I have been reading about things to do with your kids (especially their first time at Disney) and saw something about getting a haircut at the Barbershop in MK. I read that it is $14 (plus tip) and if it is your child's first haircut they will give them a set of Mickey ears also. Is this true? Are they real ears, or like paper cut outs?

Anyone done this before? When and how did it work out?

Also, I saw something about paying $5 for a color streak and then they will also put "pixie dust" (confetti) and hairspray in older children's hair. I have a 3 y/o DD who would be there also. She may like this?!

How busy is this place? Do I have to plan to get there early? or can I just stop by anytime?

Thanks in advance!

1- Yes, thereabouts.
2- Busy. Arrive at Rope Drop, or take your chances at other times of day.

I highly, highly, highly recommend this!!! We did it for our youngest son last October when he was just 10 months old (he had a TON of hair). They covered him in Mickey stickers to distract him and did a really nice job with his haircut. They saved the hair for me in tissue paper sealed with a Mickey sticker, gave us a "First Haircut" certificate, and gave him "real" Mickey ears with "First Haircut" embroidered on the back. TOO CUTE!!! And totally worth it.

As an aside, we also had our older 2 boys' hair painted at the same visit. They really liked it, but I'm not sure we'd do it again. The paint got on our stroller and hasn't come off, and it was absolutely TORTURE to try to get it out of their hair in the shower. There was much screaming as we washed their hair 4 or 5 times to try to get it all out.

Have fun!

Did it 2 weeks ago. Went right at rope drop before the door was open. There is only 2 chairs and its first come first serve. Like others have said, the cms are very experienced at distraction. My little one had no idea he was losing hair. He was totally focused on the buzz light year toy he was given. Later in the week, my friend had to get a beard trim and the cm even trimmed his eyebrows, covered him with pixie dust and sent him on his way. It's a fun place. I highly recommend it. It can get busy, pre or post-parade is a good time if you're not first.

The highlight of our trip. :goodvibes

Both my son and daughter got their first haircuts. They wore the ears the entire trip (saved me from buying any hats for both of them). They are the plain black ears and "First Haircut" is embroidered on the back.

Couldn't believe he sat still for the whole thing!

Here's the color/confetti. It's free with a haircut... $7.50 without (older DD also got hers done.)

Our son had his first and second haircut there. For the first haircut they did all the stuff mentioned by others: certificate, Mickey ears hat embroidered with "My First Haircut), hair clippings with "Mickey dust" (Mickey head-shaped confetti) wrapped in tissue sealed with a Mickey sticker. The barbers are polite and pleasant. They're also experienced at keeping kids distracted/occupied and working fast so most kids don't get a chance to get too antsy. One of their tricks is handing young children a Buzz Lightyear or Sorcerer Mickey toy that lights and spins (the toy is sold around the park). Another trick for toddlers is putting cheap Mickey stickers all over the child's arms, legs and clothing...the kids get distracted pulling them off and putting them back on. So simple, yet effective. If it's your child's first haircut don't forget to get a picture with the barber (they have male and female barbers). I recommend NOT getting the colored gel. I've heard from lots of people on this boards that it's incredibly difficult to get it out, even after repeated washings (especially with blond hair).

Don't get discouraged if you see a short line outside the door. The shop is tiny and there's not any waiting area inside worth mentioning (actually, there are a couple of chairs), so there's nowhere for a line to go but outside. There are usually two or three barbers working, and they're pretty speedy. If you see a line, take a closer look; it might not be as bad as you originally thought. Some of the people in line, such as parents and older siblings, are often not getting a cut for themselves, but they nevertheless take up space, make the line appear longer than it should be. On the other hand, you do get families where several members, including dad, is getting a cut, and that can drag on for a while. Again, take a closer look.

We had our son's first haircut done there too. As mentioned, real ears, hair with pixie dust, certificate, etc.

We also had his 3rd haircut done in December -- along with my DH and my dad at the same time! I'm sure the people behind us weren't impressed! :rotfl:

We will probably try to plan haircuts around Disney trips as long as he'll let us, since it's a fun experience.

