September and October seem to have been particularly bad - and the age group is startling.. There is something very, very different about this particular strain to be causing deaths in the age groups that we're seeing..:sad2:

When you see things like this, it only adds to the confusion of what the "right" decision is in terms of vaccinating or not..

Very worrisome. I try to listen to all the CDC updates online. My dr's office told me to just keep calling, they don't know when they are getting vaccines in. After reading 26% of those hospitalized with H1N1 had asthma, i really want the vaccine.

I shudder when I read articles like this.

I'm a new gramma. My first grandchild was born 3 weeks ago in Rapid City. No flu shots are given to infants under 6 months.

The ped told my DD to keep the baby away from public places for the fall/winter season.

I heard an infant died from H1N1 this week in southwest WI about an hour from where I live.

This is going to be a long winter for sure.

Those who take care of kids under 6 mths are urged to get vaccinated. Hope everyone stays healthy!

One of those deaths was a five year old here in Austin. The family is friends with a one of my school parents. Very sad.

Kids are dying from this flu. I can't imagine how this fact would make the decision whether to vaccinate MORE difficult.

Don't vaccinate = maybe die
Do vaccinate = don't die

Seems pretty simple.

What is taking so long to get the vaccines out? It is my impression that it is now just a matter of shipping them. Is that not true?

We are scheduled and pre-registered to have the girls vaccinated at a clinic next week, but there is no guarantee that the vaccines will even be available then. Argh!

There are still some people struggling with this - for personal reasons.. (See the numerous threads..)

Then there are others - like myself, my DD, and my DGD (11), who are still unprotected because the only thing that is currently available - in very limited supplies in some areas - is the mist - which the 3 of us can't have because it's a "live" virus..

It's difficult to get something that isn't available yet..

Do you have the shots readily available in your area?

Very scary....does anyone know if they are suggesting a certain time period between getting the regular flu shot and the swine flu shot??

A main reason people question vaccinations is because they believe what Jenny mccarthy is spouting. She has no medical or scientific background, yet people believe her over all medical evidence that shows NO relationship between vaccinations and autism.

She obviously has no issues with botox, just vaccinations.

I feel sad for children who would normaly life a happy and healthy life but won't because of careless parents believing a D class actress over valid scientists.

Everything I have read states that if you are having shots - not the mist - you can have them both on the same day, just in different arms..

Flu shots(seasonal or H1N1) can be given together or at any interval. Mists must be given at the exact same time OR 30 days apart. That goes for either flu mist(seasonal or H1N1) or any modified live vaccine (varicella, MMR). Any can be given together, but given apart must have 30 days in between.

I don't think so. DD has to get her 2nd dose of the Flumist in a few weeks. They said if they had the H1N1 available by then she could get that on the same day.

One of the deaths was an 8th grade boy here in Columbus. For anyone who says this virus is no big deal (not directing this at anyone here), there are names and faces to these children. It is just so heartbreaking!

I think this swine flu situation (specifically those who become critically ill or die) is one of those things where people think it won't happen to them - or their loved ones - until it "does" happen to them..

I don't think they are intentionally trying to blow the whole thing off (although I have seen some posts from people who honestly believe this is no different than the regular seasonal flu), but because they may have already had it - or they know someone who did - and they didn't get terribly ill or die, they think it's "no big deal"..

What are they dying of? I'm sorry if that is a dumb question. What I want to know is if it is secondary bacterial infections that could be treated or if there is no treatment for what happens to them.

The availablility of the shots doesn't affect the willingness to get them, only the timing.

You're correct - but there are still people who haven't made that decision yet.. They have their reasons for being hesitant and it's not for me or you to say whether their reasons are valid..

Not a "dumb" question at all.. The article I linked doesn't discuss the specifics of that, but a little girl died yesterday (I believe) in CA who was perfectly healthy - with no underlying medical issues.. It all happened very, very quickly - which is not the first time I have heard of it progressing this way..

All I know for certain is that it attacks the lungs - thus the need for the vents.. Whether the flu then causes a specific bacterial infection in the lungs, I don't really know.. I'm sure someone else here might have a more definitive answer to that..

I haven't stated that thier reasons weren't valid. My point was that the fact that children are dying due to this flu does not make the decision to receive the vaccine more difficult, as you suggested in the OP. It makes it easier.

It is simple math. The perceived odds of being negatively impacted by the vaccine v. the odds of being negatively impacted by not getting the vaccine and weighing the results by the severity of the impact.
