18 y/o's using DVC???

My dd is thinking of a graduation trip to WDW in 2012, with two friends. She will be over 18 by then (how the heck did that happen???), as will the other two girls. I won't be traveling with them, but will be reserving them a studio at our home resort, BWV. Is there anything different or special that needs to be done with under 21's registering??? Want them to be prepared for all eventualities. I'm thinking no charging to the room is a good idea!!!

As long as one is 18 or older, you will be fine. They probably will do better without room charging since they can then all be responsible for their own expenses. Time does fly!

I would agree with no charging. To expand, most timeshares require guests to be older, sometimes as old as 25, to check in. So if anyone exchanges or uses points for non DVC options, that's something to consider.

My daughter and her college roommate used my points to stay at the BWV's when they were both 18. They had no issues at all and had a great time. WDW is one place where I felt they'd be totally safe and as my daughter spent many a vacation with us at WDW she knew her way around and was quite comfortable.---Kathy

My thoughts exactly. I can't think of any other place that I feel as comfortable allowing my dd to travel to, on her own, other than WDW. She has about 15 or so trips under her belt....is so comfortable there. She really knows her way around, so this was a win/win when the three girls started talking about going in 18 months.

The girls wanted BLT..but I only have 50 pts a year...so even if I borrowed 2013's pts, they could have still only had a standard studio...so, dd decided a boardwalk view studio is a better idea. Have fun with your girls...almost wish I was going along, but not this time!!

FWIW, a couple weeks at OKW while talking with someone at the concierge desk, I was told that one of the benefits of the new computer system is that they can easily split room charges between CCs.

Not that I think it's a fabulous idea to allow room charging to 18 year olds (not having been a financially responsible 18 year old myself), but thought it was pretty cool to hear!

Was just thinking about allowing my DD and her friends to use our DVC this summer for a graduation trip. DD will be 18 in March so I thought this might be a nice surprise for them. It is interesting how we all wonder where the years have gone....we haven't gotten any older just the kids

Yes, I am aware of the capability. I was more concerned with the fact that 18 year olds (or younger) may or may not have a credit card in their own name and be financially independent when traveling on their own. It is very easy to say to a friend "please let me use your card" and then have issues when it is time to pay the bill. After all, the DVC owner will ultimately be responsible for any charges to the room..

I'm so glad to hear that they can split room charges between CC's now. We went with friends back in April and we had to go to the front desk at the end of our trip to print out a list of each room keys' purchases so they could pay with their CC and we could pay with ours! I don't understand what the big deal would be to apply a particular CC to a particular room key right at check-in. Hopefully it will all work out smoothly with this new system!!

I think that when we're down in 2012 on our "Grad Trip", I will probably insist that our DD and her guests don't have "room charging priviledges" on their keys.

Yep, that would be my issue. These girls are all pretty 'grounded' but away from home, at a fun place..well, you can never tell what they're going to do. I figure that they don't have to pay for lodging, so that makes only food and tickets/air to pay for. I'm sure they will be paying cash for everything. Works out much better that way.
I'm going to suggest that their parents get Disney GCs with SCRIP through the school. Much better than having a bunch of cash. That's what my dd will have.

In the back of my mind, I always thought I'd let my two DDs do this as part of a graduation gift (now they're only 11 and 8). I'd love to know how this trip works out!

DD age 18 is doing this for New Years, she has her own debit card/visa and also two of my credit cards with her name on it. I added her as an associate so if they decide they want to add days and can't get me, it shouldn't be a problem. Let's see if I'm this calm after 1/2!! haha

My son is 17 and only a junior but talks about a senior trip with this buddies. I think it is the best way to start them out on "their own" vacation. Since my son has been going at least once a year since he was 4 I know that he will be just fine. I would also love to hear how one of the "graduation" trips turned out!
