......................

Any chance you were working out not long before your appointment? That can cause you to show things in your urine that wouldn't normally show up.

The choices were the IVP with contrast - or an abdominal urography with contrast - both of which require pre-approval and carry the $100 co-pay..

And some risk, even though minimal. Wait a week and retest.

I've had it most of my life-benign idiopathic hematuria. One urologist I went to wanted to do a kidney biopsy right out of the gate. I declined and went to another urologist who did a complete renal work-up. I've always been told to be on the look-out for gross (visible) blood, then see what is going on. I'd wait a week. Good luck to you.

wow, the doc jumped to an expensive test for just a trace?? .. and no other abnormal lab tests, asymptomatic, etc??

I would wait a week and retest.

If it was a larger amount, had abnormals on blood tests, any symptoms .. then I would certainly jump to a more invasive test right away.

Whether to wait or not depends on your other health issues, if any.

If I had a history of any sort of kidney or bladder problems (urinary system problems, if you will), then I'd probably have the test. If I had a history of cancer, I'd probably have the test. Did the MD draw any blood work to check your kidney function? If not, that's another avenue to take.

If I had never had any urinary system problems, I'd probably wait a couple of weeks and retest and then go from there.

FWIW, with regard to the urinary system, there's not a lot the MD can do between "urine sample" and "invasive test". It's not like some of the other body systems where one can do "lower level" testing before getting out the "big guns"...i.e.-with the respiratory system, a chest x-ray can be done prior to doing an MRI.

You might also want to see if your MD would consider giving you an antibiotic. You may have a very low-grade infection that is causing irritation and sloughing of red blood cells. I'd recommend you increase your intake of cranberry juice as well, make your urine a bit more acidic. As a matter-of-fact, if it is not medically contraindicated for toher reasons, up your fluid intake over all for the next couple of weeks.

Every urine test I can ever remember having has come back with a trace of blood. I've had the "get knock out and fish up there with a tube" test done, I'm fine.

Several docs have told me that its not uncommon to have a "trace" of blood in a urine test, especially if its not a clean catch test. And if it was cultured and didn't grow anything I wouldn't worry at all.

My completely non-qualified advise: wait a few weeks and get retested with a clean catch test.

Are you having any symptoms?

That's the way I was leaning - waiting and retesting.. Was just curious what others might say..;)

Hi C.Ann!

My MIL just had this happen to her. It was a trace. They did a Culture and a Uranalysis. Two weeks later she had an appointment with a Urologist. He examined her and did another 'dipstick', the results were normal and he said it was extremely common to have that happen.

He told her to come back in 6 months and if it was again a normal stick she did not have to return to him again. He said that two abnormal sticks would necessitate further testing.

I have to agree with the way you are thinking and would myself wait until I re-tested and based on those results consider the more invasive test.

If it makes any difference, I'm past menopause, so "that" wouldn't be a contributing factor..;)

Same for me and I had a trace of blood show in my urine test. Doctor asked me to come back in a week and re-test. This time no blood. She said that when there is a "trace" of anything showing they always retest.....best of luck on what ever decision you make.

I had that one time. The doctor had me come back for a "clean catch" and it was fine.

I am not a physician, and you may very well be, so please excuse the following statement if you are...:goodvibes

Repeating the abnormal, inexpensive, uninvasive test is something a physician could do before performing more invasive, expensive tests, right?

In my lifetime as a lab person (medical technologist), this is very common. Unless the abnormal result was life threatening or having other lab values that go along with the abnormal one.
