1st time to buy-Disney or resale?

We just recently took the plunge and signed the contract for SSR on 02/17/11. We are waiting for ROFR. We paid $66 a point and wanted to know if that was a fair price for a 150 point contract? I see so many contracts on these boards that are going for less I am not sure if we should have waited until after 03/20 to purchase! Let me know what you think? It includes all of 2010 points and 2011 points.

SSR contracts are selling high 50's to high 60's pp so I think you are right there in the middle! We purchased SSR last year for 69.00 pp and I am very happy with the purchase, we are now adding on 130 points at 59.00 pp. You got your contract for 33.00pp LESS then if you bought direct and just think you saved almost 5000.00!!! And you will get all direct benefits to boot if ever needed.

Bit of a moot point now, don't you think? lol If you got points, will use them, are excited about owning at DVC, and are already planning a trip, I'd say it was a bargain in those terms alone.

We just bought direct from DIsney 2 contracts of 75 points at BCV. Yes they were pricy but I was able to find my UY (September) and small contracts and pay no closing costs or MFs AND get the points right away without worrying about ROFR. I am very glad we pulled the trigger and our guide is awesome and helped us with some complex membership issues.

I think it's great that you found exactly what you wanted by buying direct. We wanted to buy BCV direct in 2005/2006. I found a guide and she put us on the waitlist for any BCV points. I think the price back then was $92 per point plus points from the current UY without any current MFs and with no closing costs. Plus, they allowed the use of credit cards.

I think over a month went by and I heard nothing from the guide and there apparently wasn't anything for us. So I found a resale contract and signed, and then magically the points we wanted appeared. By then, I felt already committed to the resale contract, but I was really miserable about it because it would have actually been the same price, if not cheaper, to have bought from Disney direct, since we would have gotten the extra points plus used a credit card and gotten airline miles that way. It took up to three months to close the deal and get the points into a new account, so I was not a really happy camper during the whole process. By the time the points hit the account, I had to waitlist for our home resort and ended up with a split stay that year.

It worked out in the end, but if I had to do it over again, I would have waited a while longer for Disney direct.

Nowadays, the price discrepancy between direct and resale for a large amount of points is significant, but for a smaller contract like Katherine's, it makes sense to buy direct because it is really hard to find small contracts, and the closing costs add quite a bit of $$ per point to the price. If the small contract is stripped, in buying direct you have the current year's points, and you get the points right away without ROFR. ROFR seems like forever when you are waiting...

Thanks! I agree -- small contracts are hard to find and the closing costs can add significant $$$ to expenses. I am very happy with my Beach Clubs...
