Hello all!
My partner and I will both be going to Disneyland for the first time May 31st-June 5th
I have a bunch of questions and understand there are probably mass sticky threads that can answer all if not most of my questions but I always like to ask members of a forum personally instead of reading a number of threads all over, but that's just me....also many things may have changed since those sticky threads were made and I want most recent experiences to help me out.

We will have 4-day park hopper passes that we plan to use on the 1st-4th and I believe they should have a magic morning included as well.
I am part of a vacation club and we will be staying 1st-5th at Paradise Pier Hotel.

We need to find a room very close to the parks on Sunday, the day we arrive into Cali, any suggestions for a hotel to stay at that is real close to the parks and easy enough to transfer over to Paradise Pier the next day? We will have a car so that's no issue, but would like to stay remotely close to the parks.

Now onto park questions:
Fast passes: what do you all recommend with these? Which should we gun for first, etc?
Anna & Elsa: I know they have now been moved over to California Adventure, do they too still have a fast past available since they have been moved?
What are the things that you all recommend as must-dos for 2 first-timers?
I know there will be changes occurring with the 60th Anniversary Celebration coming up, so what are recommendations for best spots/locations to be in when shows like the fireworks, World of Color, and the night parade happen to get the best view of these shows?
In my vacation club package that I booked I have a character breakfast included which I believe is the Minnie and Friends one, but also wanted to book Ariel's Grotto, do you think that is a nice one to book as well?

My other question is in regards to the Photo+ Pass. If I purchase it now I can still use it when I go to the park? There isn't an expiration anywhere on it correct? Also what do I need to do to get the pass upon doing some initial research I think I remember having to exchange a voucher or something of the sorts in order to get the lanyard to use the photo pass, is that correct as well?

Finally, and and ALL suggestions are always welcome to make this trip for us the utmost success and fun.

Thanks in advance!!!

FIRST OFF WELCOME TO THE DISBOARDS

Let me Apologize for the above poster. You are new here and I would never treat some one so bad. Now on to what I can answer for you but the best place to go is Hydro Guys threads in the sticky posts at the top of the form pages. He is the best well one of the best. Three I can think of Sherry, Figment, and Hydro Guy if they can't answer it, it cant be answered.

Desert inn right across the street is normally under 100 a night and it works for most people.
Even if you don't have magic morning on the ticket for some reason. You will have it at Paradise pier. (Day you check in and day you check out as well)
Say you check in at 6 am. You can use the early entry in to one of the parks that day. Same as the day you check out. As soon as you are checked in you are as good as gold in that regards. (We are thinking of having a split stay in DEC and try an onsite hotel if we do just DL as our trip)

Fast passes. I dont know what you like but I would say these are the top ones for each park.
DL- Space, Splash, HM (if it has fp at the time),Indiana johns if you want that. Star tours.
DCA- RSR if you want to ride it you have to get a FP or go on single rider line. Sorrin, Toy story mania if you want to ride it. I don't do the rest but Tower of Terror, The roller coaster, and the fun wheel (also known by some dis members as the wheel of death just not my cup of tea)

Anna and Elsa yes I think they still have fast passes but I went in Nov before they changed them over to DCA so I can't say how it works.
When the forms search is back up and running please look up some of your questions as I am sure it has been answered some where here.
It is much harder to navigate since the updates a few days ago. I like some of it but dislike other parts. I hope you can find the answers you want.

Photo pass is my best advice on trips. GET IT and don't look back. Buy online before you go for cheaper price. When you get there turn the voucher in you will receive and then you will get the Photo pass lanyard and all the things will be explained. It will then start being counted as your days. Not before you turn in the voucher.

It will be hot but also pack ponchos, and sunscreen both will be needed no matter what. Also if it rains on you at all do not run away and hide use the rain and get walk on rides. Many ppl hide from the rain. I have learned take advantage of it. If you don't need the ponchos all well but I now have one for us each trip no matter the time of year.
I hope I helped a little bit.

Give me more info I'll check back and see if I can add more for you. What do you guys like what kind of food? Things like that

Appreciate your KIND reply and can't understand why anyone has to be rude about the littlest things. If someone had nothing to contribute but being a jerk then why bother?

Your reply def helped to get my feet wet in the knowledge department for a newbie.
I think I will def get that photo+ pass as it sounds like it will be worth it.
Will make note of the sun screen and ponchos wouldn't have even though of something like that if it weren't for nice folks like yourself as a friendly reminder to bring items such as those.

As far as food, we aren't really picky but not too big on seafood, anything else is pretty fair game. Have been on a diet/exercise plan since the beginning of the year and will keep it up until we head out to Cali, so guess I have been preparing for all the treats to consume out there so I am ready for it all haha.

