In less than 24 hours, my secret will be revealed. Surprise, kids, we are going to DisneyWorld!

But first, I have to pack and get everything ready under cover of darkness. Not as easy as you might think with an inquisitive 6 year old who thinks something weird is going on... Thankfully his big sister and usual partner in crime is out of the house tonight at a school retreat, or I'd never be able to pull this off. I'm good, but not that good...

This was the trip that was never meant to be. With stress at work and some health issues in the family, we had decided that a staycation was all we were up for this year. Until my brother and SIL started asking questions about WDW and when to take their sons (ummm, asap...), making me wistful. But that wasn't enough - DH was firm. No trip this year. Sigh.

Then came the email from the "Mickey Mafia" as DH calls my friends at Disney Destinations. An email with a PIN code. Immediately followed by a DING from my friends at Southwest. A PIN and a DING - surely someone was trying to get my attention... Still, DH was resolute.

Then I realized that DD had a short week at school due to the retreat. And there was a YES program for each of the kids, meaning discounted park tickets. Please, DH, a PIN, a DING and some YES. What more do you need?

DH relents. We agree to keep the kids completely in the dark. We decide to forgo the DING and drive since even with the DING, we can still drive more cheaply than we can all fly.

So here is the plan. DD and DH are at her retreat (yes, I am evil. I signed DH up to chaperone a bunch of middle-schoolers, even after he relented). They'll get home tomorrow, picking DS up from school on their way home. I'll be home (yes, I am truly evil. After signing DH up to chaperone, I took an extra half day so I could finish up everything at home for the trip at a more leisurely pace). They won't expect me to be home, but I'll tell them I felt like doing something that evening but hadn't quite decided what yet. I can almost guarantee DS will suggest WDW, as it is what he suggests anytime we talk about what we'd like to do. So this time, we'll say "Great idea let's go!" (if for some reason the pipsqueak doesn't give me an opening, I'll tell everyone to hop in the car and I've got the DVD player set up with a planning disc).

I have had less than three weeks to plan this trip. I have never had less than six months to plan our other trips. We have one ADR, and plan to eat CS for the rest of the trip (trying the out of the way places to avoid burgers and nuggets), unless there are openings at a TS. We have always had at least one ADR a day on previous trips. I don't really have a touring plan for this trip - whereas I usually have everything on a spreadsheet. I think we are going to have a blast anyway!

Here is the general plan:

Leave Tuesday (that's tomorrow!), drive as far as we can, most likely crossing the FL state line on 95 before stopping for the night.

Wednesday - early breakfast, then hit the road for POP! (another first), check in and have lunch, either at the resort, or at AK. Then spend the day at AK (maybe catch the parade, another first). Dinner is up in the air. Either Mara at AKL or CS Pepper Market. Then hang out poolside at POP! or venture over to Epcot for EMH.

Thursday - DHS by rope drop so DS has a shot at Jedi training (he is NUTS for Star Wars), then decide which shows we'd like to see and work those into the plan. Lunch is a toss up as there is really nowhere I like at DHS. We may just graze on the granola and Clif bars I'll bring with us and have a late lunch somewhere else, depending on how our touring goes. Dinner might be at Capt. Cooks before heading over to MK, or at Epcot if we didn't make it over there the night before.

Friday - YES programs for both the kids. DD is doing a physics program on light and sound waves - I'll be with her (taking one for the team - the program brochure indicates it involves my least favorite attraction - Stitch), and DH and DS will go to a program on how things move. We'll all meet back up for our one ADR at LTT. after the program, we'll either head over to Epcot to check out the Food and Wine festival with the hopes of getting there before it becomes packed with locals, or we'll go back to POP! for a change before heading to MNSSHP (haven't decided on whether to add this to the itinerary - we've done it once and it was a blast, just not sure if we want to do it this trip).

Saturday - rope drop at MK just to be able to say we were there for the 40th anniversary. Then, either stay there or head over to Epcot if we didn't get enough/any F&W the day before.

Sunday - breakfast somewhere in the world (at a TS if I can get an ADR or at a resort CS) before we head home and back to reality.

Now the only thing standing between me and four days of magic is a couple of still empty suitcases and half a day at the office. I'm too excited to sleep!

More (LIVE!) TR to come...

Wow! Great surprise! Can't read to hear how it all turns out. Hope you have a blast!:goodvibes

Count me in! I want to hear more about these Yes programs. I so wish we lived close enough to drive. We're in Houston and 14-16 hours is just a tad too long for me....I'm sure the kids would be fine but I'd be figgiting and squirming like crazy. Plus I'm sure with the thought of Disney at the end of the road my lead foot would cause us to lose time with speeding ticket stops!:rotfl: Looking forward to the update!

