Has anyone ever read this book? I'm reading it right now, it's one of the best "classics" I've read. Can anybody suggest any books that have (a) theme(s) close to this?

I read this book many years ago....I thought it was fascinating then. I cannot think of other books like it, maybe do a search by author and see if he wrote anything else.. I know he wrote Animal Farm, or maybe check Amazon for books similar to 1984..

I am teaching 1984 in my senior honors classes right now! I would agree with Towncrier that Brave New World is a good similar book. Animal Farm is much easier than 1984, but you have to read beyond the cute, talking animals and remember they are talking about Lenin and Stalin.
btw if you are considering seeing the 1984 movie with John Hurt, DON'T! It's awful.

I absolutely HATED Animal Farm, we read it in 7th Grade with all the symbolism and stuff...eh...not my thing ;) Yeah, I love the book. Thanks for the suggestions, Towncrier!

Brave New World--very similiar

Clockwork Orange- is an odd scifi connection as well.

You could try Anthem and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.

I remember reading Atlas Shrugged and not liking it.

I enjoy 1984, but think Brave new World is better ! Also, I think "A handmaiden's Tale" by Margaret Atwwood is in somewhat similar vein.......plus as a bonus you can read it to celebrate "Read a banned book week" since it has been challenged many times !

I liked Brave New World in the begining and then felt like it trailed off at the end. I actually read 1984 my junior year in high school and then had to read it again in college for my politics class. We had to read a book called Ecotopia, which is basically the exact opposite of 1984 and compare the two.

I love that book!! Um, Animal Farm was written by the same author. I've not read it, but I'm going to.

I loved a Handmaid's Tale.. I think they made a movie with Natasha Richardson in the lead role....if my memory serves me correctly. Great book and good weird movie.