I 2nd checking out HydroGuy's threads for good DL introductions.

Fastpasses: Agree with above poster on DL. Because of when you're going to DCA I recommend planning for Frozen meet (if you're interested in that), RSR & Soarin'. I add Soarin' because it will just have opened off its 5 month upgrade & surrounding area upgrade so there should be renewed interest in the ride & land.

Character dining: fyi Ariels Grotto is princess character dining. Other character dining includes Storytellers (in GCH), Surfs Up (in PP) & Goofy's Kithchen (in DLH). Since you're already doing Minnie & friends I'd research what characters show up to Surfs & Storytellers if princesses aren't your focus. They have more interesting characters than Goofy's these days.

About your early entry: your ticket MM doesn't matter because you're staying onsite. Staying in one of the 3 Disney hotels automatically gives you the Extra Magic Hour each morning before the park opens! The hour switches between DCA & DL (except during super busy days but I don't think you'll hit those). Off the top of my head I don't remember which days are EMH for which parks but check into that for planning purposes. Have fun!!

Hiya! I just made my first trip to Disneyland last summer - after growing up (and working) at WDW for years, and I absolutely fell in love!

Since you will have Park Hoppers, I would advice you to take a look at RideMax for a touring plan. I believe I paid like $10 for a month to use it - you input what day you'll be there, what you'd like the see during that day (and how many times!) and it will give you a minute-by-minute itinerary to go by to accomplish your goals, complete with when to go get FastPasses.

Now, I didn't follow the plan minute-by-minute, but it did help me prioritize what I needed to do during the points of the day I was in either park.

The one thing I would advise that you make a plan AND stick to each day is what nightly spectacular you wish to see (World of Color, Fantasmic, Fireworks, or even the new Paint the Night Parade). To see all of these in the best possible places, you'll need to prioritize which one you want to see and then plan around that. There are FastPasses for WoC and Fantasmic, but you still will have to get to the show area early to stake out a premium spot - even if you go with a dining package, there is still a little wait involved, so plan accordingly for that. If they are all important to you, I would pick one a night and prioritize. There's a chance you could knock out both fireworks and Paint the Night in one night, but don't leave that for last in the event that the weather is not cooperating for fireworks.

Feel free to ask any other questions! There are a lot of us who are happy to answer them or relay our personal experiences and preferences to you!

Cool thank you for your kind response!
Anna and Elsa is a must do for us as we are both Frozen fanatics lol so I will make sure to get the past passes for their meet and greet.
Will look into the other character meals to see who is appearing where and decide which will be the most fun.

Thanks for the info too about Magic Morning as I had no idea staying onsite grants that hour everyday, great to know! :-)

Can't belive I am finally going to DL for the first time ever, theres just so much information it's a lot to handle and take in and I appreciate your kind help in answering my many questions! :-)

Awesome information about the RideMax, didn't even know that existed to make such a minute-by-minute itenarary as I am such a planner that sometimes I think I might be an over-planner haha but I am for sure going to look into that!

I've heard from family members and co-workers that have gone that the evening shows like fireworks and WOC etc are always packed and thought Id ask folks here about the best spots and times to hit these up so again thank you for your help with fast passes and information about these shows too! :-)

With Fantasmic and World of Color, there are FPs anyone can get - but better priority seating areas exist if you do a dining package.

I didn't do a dining package for those, because it was just me - and honestly, I just wanted to get in to see the show. I think "best spot ever!!" is a little overrated when it comes to these big shows! But, again, that's just me.

I know I'm in the minority, but I actually loved DCA more than DL on my trip. Maybe it's because DL felt so tight and packed, with rides that were similar to what I experienced growing up as a WDW kid - whereas DCA felt open, less rushed, less trafficked with so many brand-new things (to me!) to see!

Thanks for the additional info. I think my plethora of questions just comes from the over planner in me coupled with it being my first time and wanting to get everything out of our trip as I don't know when I will be back lol.

I too think that the best spot to everyone is def subjective I just want to make sure I get to see all the shows like WOC have to offer and not get a bum experience from it because of taller people in front of me or just being in the wrong spot to experience the show.

I'll have to see how much a dining package will be and if the wallet will allow it lol

If you don't mind my asking what are your favorite things to do at DL/DCA? What food items do you recommend or are to die for? Suggestions you may have that are like total must dos for first timers like my partner and I?

As always your info and help is MUCH appreciated (though someone else here might not think so) :-)

So putting all of the drama llamas aside, :welcome:! for the days you'll be at PPH, you will get early entry into 1 park on each of those days, including check out day.

