12/16/06 10-day holiday cruise Part 3

Samantha was asking me last night if she was going to be able to use her KTTW card to buy things on the ship! She also wants sign-out privileges. I'm not sure the two go together! the idea of a 10 year old with free reign on the account and loose on the ship scares me! All I need for her is to start buying arcade cards or something. That is something we will have to set down VERY strict rules for and make them very clear at the beginning and if they are broken even once, she loses them.

Last year was the first time I gave check out privaleges to the boys. I gave them a walkie talkie so if I needed them I could hunt them down. They also had to check in a couple times a day. I was all over the ship so I ran into them everywhere...except for when Michael went into the Theater to watch a movie I could not reach him...I looked everywhere and finallly went in there and there he was...alll full of smiles.

Also If they checked into the lab they needed to let me know and when they left they needed to let me know. I asked what they were planning on doing and who they were with. Always had to leave on the buddy system...Michael always left on the buddy system but sometimes his "buddy would leave and go somewhere else.

I never have and wont give them privaledges with money...I will however everyday day give them there arcade card. I give them a certain amount twice a day..so if they loose it or use it all at once they are not coming back to me that they used it all in 1 hr.

If I find that they are abbusing the check out privalege by getting to wild around the ship..than we revoke them for the rest of that day or part of the next. Have not had that problem as of yet but know that Branden is a Tween/Jan 21 Teen...who knows what his crazy brain may do.

Michael...he is cool and is not at that stage yet so dont expect any problems wit him...

Know this is long to read but this is what I plan to do!

Hope your daugther feels better, Don'y ya just hate when your kids get sick...I feel so dsad for them!

Hope your dh is not in pain for to long...good he did that before the cruise it will make him have more fun..Billie had surgery on his Colon...part of it removed due to Diverticulitis...if he didnt do it before the cruise he would not be able to eat all the great food...that would be a drag!!!

Did I miss anyone...if I did not intentional.

Hope DH feels better...I've heard hernia surgery is painful. Near the ab, right? Even laughing hurts?

He needs to get better soon, so he can with everyone on the cruise! Give him our best!

Yep!! He pulled it at work over a year and a half ago and it has been growing ever since. We have affectionately come to know it as "alien baby". I told him, "Ya ain't getting on the cruise with that thing hanging out of your belly!!" He should be fully recovered by then. Although I don't know if I will survive him being home out of work for the next five weeks . Oh Yea, I'll be ready for the cruise

Do the walkie talkies really work on the ship? We have some but I have heard the standard ones just don't work too well and I know she won't carry them and she doesn't wear anything with pockets. I plan on having a white board IN our room and if she signs out of the lab I expect her to stop by the room (we are on deck 5 so it is just down the hall) and leave me a note telling me where she is going and who she is with. I agree, I think all the kids who are going to be allowed to sign themselves in and out should have to have a buddy when they leave. One of the things we do here is that we also expect the kids to police each other. If they are playing together and one does something that will get them in trouble they will both get in trouble because the other should have known enough to stop the the first one from doing whatever it was that got them in trouble. What does anyone else think?

Here are some simple, basic rules that could be used to apply to any of the 9-12 group that are given sign-out privileges. I definitely think the buddy system is a necessity and I would think it might be a good idea if the same rules applied to all just so we aren't dealing with the "it's not fair, so and so doesn't have that rule" issue. Let me know what you think and if there are any other rules we might want, or any of these you think aren't reasonable:

1. If you sign yourself out of the lab, take a buddy
2. No running wild around the ship
3. No going in the pool without a parent to supervise (on sea days I suspect you will find my DH at poolside with his book and his mp3 player because DD loves to play in the water)
4. Contact your parent(s) in the manner you have been told to to let them know where you are going
5. If you see your buddy attempting to break a rule, do your best to keep them from doing so as both parties will be equally liable to punishment (by their own parents, of course)

As far as charging, I just had a little talk with DD about tjat. She thought the card had a limit. I explained that she was only going to be allowed to charge IF she asked us first. If we found charges that she made without asking us first she would lose her ability to charge. She didn't like that but I am not allowing her free reign. She will get a limit too, though I don't really have any way to control it, unfortunately.

I did give my kids charge priviledges last Nov on our cruise and they were really good - except DD got a passion for those coconut mickey candies and she had to have them every night before the show and brought home 3 boxes of them!!!!

I never allowed them to go to the arcade - I guess I am going to have to allow Nick to go id "Doomedforever" is going. Now he wants his own screen name just like his new friend... am I going to have Robin's problem???

Not really but my kids are 16 and 14. They have charge priviledges and they don't have to check in but I leave a sticky pad on the door for them to leave us notes incase they are looking for us. Also I give them all a chedule of events that are planned for the day - like "I will be at the spa" find dad!!!
