That says A LOT. I'm really suprised that the teacher carried out that "tradition" considering the type of area you are in. I'm sure your SIL was horrified and I completely understand his feelings and he has every right to them. As a parent his job is to protect his child, I'd just see if he could take this up with the teacher. I'm actually curious about where this teacher is from now because I've never heard of a northern school doing the whole birthday "spanking" ritual

Northern girl here! Very suburban Catholic school...we got the spanking and the pinch to grow an inch.

It is in NO way inappropriate. The teachers enjoy it only to the extent that it makes the kids so happy. It is a lot of fun to be up in front of the room, get your spanking, your pinch, your little gift (ours were pens or pencils) and then pass out your treat to the rest of the kids.

I think your school handled it correctly. If parents want their kids excluded from it, fine. But this is the first kid I ever heard of that was upset in any way...most kids absolutely love it!

The kids all get it. It is fun and an honor. It's the parents who don't get it.

While this particular issue is "closed" now, it doesn't mean that my DD & her DH won't investigate any further incidents with this teacher - or any other teacher for that matter.. It's a fine line to walk and it really saddens me that we live in a world where we constantly have to have our guards up against teachers, policemen, doctors, priests, scout leaders, etc..

Thankfully the world has changed enough that instead of sweeping it under the rug and pretending it doesn't happen now kids like your DGD are taught that it isn't appropriate and that their voice matters. Knowledge is on their side.