There is a very handy sticky thread that explains FP's. It's different than FP+ at WDW. It's the old regular paper FP's.

Re: best location for parades & fireworks, it sort of depends. From the 60th anniversary announcements that occurred last week, it sounds like the fireworks are going to be pretty spectacular and they're going to use projections in multiple locations all over DL. The DIS has a great podcast that came out this week which describes it. I found it very informative & helpful.

World of Color - somebody put a sticky thread up that explains World of Color FP's, when to line up, there's even a map on there that describes where the different FPs' standing areas are. It really is quite thorough of an explanation and is very helpful to a new person.

Stuff that 1st timers should do:
Well, this sort of depends on the person and what types of rides you usually like, but if it was my 1st time to DL, I would want to go on:
  • Peter Pan
  • Dumbo
  • Autopia
  • Storybookland Canal Boats
  • Indiana Jones
  • Finding Nemo submarines
  • Splash Mountain - because there's some stuff in there from Song of the South and I like the music.
  • Space Mountain
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • Radiator Springs Racers
  • Soarin' Over California
Re: Ariel's Grotto - we took our kids there 2 years ago for lunch and it was fine. The food was good, but not the most fabulous meal ever. The princesses were all very nice, but given the large # of tables that they had to go to, we really only had enough time to take a quick photo with each princess and then they moved on. So if you're looking for more lengthy character interaction, Princess Fantasy Faire is a great option to consider as well. We had dinner 1 evening at Goofy's Kitchen and it was great. Goofy had all of us in stitches.

Now also about Photo pass get the Photo pass + not just the normal one. Then you can get the character meals and rides on it.
Normaly I would be searching for answers with the search bar but it is still not up so yes most of the questions could be answered in a sticky, however being new here you may not even know what sticky to look in. So I am glade others besides my self have been helpful to you.

I didn't even know about the Sorrin upgrade lol got add that to my list now.

Storytellers breakfast was a nice one. It may not have near as many characters as the others but it was a nice place to eat.
I haven't had Carthey Circle yet butt want to, they have a fp for woc when you eat there too.
You must try the Monto Cristo at BB or at Cafe Orleans
(Btw sorry for not spelling some of the names right but you know what to look up. Ohh Allears.net has a good list of menus to plan as well.)

We take our own lunch into the parks with us.. and buy dinner there... if you have a car.. there is a target about 5 minutes away on Harbor.. and then just down the road (left at crossroad just before target) and down the road a bit there is a Vons. (Safeway) you can get supplies there..
Have fun

Late the party, but some thoughts...

It's worth noting that May 31 is Bats Day in the Park, so there may be some uptick in crowds due to that unofficial event. I would also except to see somewhat high crowds in the park during the week just because it's the last week before the summer blockout goes into effect for the SoCal Select APs (starts on Jun 5). There will also be grad nights on Jun 2 and 3.

Given that the trip is planned for after May 22nd, it means the park should be operating on the full summer schedule (long operating hours, full entertainment, etc.). It also means high(ish) crowds. So keep that in mind as you plan you trip.

We will have 4-day park hopper passes that we plan to use on the 1st-4th and I believe they should have a magic morning included as well.
I am part of a vacation club and we will be staying 1st-5th at Paradise Pier Hotel.
If you're staying at the Paradise Pier Hotel, you should qualify for EMH (extra magic hour) which occurs in both parks on approximately alternating days. Certain multi-day tickets come with on Magic Morning (MM), which only happens at DL.

Fast passes: what do you all recommend with these? Which should we gun for first, etc?
Over in DCA, the most popular FP is for RSR. Those are lasting longer into the day now, but that would probably be my first priority. Although, if you take advantage of EMH, you might be able to ride RSR with the FP during EMH. The other DCA FPs are more likely to last longer into the day, so it's a matter of which rides you want to do the most. Over in DL, I would probably aim for either a Space or Indy FP because those are two popular rides that can have long lines. I would also get a FP for F! or WoC, depending on which you are planning on seeing on a given day.

Anna & Elsa: I know they have now been moved over to California Adventure, do they too still have a fast past available since they have been moved?
They are still issuing return tickets for them. The most recent reports indicate that these are not connected to the rest of the DCA FP system.

What are the things that you all recommend as must-dos for 2 first-timers?
I would go through the list of attractions and shows and prioritize which ones you want to see/do the most. Once you've identified which ones you want to do the most, folks can give you tips/pointers about suggested schedules.

