1st birthday at Disney

My son will be turning 1 during our trip to WDW in November. Has anyone been at Disney for their child's first birthday? I want to do a smash cake but not sure if Disney does that or should I just go to the grocery store there for a cake? Not sure if we will do something special for dinner or not. Give me some ideas!

Hi! My son turned one 3 weeks before our trip last year, but we celebrated his birthday anyway!! We went to Ohana at Poly, which was wonderful and had noted on our reservation that it was his birthday. At the end of our meal, our waitress brought out a special cupcake for him with a candle. When we took his picture with the cupcake, she held two bread plates behind his head so he looked like he had mouse ears - the picture is adorable and I bought a special frame for it in the Poly gift shop. My son would not touch the cupcake (nor did he eat a bite of his real birthday cake!) so we didn't order a special cake for him. I know you can order special cakes in advance and I believe most of the restaurants have small cakes in stock for special occasions that you can order when you get there (There used to be a cake thread in the restaurant forum and hopefully someone who has ordered a cake can give you some more info) I think you can't go wrong at any of the restaurants and the cast members seem more than happy to help celebrate the special occasion. We didn't spend any extra money and they really created a very special moment for us. We also noted his birthday on our resort reservation and found balloons and a birthday card signed by Pluto in our room waiting for us when we arrived. I would say just make sure you have his birthday noted on all of your reservations and I imagine something special will happen!! Have a wonderful time! My son's first birthday trip was very special for us and we are looking forward to his second birthday trip in October!

you can order a small cake in a pirate treasure chest or a regular round cake (small, but not as small) to have at one of your dinners (48hr notice required though). I found it on the Disney Website because we are celebrating a 2nd birthday.

We have celebrated my sons birthday there each year. For the first birthday I would try and keep it simple. Maybe even a birthday lunch since it will be cheaper with just as good of opitions. The Crystal Palace in MK is great for the little ones. Pooh and all his friends are there. They do a birthday dance and all the birthday goers get mickey ears, and fun stuff at the table. Just make sure when you make the reservations you let them know. They will also have all the charaters sign a card for your child. A cute keepsake.
Another fun place is Chef Mickeys-even for Breakfast. What better way to celebrate a little ones birthday then in the AM when they are usually the most alert and happy. They have a fun dance and great interacting with the kids too.

Sounds like we got jipped (LOL) for my 3yr olds birthday then. We were there at CP for lunch and we had told them when we did the ADR that it was his birthday, and at check in...he got NOTHING. Oh well, life goes on.

If you havent done it already, dont forget the "first haircut" at the main street babrber. What a wonderful thing to tell about your first haircut. It will most likely always be there whenever you go back to Disney years and years from now. You can always know...thats the "place"!
