057 while OKW resales may end in either 2042 or 2057...you have to pay attention. but that is unusual...)

Thanks Chalee! :cheer2: All of your information has been great! I am anxiously waiting for our Guide to call (I would call but I'd like to still have him believe we are on the post so if there are incentives available- he will offer to get us hooked)- which we already are! LOL Still many questions- I have my pad ready and if he doesn't call by 3 then I guess I will pick up the phone-