I know there will be changes occurring with the 60th Anniversary Celebration coming up, so what are recommendations for best spots/locations to be in when shows like the fireworks, World of Color, and the night parade happen to get the best view of these shows?
At this point, to much is in flux to really say what any ideal viewing locations will be. WoC and the WoC viewing are are undergoing a major refurbishment right now (through mid-March) so it's not known at this point what will mean in terms of viewing areas. I'd come back and ask about WoC sometime in mid-April after folks have a chance to check out the new area.

In terms of fireworks, I think the areas that were popular before will still be good spots (Main Street, Small World Mall), but given the major upgrades and changes to the system, it sounds like there might be more areas now. Unfortunately, this isn't something that will really be known until the fireworks show debuts in late-May.

In terms of the parade viewing, that is probably the least likely to change with the new parade. Pretty much anywhere along the route offers a good view. I generally like to watch from Small World Mall or Main Street, but as long as you aren't on the inside of the bend, the view is usually pretty good.

In my vacation club package that I booked I have a character breakfast included which I believe is the Minnie and Friends one, but also wanted to book Ariel's Grotto, do you think that is a nice one to book as well?
Do you like princesses? I've read mostly mixed reviews about the food, but it's a good chance to meet princesses. You can also meet many of the same princesses at Fantasy Faire in DL.

Yes, it is recommended that you pre-purchase PP+ because of the discount. If you buy it at least 14-days before your trip it costs $70, but if you buy it at the parks, it costs $100. Once you've ordered it, they will mail you a DVD and voucher (as in snail mail). You'll take the voucher with you to the parks (you don't need anything else that comes in the package, just the paper voucher) and exchange it for the lanyard. Take a picture of the lanyard's account number, because if you lose the lanyard, you'll need that number to get a new one and to claim your photos. Once you have the lanyard, it functions just like a PP card. You can hand it to the PP photographers so they can link the photos to your account. You can also add attraction photos and dining package photos to your account.

I have a bunch of questions and understand there are probably mass sticky threads that can answer all if not most of my questions but I always like to ask members of a forum personally instead of reading a number of threads all over, but that's just me....also many things may have changed since those sticky threads were made and I want most recent experiences to help me out.
No to stir up the pot, but I can see where this will rub some folks the wrong way. The authors of the sticky threads put in a lot of time and effort to make sure they're up-to-date and useful. I would highly recommend taking a look at the * DLR Info/Links - Maps, Hotels, DISer Reviews, Hydroguy's tips, NEWBIE INFO here! sticky thread because it links to a lot of really use information threads that will probably be helpful in planning a trip.

I am just going to give you my advice off the top of my head..for what it is worth..

For your Sunday night stay offsite I would reccomend Best Western Stovalls. It is a nice clean hotel and very close to the parks.
http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwes...ll's-Inn/Hotel-Overview.do?propertyCode=05185

We have done the Minnie and Friends Breakfast on our annual trip the last 4 years and have loved it EVERY time. You will not be disappointed! You can get a reservation before the park opens...I love doing this because you get to walk down an EMPTY main street before all the crowds! I also liked Goofy's Kitchen.

I can't believe that no one has suggested a Dole Whip yet for first timers!! It is a great treat located outside the Tiki Room in Disneyland. It is hands down my favorite treat at DLR. A must get for me!

There are no fast passes for Toy Story MM at California Adventure...so I would do that ride first on one of my early entry days to DCA. The line gets long during the day...especially during peak times. I would also ride the Tower of Terror at night. Such a cool ride anytime...but especially at night. The same goes for riding the tea cups at night at the DLR...so magical when they are all lit up.

Definitely try to get a good vewing spot for World of Color. It is a must see in my opinion. I have seen it many many times and still get teary eyed. It is worth the wait for a good viewing spot.

Most of all...have fun on your trip! 4 days is plenty of time to see a lot of magical things and not feel too rushed. Enjoy!!

If you don't mind my asking what are your favorite things to do at DL/DCA? What food items do you recommend or are to die for? Suggestions you may have that are like total must dos for first timers like my partner and I?

As always your info and help is MUCH appreciated (though someone else here might not think so) :-)

Hmmm ... lemme think.

