1776 on Turner Classic Movies

I love the dialoge of 1776! While attending college in Philadelphia (Temple Univ.-go OWLS!) my roomates and I practically memorized the entire script!

...fast forward a gazillion years...This week DD9 & I are headed to Philadelphia to see Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, Franklin Court, etc. Of course we'll have to watch "1776" prior to our daytrip!

"...You're (John Adams) obnoxious and disliked, that cannot be denied"... T.Jefferson 1776

I saw this for the first time last night and I LOVED it.

Thomson: Where's Rhode Island?
McNair: Rhode Island's out visiting the necessary.
Hancock: Well, after what Rhode Island has consumed, I can't say I'm surprised. We'll come back to him, Mr. Thompson.
Thomson: Rhode Island passes.

John Hancock: I'm concerned over the continued absence of 1/13th of this Congress. Where is New Jersey?
John Dickinson: Somewhere between New York and Pennsylvania.

What the Heck said:
So how many historical inaccuracies are in the movie? I only know of 2 (1. "Careful Mr. Dickenson, those who sacrifice their liberty for security deserve neither liberty nor security" (or something like that) wasn't said by Franklin and 2. Jefferson did go home to Virginia during that month).

If you can get a copy of the script, there's an essay in it by Peter Stone, in which he talks about the historical changes they had to make. You're correct, in real life Jefferson went home. It would have been awkward to do that on stage.

One change, or rather omission, is particularly memorable. There's a quote of Adams, saying that, if they pull the slavery clause out of the Declaration, someday there would be war. What he really said was that there would be war "within a hundred years." Stone decided that this was too accurate, and nobody would believe that Adams actually said it.

"Somebody ooopen up a window!"

Once again you come between me and my lovely bride
Lovely bride
Mr. Adams, you are driving me to homocide.

We're waiting for the chirp, chirp, chirp
Of an eaglet being born
We're waiting for the chirp, chirp, chirp
On this humid Monday morning in this
Congressional incubator

God knows the temperature's hot enough
To hatch a stone, let alone an egg

I love this thread! I thought I was the only one who loved this musical! So, this morning after reading some of this, I went right onto Amazon and bought the DVD and CD (all I have is the LP with no turntable any longer)!

ok im a day late....
DH was singing along with the movie last night... :rotfl:
and he informed we we have this on VHS..

"...and may my horses turn to glue, if I can't deliver unto you, Resolution for Independency"!

I caught the second half of it!!!! I love 1776!!!

I'm a musical nut and this is one of my favorites. I don't own it but I really ought to put it on my Christmas wish list.

Love, love, love this movie. We have it on DVD!

Love the part where Ben Franklin wants a turkey for the country's symbol!!! :goodvibes

About 40 minutes was restored to the print, including the song "Cool, Considerate Men" which Jack Warner had cut at the request of Richard Nixon. It also includes the introduction to "He Plays the Violin," which you can tell is missing from Blythe Danner's dance step, which is totally out of place without the introduction.

While I'm not sure, the odds are excellent that Turner is showing a theatrical print, which does not contain the added material.

TCM showed the restored print--so Cool Considerate Men was included. At the end of the movie,TCM host, Bob Osborne commented that Warner had had this number cut because of Nixon.

I was lucky enough to see the show on Broadway a few years ago, with Brent Spiner as John Adams.

I do believe you've laid a curse on North America
A curse that we now here rehearse in Philadelphia
A second flood, a simple famine
Plagues of locusts everywhere
Or a cataclysmic earthquake
I'd accept with some despair
But, no, you sent us Congress.
Good God, sir, was that fair?

Good for TCM. Restores my faith in a TV network.

Mr. Morris....WHAT THE HELL GOES ON IN NEW YORK??

They speak very fast and very loud, and nobody listens to anybody else, with the result that nothing ever gets done.

As true today as it was in 1776. (Are you listening up ther in Albany?)