The barbershop is right on the mains square, next to the firehouse, which is kind of right next to the bathrooms and guest services area (Not the side of the square where Tony's is located). If you know where the parade comes out, it's right next to those doors too. There is a barber ploe outside. It is kind of out of the way and easy to miss if you are not looking for it.

The kid's 1st haircut is $17, for other kids it's $14. For $14, you get the haircut and glitter/pony tail and gel if you want it. It's not the super most elaborate haircut ever, but for that price, you can't beat it. I think just teh ponytail with glitter is only $7.

for a girl's 1st haircut, they may or may not have a pink version of the ears.

If you want more ears, the ear shop is almost directly across teh square - behind teh confectionary shop.

One more tip, if the line looks long, don't be afraid to come back a little later. The line does vary. Yes, it's a bit of a hike from Toontown, but it's not hard to get there otherwise.

Is the barbershop on the map? For some reason I can't find it.

If the circle at the start of Main Street (the one that goes around the flag pole, not the one around the "Partners" statue) were a clock, the barber shop would be located at roughly the 10 or 11 o'clock position. If you are facing and standing right in front of and City Hall (Guest Relations) or the Fire Station, it's 90 degrees to your right. It's tucked away in the corner, immediately to the right of the gate where the parade route starts/ends.

As you come out from the tunnel going under the MK RR, it is on your left on the main hub there - before you go up Main Street. It is kind of tucked in the corner but there is the traditional barber shop pole in front of the shop.

By the way, I recommend this for adults and children alike. My DH had his haircut last time along with all three kids and it was terrific. We were there during the flower and garden festival and the barbers went to town with gel on DH's head. He had a veritable flower garden on the back of his head!! We got questions and comments all day long! Some real Disney magic is in that shop!

Good luck and enjoy!

We got DS first haircut done there on his first birthday. Here is the line we stood in.

It took us about 45 minutes to an hour. We waited until later in the afternoon to do this. I read on the dis that around parade time is a good time to go. Well on this particular day it was not, but we waited in line anyway. I think it is hit our miss. Even the workers in the in shop said it was an unusually long line.

The wait was long and hot. There are a couple seat inside, but this day it was out the door, so I stood in line and DH had DS in the stroller napping in the shade. The sun was beating down on me and there was no breeze. DS woke up about 5 minutes before his turn so it worked out perfectly!

I would also like to add we had Micheal! He is wonderful with little ones! He took his time and I don't think DS even knew someone was cutting his hair. Micheal collect all the hair clippings and when he was finished he added some pixiedust and wrapped them up for us to keep.

Here's the back of the ears.

One important thing to remeber at the MK Barber Shop. When they removed the old antique cash register and put in a terminal to allow use of credit cards and hotel charges and the like they hooked into The Emporium's network. The register, unlike ones in table service restaurants, cannot handle tips as part of the transaction.

So if you are planning on using the Harmony Barber Shop please be aware that if you are using any sort of card you cannot add a tip on the card and should have cash available for tipping.

Thanks for all your replies everyone! I really appreciate it!

Our only issue is that we only have one day in MK, so I am trying to have as little amount of "waste" time as possible. I don't think DH will be thrilled about it being our first stop of the day either.

Maybe I will just chance it and check out the line throughout the day. :confused3

We did it for our DD. She was 14 months at the time.

We were also lucky enough to have the barbershop quartet come in and sing right before she got her haircut. We were lucky enough to get the pink hat.

Also pretty cheap for a hair cut by any standards.

We do this every time we go. Myself and my boys get it done. We all get a Mickey head on the backs of our heads. Sure, it's a pain to get out, but who cares? You get lots of great comments walking around the park.

And Michael is the best!

I'm thinking of getting my DD14 months 1dt haircut next month at the Barbershop. She really doesn't need a lot cut not do I want a lot cut. I'm not even sure what I want to do with her hair as far as bangs vs no bangs.

Are the stylists there pretty good with girl's hair too or do they mostly work with shorter boys cuts?