Drive vs. fly was a tough decision this time, but in the end, gas and a cheap hotel on the road were cheaper than airfare, plus I love having a car onsite!

popcorn:: How'd things go down?

We're all about to find out!

I nearly burst this morning on the way to school. I was flipping stations and landed on Radio Disney. From the back seat, a little voice says "Mommy, do you know what I wish, Mommy? I wish instead of school you were taking me to Disney, Mommy." I played it cool, but now I am betting that I can't get him to say that this afternoon, so we are really going to have to improv this surprise telling!

So after a morning filled with meetings (like I was paying THAT much attention - all I could think about was getting the car packed :rotfl:), I left the office, got gas in the car (and only paid 2.99 a gallon :cool1:) and went to the bank to get cash.

I raced home a little later than planned, but found out DH was still an hour away, and that he had DD's retreat bus in his rear view mirror, but it was becoming a speck on the horizon. I threw clothes in suitcases, grabbed toothbrushes and shampoo and got them into the car. DH called to tell me that I should pack costumes for the kids "just in case" we decide to do MNSSHP. See, he's not as cranky as we think, is he?

So I am sitting in the recliner, sure that I have forgotten something, but refusing to worry about it, waiting for the kids and DH to get home. I have the YES paperwork. I have the ticket confirmation for will-call. I've checked in online, and everyone has enough underwear to see them through the trip - what else do I need to worry about?

Phone charger, phone: check
Hand Gel (read a post last night about the stomach flu at WDW :scared1:): check
Laptop and charger: check
ticket lanyards: check
road snacks: check

I'm good, right?

Any second now, I'll hear the tires crunching on the driveway and my status as the biggest rockstar mom in the history of rockstar moms will be firmly established (at least in my kids eyes). HURRY UP!!! I wanna go to Disney World!

Subscribing! popcorn::

I will be there on Sunday! Until then, I will live vicariously through you!

Love it!!! Can't wait to hear how the big reveal goes. I'm so green with envy. I'd love to be surprising my daughter with a trip to WDW. We returned about a month ago and I'm more than ready to go back. Hope you have a wonderful wonderful time. Looking forward to your updates!

Sounds like fun. I will be following along!

Glad to have you all on board!

As I write this, the pixie dust has already started. DH and the kids got home, and DD was immediately concerned - was I sick? I never take time off, so something must be wrong. I played along - no, I just decided to take off a little early. Maybe we could all do something cool for dinner?

DS chimes in "McDonalds?" (he is a recovering addict - hasn't been to the Golden Arches in months since I've been on a healthier living kick). Um, no, better. He rolls his eyes "Better? like what?" as if I clearly do not understand that when you are six, there is nothing better. DH and I can barely contain our grins.

"Daddy, what do you want to do?" At this point, even I know I am over-acting, but the kids don't seem to get it.

"I don't know, wanna just get in the car and see where it takes us?" What is with these kids? They don't have a clue, and any other time, DS would be begging to go get some magic. But not today.

"DS, pick where you would love to go more than anywhere else."

"Disney World. Only I know you won't take us there."

"How do you know that?"

He sighs, and begins to explain it to me as if I am a bit dense "Because, Mommy, it is really far away and I have homework."

"So? You'll take it with you. Let's go!"

At this point, DD is hopefully suspicious. "Are you kidding?"

Again, DS sighs (clearly he is surrounded by females who need a lot of things explained to them) "Of course she is kidding. We're not just going to Disney because I said so."

"What if I said we are? I left work early to pack the car." DD starts screaming. DS is still saying I'm kidding. I pull out the paperwork and ask him to read it. "Ticket Con...conf...conf...I can't read that word, Mommy" DD completely loses it - "it says confirmation! We are really going! We are really going to Disney World!" DS is still skeptical. but starting to buy in to this. "You're not kidding? Do I have to do my homework first? When are we going?"

So I tell them we are all packed, they just need to pick some movies for the trip, and any stuffed animals they want to take. We are on the road within 30 minutes, but it is almost two hours before they really settle in to the fact that Mommy has not lost it, we really are on our way to Disney!

So to pay for being evil and signing DH up to chaperone a bunch of middle schoolers :rolleyes1 DH gets me to take the first driving shift. I stop long enough to get Chick Fil A for dinner (grilled chicken salad if you were paying attention to the healthier eating I am trying to do), and then keep on going while DH snoozes in the passenger seat.

I get us within a few miles of the FL line when DH wakes up and announces he can get us to Orlando if I think I can get a night added to the front end of our stay. I pull up our confirmation and call POP! directly. I take it as a good sign when the CM at the front desk answers and has the same (slightly) unusual first name as me.

She offers to transfer me to room operations, but wants to be sure I realize that we will incur an additional night's charge :confused3 I hadn't considered anything else, but I guess she's seen people try to check in at 1 am before and not pay for it???

