Does anyone know what the pins were like in the 70s? My first trip to WDW was around 1974 and I have some plastic pins. I think they were purchased on our trip.

I'll respond because no one else did...

I don't have a lot of expertise on pins because I have never been a real collector. The plastic pins you mention began at WDW one year after the park opened with a cast member anniversary pin every year for the first twelve years. I'm not aware of any that were sold to guests, but maybe there were some.

Colorful pin back buttons were the big thing in the early years. The cast member birthday plastic pins were replaced by pin backs for the 14th WDW birthday.

The first cloisonnne pins that I can recall at WDW was about 1984, after the LA Olympics brought pin trading to the public.

Hope this helps a little...

I just traded with someone today at the pin station in Epcot. He brought some of his collection and we were talking for a while and I was browsing through his Donald Ducks. He traded me a button made in England in the 70's for one of mine because he said I was so nice to him and because he had one already and tries not to have replicas. I will post a picture once my wife uploads photos from our trip, so prolly in about a week.

The Tomart guide has pics and some info on the first pins:
