I am in the process of setting up my new 1TB drive. My old 500GB drive is now becoming my picture drive. The reason I am sharing this is because I am still in shock that I even need a Terabyte of space! :scared1: My first pc had a 500MB drive that I compressed to 1GB. I remember thinking then that I could never fill 1GB. :rotfl2: Oh how the times have changed.

Ain't that the truth! I just replaced my 320GB external with a 1TB; it is exclusively dedicated to photo storage. Those 12MP RAW files chew up hard drive space in a hurry!

And what is amazing is what it costs. I recently got a 1tb hitachi drive with three year warranty for $80! Amazing

I haven't stepped up to a 1tb yet but I do have four drives in my main PC... 160, 500, 640, and 750. Yet I still battle for space sometimes - your files are like goldfish, they'll expand to fill any amount of storage! I do have my RAWs duplicated on two of my drives, so there's a lot of space there, too... actually, some only exist on duplicate DVD backups, so I've been slowly putting them back on (after I got the 750g drive.)

I'm kind of amazed at the space of my backups, too. I'm using Mozy and after several months, I've got 280 gigs stored with them now, with all my newer raw files and I've slowly been adding my older ones. I only wish I had a faster upload speed...

My first PC was an Osborne. I wrote code on punch cards and I have stored data on cassette tapes. Times have changed. And yes, my 500mb drive is getting full and I need minimally 1tb. Unreal.

Well, our family's first pc had no fixed drive, but was nice and had two floppy drives! :worship: That way, you didn't have to pull out the DOS disk to load your program.

I will never forget our first computer. It had an Cyrix 888 chip in it. It had a CGA color monitor so we would see DOS in color! We paid extra for 640k of ram. The salesman told me proudly that he doubted we could ever fill the hard drive because it had 30mb of space on it! When we upgraded the ram again it was $10 per mb and the most the computer could hold was like 6 or 8mb! The computer cost right at $2000. Our first 24 pin printer, we got on sale at almost $650. I think we still have some of that perforated paper around here somewhere.

I am feeling old!

I still remember the quote from my roommate when I bought my first PC. He said "Get the 20 meg drive. Then you'll have all the space you'll ever need."

I'm a space fiend. A lot of it is video. We rip all of our videos and store them on a NAS. We also keep audio books, music, game images and ROMS and other media there. That eats up a lot of space. The NAS currently has four 1TB drives in a RAID 5 array, but it's being upgraded this week to 1.5TB drives. The 1TB drives will replace the 750meg drives in our other NAS, which gets used as online storage for RAW photo and video files.

I recently (in the past two years) upgraded my home PC hard drive to 80 Gig and thought that would be PLENTY. Then I quickly saw that the space started evaporating. So then last Thanksgiving Office Depot had a special; one TB for just under $100!! So we bought one. Who knows, if they have it again this year we might get another just to back up the other one.

I'm in need as well. The lowest price I've seen is around $99. I think I'll hold out till Black Friday.

Mine is a Samsung Story 1GB for $89 with free shipping from Newegg. I ordered about a week ago, so the deal is probably different now. I went with this one b/c it has a better than average warranty.

Our first PC had a 2G hard drive. I remember someone at work saying you should never be able to fill that up.

Our PC now has 75G but I had to get a 1T drive to move my sons itunes library and my pictures off of the main hard drive. We have 25G on itunes and 40G in picture so the 75G won't work. I know the pictures will only get more and more.

I also have a 500G backup drive for my picture that is in our fireproof safe. I have seen the adds for mozy but I wasn't sure how long it would take to back everything up. We have a DSL line but it is much slower than what I have at work. I was worried it would take days to back up all the stuff on the external drive.

tiger direct, and ecost.com always have good deals on 1tb drives

I was filling external drives too quickly so I switched to a dock and internal drives..

I took my laptop, my dock and 2 1TB to Florida for back up of my photos..

I plan on getting a fireproof, waterproof safe to store the drives in

If you're looking for deals, also keep an eye on the cashback places like Bing (aka Microsoft) and FatWallet. Last week, ZipZoomFly (a reputable competitor to NewEgg) had 20% cashback at Bing! That is some pretty serious savings. They usually have something like 4% or so back at NewEgg...
