We have a tiny little rancher, only 1100 square feet. It is a perfect rectangle 42x27. We had an estimate done the other evening for siding and it came back at $14,000. :scared1: I was shocked. I guess the guy could tell because he said that if we scheduled the installation right away he would drop it to $13,000. Ok well, I tell him no, thank you but no. He then says "OK well, I could go as low as $7,000." I still said no but thanks. What kind of profit would they have made if I had just said "$14,000? OK let's do it!"

We are going to get another estimate from another company but $14,000? Oh my gosh, I had no idea. I think we may end up painting after all. My FIL had his painted 3 years ago and it looks great, that may be our best option. And the estimate for painting came back at $1,200.

Was that for vinyl siding? Vinyl siding shouldn't cost that much and you would never have to repaint it!

OMG! That guy was trying to take you for a RIDE! We are building a 1500 sq ft. garage/apartment beside our house and vinyl for it is only running 3,000!!!

ETA: some of the garage is brick but a large portion is vinyl

Now you're freaking me out! We just had someone come by tonight for a quote on vinyl siding, gutters and windows! I can only imagine what our price is going to be!

One difference between new construction and replacement is they do have to do the tear off and removal of the old siding, so I can see an extra charge for that.

Oh well, I guess at least now I'm prepared and will be ready to say, "Thanks, but no thanks"!

Word of advice.

If you get an estimate from Sears, check with someone else.

On my first home, I was dumb enough to let them do it and found that I had paid about double what I should have.

Here is a rough estimate of what it should cost. Siding is sold by the square (box). A square is 10 ft x 10 ft. I am not taking any siding out for windows so that should be close to the 10% extra for scrap.

42 + 42 + 27 + 27 = 138 linear feet.

I will estimate you have 10 feet high to side.

That is 1380 square feet or 14 boxes of siding.

Low end (contractor grade) siding should be about $50/box and high end (premium grade) is about $150/box.

So the range for siding only should be $700 - 2100.

Then you need to add removal (~$1000), disposal (~500), installation (~$2000) for a grand total rough estimate of $4200 - $6600.

We had vinyl siding installed in July 2004. Our house is 2300 sq ft on two levels, total price was $16,000 from a local builder. This did include more expensive vinyl "brick" along the bottom and around the door. I'll post a pic of it. The brick looks real, the people directly across the street thought it was brick.

Estimate from Sears was $35,000 and from a local window company was $23,000.

Around here, you never see them do a tear off. They simply nail a 1/4 or 3/8" piece of fanfold insulation over the sheathing and hang the new vinyl siding overtop. They start with casing out the windows and doors with J-channel just like anywhere else, and install the new vinyl as you would with new construction.

One thing to keep in mind -- vinyl siding is a plastic which comes from petrolium. Gas is again costing us more, so the raw materials for the siding cost more. Whatever you do, I woudn't contact the first guy (Mr. $14,000) again for anything. He's already shown you his lack of honesty. Get quotes from as many companies as you can, and ask for addresses in your area where they've hung siding. Don't be afraid to check out their work!

We recently had to do extensive reconstruction on our house (thanks, Katrina!). One of our most expensive materials turned out to be the siding. We just purchased it by the box and we had our contractor handle the installation. Turned out to be the "surprise expense" of our redo.

:sunny: Thanks so much for all the responses. We plan to get several other estimates before we make a final decision. I'll let you know what our other estimates are.

We had our siding done last march - we have a dormered cape cod, and we went through many contractors until we found one that was honest at a good price. My dh did the rip off of the old siding himself, saving us a couple thousand dollars, but we did have to get a dumpster, which was about $300.00. In all, the siding cost us $9000.00 - we did opt for the cedar impressions and some gingerbread scallops in the front of the house which increased the price, but, boy I thought that was expensive!!

We have cedar siding, 3300 sf on one level, had planned to do the cedar shake-style vinyl siding - but ended up painting instead. We still ended up painting all the trim, windows, etc... but way cheaper than siding would have been!

14,000 :scared: , you could of got a berger and fries at Disney for that kind of money

:rotfl: I read the title of this thread as, "'414,000 for a sibling!?!?!"

Definately get more estimates. We have a two story home, nearly all siding with a little brick. Three years ago we had a terrible hail storm and 75% of the houses in our subdivision were damaged. We had a new roof, gutters and siding for less than $12,000. We met with several contractors, including some really shady guys who magically appeared after the storm and ended up choosing a company that we were comfortable with, not neccessairly the cheapest.

I agree that quote is completely ridiculous and the fact that he lowered it down to 7k so quickly is disturbing. I got a quote from another company conservation construction of texas and it was starting around 7k for the same size building. I would do it myself if you were looking to save money and if not just call somebody else nobody should have to pay that much for vinyl siding.

OOOOO a Zombie thread.

14 zombies polled this time.

8 zombies said go with Cedar siding because they like Cedar plank brains.
5 zombies asked if they could invite the price gouger over for dinner.
1 zombie drooled. We took it as our cue to leave.

These peeked my curiosity. Seems the least expensive vinyl siding Home Depot has on their website is $145......if you buy at least 5 boxes.
