1st DVC Reservation

I am getting ready to make our very first DVC reservation for next July. I'm planning to make my ressie at my home resort at exactly the 11 month mark which would be in August. However, we prefer to go the end of July next year, but we could go any time during the second half of July (15th and on). So, my question is this: would you go ahead and call on Aug. 15th to try to get a reservation or would you wait until later in the month to try to get something more towards the end of July since that is the time frame we prefer? I just don't want to wait so late that I can't get the reservations with the accommodations I want, but I didn't know how to go about making our reservation since we actually could travel any time during the last two weeks of July but prefer the end. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Is it okay to make a reservation beginning somewhere around the 15th and then call back a week later to see if you can change your dates? Thanks!

If you are looking for something that is difficult to book, then I might call on the 15th, book it, and then a week later, call and see if it is still available and move the trip to the time closer to what you prefer.

Most reservations, however, are not that difficult at the 11 month window, especially at the end of July.

Thanks, Sandi! I always appreciate your advice with all things DVC! I'm guessing it's no problem to call a week later and just move the reservation if there is availability?

Please keep in mind how it works, they don't "move" a reservation. They will cancel the first reservation and then book the second reservation. I'm not saying the following scenario will be a problem for you at the time you are vacationing, just something to keep in mind for the future.......If there is little availability for the resort you are reserving at, there is a possibility that while they are cancelling the first reservation for you and then go in to book the next reservation the room is taken by someone else. Now you would need to decide whether you want to book at a different resort and put yourself on the waitlist for your first choice.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. You can check availability before canceling though, right? I understand what you mean about the possibility of someone else grabbing the reservation I think I might be getting. Does that happen very often? Thanks again!

Yes, and with the new system that they are using, they have the ability to put the room you want on hold while they cancel out the first. When I wanted to change my first two nights from a 2 bedroom SV at BLT to the 2 bedroom BW view for my August trip, I asked them about the chances of losing both. I was told that she put the new room on hold and there were no issues.

In your case, since you are booking at the 11 month mark, as long as you call to shift the days prior to the check out day, you will not have any problem getting the new dates.
