My DS11 is looking to load some songs onto his iPhone...he's running out of ideas. What do your kids this age listen to???

I am probably not the person to ask, I let my kids listen to whatever they want to. Lady gaga, and basically anything that is listed in the I tunes store that they like. I really don't censor their music, but I really don't listen to it enough to tell you the names of what the listen to.

My DS is 12 and listens too:

AC/DC
Aerosmith
Queen
Guns n Roses
Tom Petty
Def Leppard
The Who
Poison
Eminem (Just one due to language)
Johnny Cash
Charlie Daniels
Garth Brooks
Weird Al

And an assortment of other artists.

What type of music does he like and do you sensor what he listens to? DD and I have the same playlist so I can take a look at what she has downloaded for us recently. Just set up a few parameters / a direction. Does he like Paramore? Would he listed to Enrique Iglesias? How about Nickelback? They have a couple of good songs out.

He's just sort of getting into music. At this point I don't have a reason to censor what he listens to because he isn't interested in anything that I feel is an issue YET.

I'm not sure HE knows what he likes yet, but I know he does NOT like rap. :worship:

DD is almost 12 and just started 7th grade. She is just now developing her own taste in music- so far, she is mostly into the teenybop and dance-y stuff. Her faves right now:

Camp Rock 2 soundtrack
Big Time Rush
Lady Gaga
Ke$ha (ick)
Blackeyed Peas
Usher
Selena Gomez
Katy Perry
OneRepublic
Little Bootz
The Chipmunk movies soundtracks
Owl City
music from Glee

DD12 has a lot of popular/current music on hers.

DS12 has mostly older rock, ie my music. He also has some Disney songs, baseball songs and movie songs.

My DS started getting more interested in music at that age and ran into the same problem. We just got him a few mixed cd's (he didn't have an ipod at the time) and just let him listen to as wide a variety of genres as possible. He started with Nickelback and has migrated into rock and classic rock, for the moment. He tended to listen to the same things we listen to, but is starting to branch out a bit now.

Maybe suggest Bryan Adams, Nickelback, Weird Al, or music from soundtracks like Shrek etc. I remember he liked the Crazy Frog and similar goofy songs as well.

This - almost exactly the same! Although I have to say that we listened to some of the Blackeyed Pea music and had to have some interesting conversations. I don't listen to that and didn't realize that some of the lyrics were a bit older. It prompted a discussion about what she is going to hear going into middle school - what we consider appropriate language, etc.

My 11 year old DS is completely different-he is a country boy. Put anything from the CMT top 20 list and he can sing it word for word. He also loves Toby Mac. He'll often come in from playing with the neighbors outside because he can't stand top 40 stuff and that's what is playing in their garage.

Yep, I agree with others that it is hard to know without knowing your kid (and what you consider acceptable--we do not censor anything in music or books). DS11 has mostly the following:
show tunes (Wicked, Legally Blonde, Pippin, Cabaret, West Side Story, Rent, Cats . . .)
Michael Jackson
David Guetta
Lady Gaga
Black Eyed Peas/Fergie
Talking Heads
Beatles
Duran Duran
Variety of single hits from the 80s
Queen
Nickleback
Scorpions (with Berlin philharmonic)
Melissa Etheridge
Kenney Chesney
Shania Twain
Katie Perry
Die Atzen
etc.

He has varied and oddball tastes:upsidedow Let your DS listen to the radio, or watch some videos or hang out with music loving friends and he will figure out what he likes soon enough.:goodvibes

DS10 and his BFF both are Beatle fanatics, so he has all the Beatles songs. They also like a lot of the older classic rock bands - Led Zepplin, Jimmi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.... They want to form a rock band eventually (forget the fact that DS doesn't play an instrument and can't carry a tune) so songs with heavy guitar is always good.

Same here - top 40. My poor DH exposed the kids to The Who, The Beatles, AC/DC, etc., very young, and it broke his little heart when ds12 turned off John Lennon to a top 40's station.

Well, there are so many choices so it's silly to list all the possibilities, but....

I have introduced my son and most of his friends to Cage the Elephant (that's the name of the band.) They sound a little garage-bandy, a little punky, not at all poppy (which is a big no-no for my kids, in particular .)

I'll tell you right now, though, that if you're picky about language, I think their whole first (and only) album contains 3 instances of the "f" word. The music is so great, I just don't care. But you should be able to pick up a clean version, or just download the songs that do not contain it. I think it's in "Back Stabbing Betty" and "In One Ear" (just barely).

I know that when my son was 11 he really liked Weird Al Yankovic and the Beatles. He played them a lot, including other covers of Beatles songs by different bands.

I just asked him for some other suggestions, but apparently now that he's 12 he's stopped listening to anything. Music is too "girly" or something, I have no idea.

My 11 yo daughter loves all of the Glee CDs, a few Black Eyed Peas songs, and Ke$ha's Your Love is My Drug. My younger son loves the Glee songs, the Beatles, and Jimmy Buffett.

I was just using my 11 year old's itouch at the gym. He has Muse, Coldplay, MGMT, Led Zeppelin, La Roux, Radiohead, and more...

We've had a few interesting discussions, too- between Gaga, Ke$ha, and the Blackeyed Peas, there were some things to talk about! We don't censor her music choices, but we do talk about the lyrics if we need to.

Funny- she is a real "prude" about language at school and home. She doesn't curse, and is uncomfortable around kids/adults who do, but she is OK with the occasional word that pops up in songs. She told me once that the singers are expressing themselves, even if it they sometimes use inappropriate words to do so.

My DS11 has very eclectic taste in music, like his parents! He listens to just about anything, from rock and pop, to country and Contemporary Christian.

Lately, most of his downloads have been Top 40 songs. If I have to hear Riding Solo one more time, I think I'll hurl! LOL