1. Dole Whip. A Dole Whip is a MUST. I'm pretty sure I ate at least six or eight of them during my two-day visit over the summer.
2. You have four days, so I would probably spend the first part of your first two days just exploring the parks - walking around, taking it all in, jumping on rides that interest you and then you can spend the final two days of your trip circling back to things you missed OR things you want to ride again!
3. Personally, if I had four days, I would seriously spend the better part of one day just riding RSR over and over and over again. :D
4. My favorite rides: RSR, Soarin', Tower of Terror, California Screamin', Indiana Jones, all the Mountains and Toy Story. But I also enjoyed riding some of the WDW dark rides - Peter Pan, Mr. Toad, Snow White - for nostalgia's sake.
5. If you like Broadway-style shows, then "Aladdin" will probably be a must. I didn't see it during my trip, but that was only because I'd recently seen the Broadway production in NYC and a friend told me that many of the elements from the DLR show were what inspired and structured the Broadway show! It's definitely on my must-do for my Half Marathon trip though!

Also - when I was planning my first trip, the best thing I did was join the "Check-In" thread for the month of my trip! It was a great place to bounce touring ideas off of people, and then get pretty immediate responses on park situations from people who just got back before my trip. So, I would definitely do that if I were you!

I completely agree!! I read those threads multiple times when I first was planning my trip! Though, because they are SO thorough, I think they can be overwhelming at times to people just starting out. Luckily, there are plenty of people who are happy to answer questions!

So putting all of the drama llamas aside, :welcome:! for the days you'll be at PPH, you will get early entry into 1 park on each of those days, including check out day.

Thank you so much for the information, I appreciate it. I know we will most def. stop by the Princess Fantasy Faire, but just thought on the off chance that one of the princesses isn't in the Fantasy Faire that they may appear over at Ariel's Grotto as a chance to see ALL princesses possible. :-)

We take our own lunch into the parks with us.. and buy dinner there... if you have a car.. there is a target about 5 minutes away on Harbor.. and then just down the road (left at crossroad just before target) and down the road a bit there is a Vons. (Safeway) you can get supplies there..
Have fun

Thanks for the info, had no idea that you can take lunches into the park to eat. We will have a car so a trip to Target or Vons might just be in order to save a little cash and only have one meal on the parks each day. Thanks again!

If you're staying at the Paradise Pier Hotel, you should qualify for EMH (extra magic hour) which occurs in both parks on approximately alternating days. Certain multi-day tickets come with on Magic Morning (MM), which only happens at DL.

They are still issuing return tickets for them. The most recent reports indicate that these are not connected to the rest of the DCA FP system.

I would go through the list of attractions and shows and prioritize which ones you want to see/do the most. Once you've identified which ones you want to do the most, folks can give you tips/pointers about suggested schedules.

Do you like princesses? I've read mostly mixed reviews about the food, but it's a good chance to meet princesses. You can also meet many of the same princesses at Fantasy Faire in DL.

Wow thank you so much for taking the time to answer each of my questions, I appreciate it.
Also thank you for taking a mature and professional approach to where you think my original post might have offended someone instead of just being a jerk about it and not be helpful at all.
I do think because there ARE many sticky threads I avoided them as I had no idea where to start and where to find each of my answers without the search function working properly but now that it is back up I think it will be easier. :-)

I am just going to give you my advice off the top of my head..for what it is worth..

For your Sunday night stay offsite I would reccomend Best Western Stovalls. It is a nice clean hotel and very close to the parks.

Enjoy!!

Thank you for the info!
Thank you for the suggestion of an off site hotel, I will def look into that hotel for our one night offsite stay.

Will also try a Dole Whip, sounds interesting as it is! Hehe

I'm excited for the Minnie and Friends Breakfast, I saw a few youtube videos of guests' experiences at that breakfast and it looks crazy fun, I can't wait! :-)

Hmmm ... lemme think.

I completely agree!! I read those threads multiple times when I first was planning my trip! Though, because they are SO thorough, I think they can be overwhelming at times to people just starting out. Luckily, there are plenty of people who are happy to answer questions!

Uh-oh a second suggestion for a Dole Whip....thinking it WILL be a MUST for us hehe!
As I said I'm a planner so that's why I'm like already freaking out to make sure I make the most of the trip, but you are most def right to explore the parks first to get a feel for them and then circle back around having a little experience with the parks to utilize the last 2 days to the best of our ability.
I'm excited but nervous at the same time to try the Tower of Terror, I'm not much of an adventurous ride type person but I do want to say I experience the Tower of Terror, and say hey look! I did it! LOL
Aladdin is probably in the top 3 of my all time favorite Disney movies, and I LOVE musicals/Broadway so that show sounds like a MUST DO for us! Any link or site for additional information I can find out about that show?

You are right, I think I had no idea where to even look for answers to my questions with there being so many stickies and informational posts that I thought it would be a little easier to ask personal opinions and then maybe some kind souls like yourself and all others who posted in my thread (except for one) would be able to guide me to the right areas.

Thanks again for all your info and suggestions, much appreciated! :-)
