10 year old eating kids meals

DON'T FLAME ME, PLEASE!

We will be on DDP and an adult plan has been purchased for her. However, at some of the restaurants (non-buffet, obviously) she is turning up her nose at the adult choices and would much rather eat chicken nuggets or mac and cheese.

I'll gladly pay OOP for a child's meal for her but is it even allowed? With Disney thinking 10 year olds are 'adults' when most are still eating kid type food, I'm sure I'm not the only one with this dilemna.

Our 10 year old niece was able to order whatever she wanted off the menus with no problem

I've never done DDP, but I've heard of many adults (our teen included) who order off of the children's menu -- particularly if you let them know that you are willing to pay adult prices. Instead of asking "May she order from the children's menu", I'd suggest something like "I'd like an adult Chicken Nugget entree, please."

I can't see where it should be a problem since you have paid for an adult DDP. It would be very different if you had a Child on on the DDP who wanted to order from the regular menu. I'm sure that wouldn't be allowed.

Looking over the menus, most of them say 'for children 9 and under'. I know restaurants around here that will not allow an adult or an obvious older child order off the kids menu and I didn't know if that was the case in WDW.

We just returned from five days in WDW. My friend's 11 year old DD only eats chicken fingers. She ordered from child's menu every day at many TS restaruants. No questions asked by any waiters.

We were not on a dining plan. We were charged for kids meals when kids (over 9) ordered off kids menu.

This is something I've been wondering about too! We'll be on DDP part of our trip, and OOP the rest of our trip. My own DD (who will be 13 at the time of our trip) will likely eat from the adult menu; however, we've just found out that we may be bringing her friend... The friend is both a picky and a light eater, so I was hoping she would be allowed to order from the kid's menu whenever that's the food she'd prefer.

Well if your dd does not like the adult meals then certainly order off the kids menu and pay out of pocket. MOst places let kidsorder off of the kids menu even if they are older (speaking in general and not for WDw) Save the TS credits for a meal she will actually eat as an adult

I myself have been know to order a Happy meal with no kids in sight

I have a ten year old daughter and a son now 12 and here is how its worked for us:

On the DDP when my dd was 10:
She ordered adult food much of the time (she likes steak) and often we asked for sauces etc. to be left off. She was often able to sub sides or get kids appetizers/desserts. They were always happy to work with us to amend her total entree to make it work for her, almost mixing up child's and adult choices. At a couple of places, nothing on the adult menu appealed to her, so we ordered her a kids meal, they brought a larger portion than the standard kid size. We always paid with one adult ts credit. We never saved credits because honestly we were doing good to eat the ones we had, since it was ton of food. One server did ask if we would like to pay OOP for her kids meal and save the credit but we just went ahead and used the credit and that was good since as I recall, she ordered an adult appetizer and dessert to go with her kid meal. We also almost always shared appetizes and desserts after about day two because we realized there was just no way to eat all that food given the fact two of our family of four eaters were kids under the age of 13.

Off the DDP:
If it wasn't a buffet, we have always been able to order a kids meal for her or my son (who is 12 now, this was when he was more like 10) no problem. If its a buffet, we pay adult price. I have not ever snuck in one of my 10 or over kids as a kid for a buffet but I have ordered her plenty of kids meals at the kids price if its an a la carte menu.

I personally think that the kids cutoff of 9 is ridiculous. There are many 10 year olds that like regular adult food, but a precious few who can actally eat an adult sized portion. Most of the restaurants we go to the kids menu is 12 and under.

Just have your child order what she wants, they will charge you appropriately.

Our 11 year old son is also a picky and light eater. On our recent trip, he ordered kids meals most places. The only place we encountered a problem was at WCC where our server wouldn't allow him to order a kids meal. I was kind of confused because we had done it everywhere else during the week. He ordered the adult skillet and ate the ribs, everything else was thrown away. We paid for the adult meal because we had to, Dining Plan, but I just hate the wasting of all of that food when I knew when he ordered it, that he would only eat the ribs.

Our 12 yo daughter was ordering off the kids menu and then the waiters said they could give her an adult size order of the food. We were on the free DDP last year. She would order chicken nuggets and they would give her an adult portion. If they didn't suggest I would ask if she could have adult size and I never had a problem.