Then Doug in operations takes over, and tells me they have availabilty, and he thinks he can shuffle some things around to keep us in the same room for our entire stay. :thumbsup2 He gets back on the line and says, yes, he can. I tell him I hate to be a pain, but I had requested a ground floor room near the main building for medical reasons - can he keep us in such a room? DD is a stroke survivor, and while she can walk, it can be a bit of a struggle at times. Doug takes a look and says "I don't like where we had assigned you based on that request. I think what I've got now is much better for you." Thank you, Doug!

At this moment (1:29 am), we are 10 miles away from POP! with two fast asleep kids in the backseat who think they are going to wake up to have to go into a random hotel room in Georgia. Can they handle all these surprises?

I gotta say it: this is the best live tr I've read yet, and I'm a tr addict :rolleyes1
Great job so far!

Sounds like a great start to a magical trip.

It is magical! Thanks for shaing in it with me!

Great job so far!

Aww, now I am blushing. And stressing. How am I supposed to live up to such high praise? Glad to have you along for the trip!

Can't wait to hear more, you rockstar Mom, you. Did the kids stay asleep?

DD texted her friends and began with the phrase "y'all are NOT going to believe how awesome my mom is!" Can you frame a text message??? Thanks for joining the trip!

By the time we checked in last night and got settled in the room, it was after 2. The kids went nuts when they woke up and saw a giant Rubik's cube out the car window as we pulled into POP! They found enough energy to explore the lobby as I checked us in. We got a great room in the Seventies - close to the action, but still pretty quiet. We grabbed the electronics and the overnight luggage and crashed into bed.

I was up before the rest of the gang, but took pity on them and let everyone sleep in this morning. DS was the first of my crew to wake up, and he was quick to throw some clothes on and walk to the food court with me. I may not need much sleep, but I do need coffee!

The food court wasn't too crowded since it was already after eight, I'm guessing we were at the tail end of the breakfast rush. DS chose Mickey waffles with sausage and OJ, and I grabbed a side of sausage, a biscuit and a blueberry muffin. Oh, yeah, and a refillable mug that I filled twice with coffee before heading back to the room where DH was stirring (of course that may have had something to do with DS jumping on the bed and loudly telling him he needed to eat breakfast). DD was proving that she had indeed become an official teenager by not even flinching while all this went on. I settled DS down with his waffles and sausage, set up a place for DD with sausage and the muffin. And handed DH a sausage biscuit. The theme for breakfast was eat your sausage - if you are thinking I had a lot of sausage, you'd be right - the CMs put a total of six pieces on my tray when all I ordered was a side of sausage for the kids meal and an extra side to go with DH's biscuit.

Now my monsters were fed, and I had caffeine on board, we were ready to go to AK. Minor delay when the CM at the ticket window didn't know how to handle printing our YES tickets. But we soon got it figured out and she gave us a fast pass for being patient.no problem - we are at the happiest place on earth, no minor computer glitch is going to slow us down!

Once inside, DS takes us all by surprise by announcing he wants to go on Dinosaur. What?!? I have never done it, DD won't do it, and DH picks that moment to find a previously undiscovered enthusiasm for primeval whirl, and insists on taking DD there instead. I try to convince DS that it isn't just a fun little ride with a nice little stegosaurus in it, but he's just read the Magic Treehouse book Dinosaurs Before Dark and is convinced this will be an adventure just like that. The twerp even offers to hold my hand if I get scared!

It did not end well. DS got scared pretty early on, and I was not a fan of being jostled in the dark while loud roars surrounded us. I know I said Stitch was my least favorite ride in the World, but he just got a demotion. I think I'll be perfectly content not to have to ride it again. Ever. And, in case anyone besides me is keeping score, DH and I are now even for the middle school retreat thing!

DS asks for a Mickey bar to help him get over almost being eaten by a carnivore while dodging meteors at the same time, so we go in search of DH, DD and an ice cream cart, although not necessarily in that order.

The rest of the day at AK passes much more smoothly. DD and I go on Everest, which we both love. Then we all make our way to Kali River Rapids. Did I mention that it is much hotter than expected? Disney is claiming 92, but the external thermometer on the car said 104 (granted, it had been in the parking lot a while, but still...). You know that line about you will get wet, you may get soaked? Both the kids got drenched. As for me, let's just say that at least my feet stayed dry, but not much else.

A few more things at AK and we decide that we want to go chill out at the pool. We make a detour to Publix first to pick up some fruit, yogurt and bottled water. This particular Publix is interesting because there are lots of people clearly taking a break from the parks (or else they have unusual taste in headgear) and lots of people who are doing their routine weekly shopping, all mixed together. Back in the car, DD announces that she doesn't like going out of the magic, even for snacks and water, and I have to agree with her.

Hot and tired, we are looking forward to pool time...
