Hello,

We're getting close to purchasing but are trying to decide exactly how many points we will need. I think 150 will be sufficient (we'll see how long I think that) but I thought I remember seeing a post a while back about 160 points giving you more options with the various collections outside of the Disney properties. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but for some reason I feel like I've seen something to that effect. Any advice or insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That is actually correct (and very smart of you to think of btw!!). Right now, 160 pts will get you a one-bedroom during high season into a world passport trade.

Besides...if you've got the choice...ALWAYS go for more points!!!

I would advise buying your points slowly (if you are buying through Disney), but if the difference is between 150 and 160, go for 160 to get those extra benefits for trading.

We bought 250 points recently at SSR and immediately started getting the info about adding on where Disney gives you incentives to do so (like the most recent which included 2 annual passes AND a vacation - if memory serves me correctly). I don't believe there is any additional cost when buying through Disney (they pay closing) so we could have purchased 150 and then 25 points at a time for a few years to get the maximum benefit from these promotional offers.

Actually your theory is wrong there. Most of the incentives DVC offers for add-ons are usually for a minimum add-on of 100 points. The free AP incentive (by the way it was the AP's or a week using the World Passport collection, not both) you needed a minimum add-on of 130 points. So, if you had purchased the 150 points to start out, you would actually had to purchase 130 points (and have more points than you have now) to take advantage of the AP offer.

Buy what you think is necessary, but since you're debating between 150 and 160 points, I'd go for the 160 points. As posted earlier, you need 160 points to trade out for a 1 bedroom in the World Passport Collection, during high season. This would give you the flexibility to do a trade, without having to borrow to make it happen.

hmmmm I must have misread - but I still would have purchased in two seperate buys if I had known. It doesn't effect this person with their choice being between 150-160 but it might effect others like me that decide to purchase bigger numbers.

The problem with buying in dribs in drabs is that the cost of points goes up. I could see buying in two separate increments if your initial purchase was in the summer but not buying over a few years if you could buy outright to begin with.

It's been a year since we joined but I think you have to buy in even increments of 25.

So 160 would become 175.......

We bought at 200.
(so we wouldn't get that add-on itch right away)

That's incorrect. You have to buy a minimum of 150 points, but after that amount you can buy any increment, even 151 if you wanted. Also for add-ons, you have to buy a minimum of 25 points, but can then buy any increment after that, meaning you can buy 26 points. You just have to add-on a minimum of 50 points to utilize DVC financing, and usually add-on 100 points to take advantage of any current DVC incentives. The current AP incentive requires a minimum add-on of 130 points.

I think you should get 155 points. That was the size of our initial contract, and I was probably the only one who ever did that.

No problem. Simply look up how many points you think you'll need per year and then double it.

When we discussed the idea of buying with our guide...he was smart enough to mention the 160 point factor for trading purposes...makes complete sense!

Of course, we ended up buying 200...and I would really like more!

jollymon2,

Two things you hear alot on the DVC boards are: (1) I wish I had purchased DVC sooner and (2) I wish I had purchased more points.

My suggestion, buy a little extra, say 175, 180, or even 200. I'm sure you will always use your full allotment of points. Good luck!

It depends on how you will use it. I'd likely allow about a 10% extra number of points for this contract size. Add ons are a min of 25 points later but that can, and likely will, change.

I'd buy the 160 for the trade value. To get the "big" benefits with adding through Disney you have to purchase something like 100 or 130 points as your add on. I think you need at least a 50 point add on to get their financing. So, not buying the 10 extra points now probably means you won't get them later (unless of course you do a much larger then 10 point add on :D ). 160 will get you a 1 bedroom in high season anywhere in the world passport collection. Good luck! :flower:

Our 1st contract was for 164 points at OKW. This gives us 6 nights in a 1BR during Magic season. Our 2nd contract was for 64 BWV points. This gives us a Fri/Sat preferred studio Magic season. Our 3rd contract was for 50 BCV points. We just rounded up this time from 32 (a weekend Magic night) to give us access to Stormalong Bay one night during our trips plus the thought was a hedge if points were reallocated since we had bought to the point in the past.. Our 4th contract was for 100 BWV points. This amount gave us a discounted purchase price and more points.
Grand total, 378 points. We are done.
Figure out how mwny nights you want to stay a year and buy that number of points.....plus a few if you want a hedge for reallocation. It turns out, we loved it so much that we wanted more nights.....hence, more points......Spruce

Perhaps, you might think of the points purchase as you would packing for a trip. The way I have always found works best is you pack what you think you'll need, then put half the stuff back into your drawers at home and bring twice the money. Half the stuff, twice the money. A good rule of thumb. So for DVC points, perhaps pack half the stuff and buy twice the number of points?

Seriously tho, if you can afford the 160 points, it will gove you much more flexibility.

For World Passport trades, I think you would be better off renting out your points and staying for cash, if you're going peak season. If you're going off-season, perhaps do a direct trade. For example, I have another timeshare inherited from my late FIL for off-season time at a very nice timeshare in Newport RI; it trades pretty well for shoulder season and off season trades but not so well for when we can travel. So with last year's week we traded for a week in a 2BR in the Berkshires in Western Mass in shoulder (almost high) season, and swapped that for 90 DVC points with another DVCer. They got a 2BR for much ess than the DVC trade cost of a 1BR, and we got some extra points to use this year. I'm still working on what to do with this year's week (already deposited with II) but I am hoping to do a similar trade perhaps.

Similarly, if we wanted a 2BR summer week at Mont Tremblant in Quebec, it would run us 270 points thru DVC, but a mere $1200 Canadian to rent it directly, so if we do that, we'll pay cash, thx.

I agree with the 160. We had the same issue. We went with the 160. Lot more flexibility. Now looking at adding and additional 200.

Hi:
we started with 160 and less than a week I called back and had them redo the contract for for 50 more . So in May of this year we bought 210 points. Then when we bought 140 more when they added the 2 AP's.
That all for now though I would like a total of 500
have fun
Steve
