10,000 steps per day?

Well of course a person can walk without the pedometer on and the steps still count. :rotfl: Sometimes I'll forget to wear mine and then be out walking with my DH and I'll say that my walking is a waste since I am not wearing the pedometer.

But what I meant to the other poster that with some pedometers (like the one that Costco has) the pedometer will not register the steps when pedaling a bike. Of course a person can still ride a bike with it on. :teeth:

:rotfl:

I think we're on two different wavelenghts. I meant the exercise counts as movement--I didn't know there were biking pedometers.

Planogirl--I have a treadmill. But when hubby is home, I try not to use it--sometimes its nickname is the "dread"mill.

You would have to be a really moving non-exercising person...or someone who does get in a good 3-5 mile walk or run per day to compensate for the lack of movement the rest of the day.

OK, now the question is how can we walk and still DIS. Someone needs to come up with a treadmill mounted laptop. ;)

Lisa, why do you call it the "dread mill" if I'm not being too nosy? If and when we can ever afford it, I've thought about trying to pick up a used one. I don't know where I'd put it though; they take up a lot of space. What about an exercise bike?

I'm loving my treadmill. I've wanted one for years but had no space. Last summer we built a room under our house (we're built on a hill and had a huge unusable crawl space) that we use for storage/exercise/hobby space. I've been taping an hour long show every night and when I watch it the next morning, fast forwarding through commercials, it takes about 45 minutes. I'm taping shows like LOST, Amazing Race, Survivor, etc. so that I'm dying to know what happened - forcing me to go down and walk. When I don't have a show taped, a friend loaned me some old movies.

:rotfl2: I'll try this again. :teeth: No, there are not biking pedometers (or if there are I don't know about them). As far as couting steps, most walking pedometers register when a person is riding a bike or doing an elliptical (at least most of the pedometers we've owned), but some are so under-sensitive that they only register a hard step on the floor, ground, etc and will not register the pedaling from a bike

But yes, the exercise still counts as far as burning calories even if the step counter does not measure it. ;)

Sometimes don't you wish that you could just call someone on the phone instead of DISing with them? We could have straightened this out much sooner. Of course it wouldn't have been nearly so entertaining. :rotfl:

Because I'm training for a marathon and doing anything over 4 miles is incredibly.....BORING! I love it--just when training..the long days go much more quickly when I am able to run them outdoors. ;) ETA--like when I have to run 90 or more minutes....my long days are already up to nearly 2 hours.

I have a pedomter on everyday(and it calculates correctly). If I am not trying I get 2500 steps on an average day, maybe 5000-6000 on a day where I walk DD to school and run arround doing errands.
I get to 10,000 probably 5 times a week, but I have to work at it.

Same here. I've got a TV/VCR combo and a DVD player in front of the treadmill. I used to watch movies we had on tape or recorded shows. Since we joined Netflix, I've switched to DVD's. I always make one of our 3 selections a treadmill movie for me.

Just for the record--I don't hate my treadmill--I've got the set up and everything....you try staying on it for 2 hours...the time doesn't fly ;). I avoid it for my longer workouts if I can help it.

This is what I do too. Blockbuster, I get TV Shows, Gilmore Girls or One Tree Hill (you'd never guess I'm 36 :flower: ) and 1 hour long show without commercials is just enough time for me to get in 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 miles. Otherwise the treadmill bores me to tears!

I am sure the one I bought last night is not accurate. Other than my 3 1/2 miles, I have only done a load of laundry and ran to a few stores (Ok, not ran, drove, there is NOTHING close enough to walk to here) and it already says 12644 steps! It's only 4 o'clock, so this thing is obviously a crappy one.

Wow! I knew I liked weekends for a reason. I just got off the treadmill and I'm now over 8,000 steps for the day with a couple of hours left to the evening (thought I won't get more than a couple hundred more steps in). See, work just isn't healthy for us. We need to be out and about doing things and moving.

That's good, Steve! On this rainy day I haven't done nearly enough, only 6600 steps so far. I'll probably get to 7500 steps, but that's not too good. I didn't sleep much last night so was sleepy, too, so that sure didn't help my motivation to move around. Tomorrow I will do more.

Now if you are going up and down stairs, do those steps count double or triple?:) We did Parade of Homes here yesterday, and there were loads of steps!;)

I use a pedometer alot - atfirst it was hard getting in the 10,000 steps each day but it can be done. I make sure to walk more everywhere - I park in the farthest spot at the store so that I have to walk further. I also walk my dog more often. Just wearing the pedometer makes me get up a move more so that I will log more steps. I get on the treadmill daily for an hour and try for atleast 3 miles a day on that ( 6000 steps). once you get used to it - it really is pretty easy to get the 10,000 steps in - plus it gets you on great shape for all that walking at WDW :earsgirl:

I don't have a pedometer, but have been thinking about this recently too. I run at the gym 5 days a week for 25-30 minutes, which gets me about 3000-3500 steps (according to their machine). The only other big activity I do other than the gym is we go on a family walk after dinner before my daughter goes to bed everynight. That is usually 30 minutes, though sometimes an hour, so I'd guess maybe another 2000-3500 steps depending on how long and fast we walk that night. So I really doubt that on an average day I walk over 6000-7000 steps, max of 8000 and that would only be on a day where I run a bit more at the gym and walk a longer night walk so not too often. I move around a lot at home with my 1yo, but our condo is very, very tiny, so no way am I getting many steps in there.

OK, I went out and bought a $9 pedometer and it seems to register about 2 steps for every step I take. I think it jiggles on my hip when I step and that does it. I don't think it is going to give me an accurate count. :guilty:
Guess I should have spent $15? :confused3

The new lifestyle ones cost even more than $15, but are worth it. For the one pedometer I've had (I think I broke it once and needed to replace it), my DH has gone through probably 1/2 dozen.

Did you calibrate it to your stride? Check the directions and they should tell you how to do that.

There were no directions. Just a booklet about walking. :confused3
