13 Things A Burgular Won't Tell You

There was a TV show on one of the Science/History type channels and basically people would take part in an attempted burgarly on their home. An convict, turned security expert would then do exactly that, while being watched on camera. It really was a wake up call to many of the individuals taking part, just how easy it was to break into the home, steal things without anyone taking notice at all.

The security expert then would help them lock down their house better, keeping things safer, etc. It was an interesting show.

That's an interesting list. A house in our neighborhood was robbed during the day. Their front door was unlocked. We have an alarm system.

My advice - move someplace where this is so rare an occurance that no one knows anyone that has had their home robbed. Yeah, those places still exist in America.

That would eliminate pretty much every major (and not so major) metropolitan center. Plus it often gives people a false sense of security. I am a person that believes you take as many actions as you can, but you cannot control those around you.

Me too.

No - if the area is safer, it is safer. That is not a false sense of security. That is reality. Some places are a whole lot safer.

Absolutely not true...it may be safer on par, but that sense of safety makes you less likely to take the same safety precautions as in other areas.

You crack me up. I don't know where you live, but it cannot be on the same planet as me... :lmao:

Please elaborate. If you look at areas with general low crime rates, the incidents of crime often tend to be more aggressive, more violent or larger in nature. Of course this is a generalization to some degree (just as your is).

Areas with lower crime rates have more violent crime? Sorry, you have to show me some stats to back that up. Where I live we have very low crime rates and almost no violent crime.

I didn't say more, just that when it does happen it tends to be more aggressive, more brutal, because people's guards are down (when I stated larger, I didn't mean more, I mean bigger in scope). People get lax.

I grew up in an amazingly safe neighborhood, I left my convertible top down on my car all the time, doors unlocked, houses were rarely locked, etc. Then one weekend there was a string of robberies, culminating with a violent attack on an elderly woman who the burglars thought wasn't home.

No one expected this to happen in our neighborhood, we had one of the lowest crime rates in the area, limited to no violent crime in many, many years, then it hit hard. It could have been avoided or at least reduced if people didn't become lax in their safety.

Again, I just don't accept that. Crime rates are lower because the people are not as desperate in some places. Sure, crimes of passion can happen anywhere, but home break-ins don't just happen anywhere. And violent crime doesn't just happen anywhere. Those crimes happen more often in areas with more offenders - and less often where there are less offenders. A thief doesn't drive hours to break into a home in a neighborhood with which he is unfamiliar to score a big screen TV.

This is a pointless conversation to continue...we both have contrary experiences that we disagree with each other on.

LOL - there are some very nice places to live in NJ. There is a lot more to this state than Trenton and Newark... :thumbsup2

I've been to a quite few places in NJ, it's more of a joke in jest, we have a huge office in Jersey City that makes our office in NYC look like a Walmart compared to a Nieman Marcus; plus I've been to a few other locations with friends (and have friends that live there). ;)
