I am about to book my first trip to ssr tomarrow. I think that we can request where we want our room to be. Do we do this when we call for the initial reservation or will that happen a little closer to check in? If we do make our request at the time of reservation, can any one suggest a building and the benifits of staying in that area.

You can ask for a specific building, but they will say they can't guarantee it. I requested Congress Park, and that is exactly where we stayed. I just called to confirm the week before and they said to mention it at check-in to remind the CM's. Now, there are two main areas that I would recommend staying in. One is Congress Park. The major perk to staying there is the path to walk to DTD is right behind the buildings. You can walk the path (roughly five minutes to the DTD gates) or you can hop on the bus. You also have a great view of DTD and Pleasure Island being right on the lagoon. The perks of The Springs is that it is centrally located across from the main pool area, the Turf Club restaurant, the food court, and the gift shop. If you have small children, you may want to stay there mostly for easy access to the main pool. Either way, enjoy!

I agree Congress Park has been our favorite place to stay. It's actually seems closer to walk to DTD than the Artist's Palette/Gift Shop at SSR. We used the Dining Plan and made a quick walk to Wolfgang Puck Express and Earl of Sandwich for some of our counter service meals. It's also the middle bus stop. The only advantage to the Carousel area that I can see is getting first shot at the buses during busy times. That's not really much of a perk in my opinion since we've never had trouble with buses. The Springs isn't bad, either. We enjoyed our stay there. But, we spent more time at the pool during our stay there than we did on other trips. I took the tip of calling versus reserving online. We have always asked during our phone conversation for various things... away from elevator, specific location, adjoining room to friends, etc. They have taken note and told us to call a week out. Then, we reminded the front desk when we checked in.

We stayed at the Springs our first stay because all rooms with a DTD view were full. I found it to be very convenient with where it was on the bus line and its proximity to get food and everything (we didn't use the pool at all because it was November although others did). I could see requesting either one although we don't use DTD much because we have a 5 year old.
