1 night at VB - what not to miss

we'll be at vero beach for our first visit this sunday and want to know if anyone has any particular ideas for what not to miss. we're mostly interested in relaxing and enjoying the resort - the beach, the pool and slide, daily activities.

we have one night to eat dinner there, and we're debating eating at the hotel vs. venturing out...and where to? it seems like the hotel is easier, although some recent reviews make me want to venture out.

the other big thing i was wondering is if they'll let us use the facilities for the rest of the day on monday after our check-out time. we've never had a problem doing this at any of the WDW properties (including DVC properties), but I didn't know if VB worked the same way.

thanks in advance.

You can definitely use the facilities after checkout. But in my opinion you are making a mistake in only spending one night there. Too short a time to get a feel for and appreciate the beauty of the resort. I regularly spend a full week there and hate to leave.

trust me, we would have liked more than one night, but by the time we got around to booking (we are always doing a last-minute thing), there were no 2 or more consecutive nights. we only live 1.5 hours away, so we figured if we leave early on sunday and come home late on monday, we can stretch it out a bit. i'm sure once we visit we'll learn a lesson and plan more in advance for next year...

That being the case....let me know what your interests are dining wise and I'll make a recommendation. Beyond that, look into the turtle walk (fabulous) and enjoy a cocktail (or two) at the Green Cabin room.

We stayed 2 nts last year, then added 1 on! I only liked the menus at the pool bar and upstairs in the Green Room...the pizza was flatbread and really good. Also, there is a place called Captain Hierams (SP?) only about 10 minutes away. They have a cool sand floor restaurant and an attached fancy sit-down place.

The turtle walks are on Wednesday and Thursday, and by lottery only.

If I had only one night at VB, I wouldn't take time away from the resort to eat. Our dinner at Shutters was pretty good. I definitely would NOT go to Captain Hiram's. The setting is pretty cool--very laid back, waterside dining, but the food was mediocre at best. It's the one place we would not go back to.

If I only had one night, I would stay on property and not venture off... While there are a few nice restraurents, boat tours, etc. nearby, you are better off sticking by the resort.

A few things to try...
1) Eat a lunch in the Green Cabin Room out on the balcony... The hamburgers are awesome and you can't beat the view.. :thumbsup2
2) Go to Eb & Flo's and book a massage... It will help you get into a "Vero Beach state of mind" much quicker.. ;-)
3) Have breakfast at Shutters.. They usually have a Goofy & Donald character breakfast on either Saturday or Sunday morning.. (Can't remember which right now...) The food at Shutters is casual, and will work out great that 2nd day...
4) Take time to enjoy the beach... Bring beach towels or a good sized blanket... You can swim in the ocean, but it gets a bit rough every now and then...
5) You will get the activity list for the two days when you check-in... Scope it out and see if anything interests you.. Personally, I love the Wine tasting classes when they have them... If you have little ones, VB is one of the only few DVC resorts to still offer 2DC... My kids love that...
6) And last but not least... Hang out by the pool and SWIM.. SWIM... SWIM... Even if you don't like water slides, you may want to go up there at least one time... The view from the top of the slide is one of the best at the resorts, IMO...

thanks for all the great advice. i think we'll just eat at the resort for dinner on sunday, and if we manage to stay late enough on monday, we'll just pick up some pizza across the street. not sure if we'll do a breakfast at shutters - we usually eat a quick breakfast in the room so we can start enjoying the day early.

par8hed, in terms of dining, we were looking for something relatively casual anyhow, with a varied assortment of food. but we always like something a little special and different from something we could cook at home. we also have 2 kids, 3 and 6. our most favorite restaurant at WDW is boma, if that gives you any reference.

one other question: do you know if you can use disney dollars at the resort? it's probably easier to find out if i just call the resort directly, but i figured i'd ask here as long as i was online.

can't wait for tomorrow! thanks for the advice.

Campfire for Sunday night if it falls on that evening and Turtle troop the next morning.... again if they have it.

Enjoy VB.... I can't wait .... 20 Days until WDW and 27 Until VB... but who's counting! :lmao:

The counter service by thge pool is actually pretty good if you want to grab lunch there before you depart on Monday!
