We are renting Disney vacation club points and plan on doing the dining plan. My 12 year old is so picky and won't like much on the adult menu. Do we have to get the dining plan for him or can we just pay OOP for him and the rest of the family do the dining plan?

Everyone on the reservation must have the same plan.

BUT, he doesn't have to use the credits. You will have to pay for the plan, but then you can use his credits to do more meals and just pay OOP for a kid's meal for him.

The issue with his ordering from the children's menu is that you are paying for an adult plan. Which means you lose some money on that plan for every children's meal he orders and you pay for with an adult dining credit. You may not care about that, but if you do, then you can pay for the children's meals you order for him and use the credits for extra meals for the rest of your group.

If you had plans to do buffets, family style AYCE or fixed price/dinner shows, then you'd be paying the adult price for him no matter what he ate, so it wouldn't matter so much.

The one and only time we had the dining plan, my son wanted a kid's meal at a counter service. He was not under the age of ten. They would not let him get it.

You can also order adult-sized portions of kids meals at most TS restaurants. Last year we were forced to do that at both BOG and The Wave. My 14-year old DD wanted kids pasta and the waitresses refused to allow her to order the smaller, cheaper portion.

Maybe just go up to the CS by yourself? We often don't take the entire family up with us when we buy the meals, so the people at the CS really have no idea who we are buying meals for. Sometimes we visit multiple CS places for the kids for lunch, and we'll go up and order just one kids meal, and they never say anything about it.
