110 employees in Miami lose their jobs - because of New Visa rules

I thought this is not a debate forum?

PS: before I became a Canadian, applying for US Visa is like begging for money. Extremely long lineups from wee hours in the morning in front of the US Embassy in Toronto. Worse, they limit the number of visa given each day, no exception.

Try doing that during winter time (they won't OK a visa unless it's dang close to the trip's time)

Ha ha ha another great thread …..

Let me get this straight… the options are….

54 people lose their jobs (sad for them.. yes)

or

293,636,199 people (including those 54) lose their protection against possible terrorist attacks.

I think it’s a no brainer.. don’t you?

I also find it funny that DISer’s ..err 2 DISer’s bash America for not having done enough to stop the 9/11 attacks…(the truth will come out..right) yet when we do sometime America also gets bashed. Go figure!

You 've got that right, Charlie-baybee!

Unfortunately, we are the Land of Free speech ,and have to tolerate VH's constant bad mouthing of our GREAT USA!!!!.

So, Miami is the only place people who work for an airline that refuses to compete in the local marketplace get laid off?

Glad to see there is full employement in the good ole' EU, & Britain too.

If the US government requires a foreign national to have a visa, even to go from gate 10 to gate 20 at the airport, it's ok by me.

There presently is no mechanism to keep some one allegedly traveling from between countries with a stopover in the US from debarking and entering the country illegally. If this helps control that, It's OK by me.

IMHO, the government should be doing "visa checks" to even allow someone to leave the freakin' airport.

If this bothers you, fly non-stop.

If Iberia chooses to no longer compete in the marketplace, that is their choice.

To travel to the US or through the US, people must get a visa, period. Spanish people have known this for many years.
I must say if you fly to Spain , as soon as you get to Madrid , if your final destination is Madrid , they will let you off the plane but take you straight into immigration. If your final destination is another one, you will not be allowed to get off the plane until after the immigration authorities check you out while you are still in the plane , at that time all passports are checked and is someone does not have everything correct, that plane will not move until things are worked out and nobody is allowed on the plane or off the plane.
I know because eventhough I am a Spanish citizen , I live in the US and I travel with my american family , everytime we go through the same thing.
Iberia is ticked off now because they are the ones on the receiving end, but this is something that the spanish authorities have been practicing since before 9/11/2001, and they didn't care if the people on their planes then , were inconvenienced or not, it gave more jobs to the spanish authorities and that's what they wanted.
I have actually been yelled at because I took my children in the line with me for Spanish citizens getting into Barcelona, they wanted my children ( ages 2 and 6 ) in the foreigners line and me in the spanish citizens one , no way in hell that I was going to leave my children alone!

I think his policies are wrong !!!!!

WHY DO YOU CARE!!! He's not YOUR president!!

Well, I can certainly see how people in other countries could care about what our President does, since his policies often affect the rest of the world greatly.

But I wanted to say that 54 jobs, in the grand scheme of things, are sadly a small price to pay for security. Something else to consider is the fact that the increased security since 9/11 has opened up a LOT of new job opportunities in other areas--we know quite a few people who left jobs they hated and are now happily working as TSA agents and Air Marshals and in other airline-security related fields that began hiring like crazy in the last couple of years. :)

VH's "caring" extends to obsession; but only if he can continue to criticize the President.

Yeah maybe George could give them something out of the $18.4 billion for Iraq fund.

VH, WHAT would you like to see happen in Iraq? Would you like the terrorist to take over and then come to the US? Do you not think that we should take prudent security precautions. I always hear a lot of criticism but what are your suggestions? Do you have any??

But what do you call posting thread after thread after thread attacking the policies of the US Gov't?

I don't care if it's personal or not, it's still an attack.

That's all you seem to do.

There you go again, linking unrelated problems to Iraq.

Nice.

I don't think so

WHAT would you like to see happen in Iraq?

The U.S troops removed from Iraqi soil - the Iraqi people to take over the running of their country ( not a puppet regime that is in place now )

Don't worry. If Kerry wins I hear he personally will find every unemployed person in the USA a job.

Are you really obsessing over 54 jobs? Look, having a job is not a right.

Which "group" of Iraqi people?? Those lead by El Sadr? How about those espousing the views of religious extremists that would deny rights to women? The Iraqi people are running there country but they need help with the security problems that they are facing.

Yeah tell that to the 54 people looking for new jobs

I do have sympathy for those people....you see me and my 150+ co-workers are all looking for work right now. Wanna know why? Because we worked for a boss who thought giving his $$ to God (in the form of "churches" begging for $$) was more important than paying his bills.

Iberia has been on the brink of closing shop for some time. High fuel costs and less demand is behind the closing of the Miami hub for Iberia, not the new visa rules.
