So I'll be a first timer going to DL.
I'm hoping you seasoned DL vets might be able to help me out here..

Going around the holidays is really a bad idea if you aren't a crowds person, right?

We're looking at either the 1st two weeks in December or the 2nd week in January.

From what I've read over and over is avoid around Christmas time and 1st week after January. Is that pretty much spot on?

Pretty much spot on... if you want festive though, I'd go in early December... I think the holiday stuff will be down after the 6th of January... most schools are back in session around the 7th of January this year (I understand some have a couple extra days that week off)... and then of course MLK weekend is a long weekend and will be busier (not insane probably but busier.)

Be careful with seocnd week of January. You may miss the crowds but miss a lot of other things as well.

Our trip is the second week in January. January is our very favorite time to visit DL, but be aware that there will be many attractions and shows closed. For us, the low crowds are worth the trade off.

Definitely read the link above about traveling in the off season.

We love January too. Hate crowds. Limited hours can be a bummer but we also get plenty of sleep. We just don't take hotel breaks. We also aren't show or parade people. I would LOVE to see them, but I refuse to wait 2 hours for one. I might do it if it was a guarantee that we would enjoy ourselves, but when kids were smaller we staked out a parade spot only to have a family push us out of the way at the last minute. I don't want to feel angry or get into an argument with someone on vacation, so I just skip them. If this is a once in a lifetime trip, I would def pick December over January. The holidays are just beautiful.
