My daughter has been doing single rider for quite a while. She's 12 now but I think she was 9 the first time she did it. She looks young for her age too so luckily, they use 48" as stated. She prefers single rider for some lines even when we have express!
If she doesn't want to do single rider, then I'd wait it out and see if it makes sense while you are there. They won't sell out of express passes for that day. A lot of the southeast will be back in school then. Others are still on break so I wouldn't expect crowds to be down to low, but it likely will be much more manageable than just a week or two earlier in the summer.
