oh my god i can't believe that! i'm glad she's ok!!

pharmacies are supposed to call the doctor's office that prescribed the medicine if they can't read the writing, not just guess! and the fact that they wouldn't let her file a report.......that's insane! i think you should call them and see who's in charge of the pharmacy and tell them you want to file a report. it really should be done to prevent it from happening again.

hey.........try having a DOCTOR prescribe you medicine you can't take. yep, that's right......my doctor prescribed me sudafed.....which i can not take because of heart palpatation problems. it's literlary a "reaction" rather than a "side effect" and once he actually prescribed me meds with sudafed in it and another time he was just about to until i said "uhm......you DO remember that i can't take that.......right??" ...."oh yeah .....yeah that's right"......you'd think he'd have that flagged in my chart somewhere.

sometimes i think people forget how fatal meds can be to some people.

C.Ann - I'm glad it was caught in time before it was serious. I'm always leary of any medicine and always double check after reading something similar in the past. Thanks for sharing for others to learn too! :goodvibes

If it was a refill, why would the be going off of a script? Wouldn't that already be on file for easy reference if she's had it for 2 years now? How irresponsible of them and how scary for you guys... glad she is ok :goodvibes

Common sense and the law require that they contact the doctor if they can't read the handwriting. An honest mistake is grabbing the wrong container...but even then, they are supposed to check and re-check.

Guessing isn't an honest mistake.

My doc prints scripts out from the computer. :)

It was a new script because they originally told her she had no refills of the correct medicine left - yet when she caused a ruckus about getting the wrong med, low and behold, they found she still had one more refill of the correct medication on file.. Talk about bumbling idiots!!!

A couple of years ago I had a similar incident, but I caught it as soon as I got home and opened the bottle.. The pharmacy gave me a medication that was meant to regulate someone's heart rate and gave them my migraine medication.. I filed a report with the local pharmacy and the national headquarters as well..

I thought that was just a one-in-a-million shot, but after this fiasco, I'll never "assume" I have the correct medication again! :furious:

My doctor does that now too - thank God!!

Wow... I would definitely report it... to who, I don't know but that is in no way an "honest mistake" :sad2: . Thank god nothing more serious happened but I know that's not much comfort right now. I would be :furious:

First, I hope your daughter is okay!!!!! Second, report it!!!!!!! Someone at that pharmacy should have picked up the phone and called the doctor if they couldn't read it. :furious:

I think you just gave me the push to take my meds I picked up last week back to the pharmacy to be sure it's the right thing in the bottle. Geez. These are orange. In all the years I've been taking this, even the generic, it's always been white! Grrrrr. Have to HATE generics!!!!

A "different" color is what tipped me off with the heart medication I was given by accident.. You would be safer taking them back in and checking it out - or at the very least, look up the name on the bottle on-line and see if it is in fact a generic form of your prior med..

I can't say I am surprised at this happening (it had happened to me. I was lucky I caught it before taking it) but I am very sorry it happened to her. That must have been awful and scary for her and everyone. Thanks for reminding everyone this can happen and does happen far too often.

Myst

:sad2: C. Ann, I am so sorry this happened to your dd. I actually posted about something similar awhile back....they gave my daughter the generic for XANAX for an ear infection!!!!

Luckily, we caught it before she took any, but after all the complaining we did withthe pharmacy and their corporate office - we still got nothing but an "oops, sorry" in return.

I guess I shouldn't be so shocked because pharmacy "techs" are allowed to fill prescriptions in most drug stores now and then the actual pharmacist is supposed to check them once they're filled.. (My stepdaughter was a pharmacy tech for a national pharmacy chain with nothing more than a high school diploma.)

Don't know which one made the mistake here - or maybe it was both - but it's totally unacceptable to play games with peoples lives..

Unbelievable. Exactly why it should be reported. Medication errors are a huge deal in hospitals. I'd think it's just as serious for pharmacies! I'm sure the state(s) would be interested in knowing.

The label on the bottle is correct as far as the medication's name. It's the pills inside that are different. Different color, smaller, and I can't read the dang lettering on them. Too tiny. I'll be taking them with me to work tomorrow since I got them in the pharmacy at the hospital. I'm sure they'll be telling me that it's a different drug company than the pills I previously had.

Hmmm..that does sound a little suspicious, doesn't it? Yup - take them in.. Better safe than sorry..

One good thing our pharmacy does, is that it prints out on the bottle what the pill should look like and what letters/numbers are on it. It wouldn't have helped in your case, but at least if they have the name of the medicine right, I can double check that they did in fact grab the correct pill.

I am glad your daughter found out before she had serious problems!

You are right, you should always double check. I am allergic to several medications, and have been accidentally dispensed one before. You can look up online to find what they should look like. I am paranoid, I look up anything new that I am prescribed.

I think I'd change pharmacies too! That would scare me enough that I wouldn't trust those people again!
